Low-Energy Universality in Atomic and Nuclear Physics
An effective field theory developed for systems interacting through
short-range interactions can be applied to systems of cold atoms with a large
scattering length and to nucleons at low energies. It is therefore the ideal
tool to analyze the universal properties associated with the Efimov effect in
three- and four-body systems. In this "progress report", we will discuss recent
results obtained within this framework and report on progress regarding the
inclusion of higher order corrections associated with the finite range of the
underlying interaction.Comment: Commissioned article for Few-Body Systems, 47 pp, 16 fig
Searching for Radio Pulsars in 3EG Sources at Urumqi Observatory
Since mid-2005, a pulsar searching system has been operating at 18 cm on the
25-m radio telescope of Urumqi Observatory. Test observations on known pulsars
show that the system can perform the intended task. The prospect of using this
system to observe 3EG sources and other target searching tasks is discussed.Comment: a training project about MSc thesi
Relativistic Structure of the Deuteron: 1.Electro-disintegration and y-scaling
Realistic solutions of the spinor-spinor Bethe-Salpeter equation for the
deuteron with realistic interaction kernel including the exchange of pi, sigma,
omega, rho, eta and delta mesons, are used to systematically investigate
relativistic effects in inclusive quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering
within the relativistic impulse approximation. Relativistic y-scaling is
considered by generalising the non relativistic scaling function to the
relativistic case, and it is shown that y-scaling does occur in the usual
relativistic scaling variable resulting from the energy conservation in the
instant form of dynamics. The present approach of y-scaling is fully covariant,
with the deuteron being described by eight components, viz. the 3S_1^{++},
3S_1^{--}, 3D_1^{++}, 3D_1^{--}, 3P_1^{+-}, 3P_1^{-+}, 1P_1^{+-}, 1P_1^{-+}
waves. It is demonstrated that if the negative relative energy states 1P_1,
3P_1 are disregarded, the concept of covariant momentum distributions N(p_0,p),
with p_0=M_D/2-\sqrt{p^2+m^2}, can be introduced, and that calculations of
lectro-disintegration cross section in terms of these distributions agree
within few percents with the exact calculations which include the 1P_1, 3P_1
states, provided the nucleon three momentum |p|\<= 1 GeV/c; in this momentum
range, the asymptotic relativistic scaling function is shown to coincide with
the longitudinal covariant momentum distribution.Comment: 32 LaTeX pages, 18 eps-figures. Final version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Binary decay of Ni56 formed in the 32S+24Mg reaction
Fully energy-damped yields from the Mg32 reaction have been measured at center-of-mass energies of Ec.m.=51.6 and 60.5 MeV with the use of an experimental arrangement where both of the resulting heavy fragments could be detected in coincidence. Energy, velocity, and angular distributions of the reaction fragments have been determined. The cross sections prior to secondary light-particle emission have been deduced for the breakup of the compound system into different mass channels. These data are discussed in terms of two possible reaction mechanisms: fusion followed by fission and deep-inelastic orbiting
Real-space local polynomial basis for solid-state electronic-structure calculations: A finite-element approach
We present an approach to solid-state electronic-structure calculations based
on the finite-element method. In this method, the basis functions are strictly
local, piecewise polynomials. Because the basis is composed of polynomials, the
method is completely general and its convergence can be controlled
systematically. Because the basis functions are strictly local in real space,
the method allows for variable resolution in real space; produces sparse,
structured matrices, enabling the effective use of iterative solution methods;
and is well suited to parallel implementation. The method thus combines the
significant advantages of both real-space-grid and basis-oriented approaches
and so promises to be particularly well suited for large, accurate ab initio
calculations. We develop the theory of our approach in detail, discuss
advantages and disadvantages, and report initial results, including the first
fully three-dimensional electronic band structures calculated by the method.Comment: replacement: single spaced, included figures, added journal referenc
Measurement of the cosmic microwave background polarization lensing power spectrum from two years of POLARBEAR data
We present a measurement of the gravitational lensing deflection power spectrum reconstructed with two seasons of cosmic microwave background polarization data from the POLARBEAR experiment. Observations were taken at 150 GHz from 2012 to 2014 and surveyed three patches of sky totaling 30 square degrees. We test the consistency of the lensing spectrum with a cold dark matter cosmology and reject the no-lensing hypothesis at a confidence of 10.9σ, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We observe a value of AL = 1.33 ± 0.32 (statistical) ±0.02 (systematic) ±0.07 (foreground) using all polarization lensing estimators, which corresponds to a 24% accurate measurement of the lensing amplitude. Compared to the analysis of the first- year data, we have improved the breadth of both the suite of null tests and the error terms included in the estimation of systematic contamination
The rate of colonization by macro-invertebrates on artificial substrate samplers
The influence of exposure time upon macro-invertebrate colonization on modified Hester-Dendy substrate samplers was investigated over a 60-day period. The duration of exposure affected the number of individuals, taxa and community diversity. The numbers of individuals colonizing the samplers reached a maximum after 39 days and then began to decrease, due to the emergence of adult insects. Coefficients of variation for the four replicate samples retrieved each sampling day fluctuated extensively throughout the study. No tendencies toward increasing or decreasing coefficients of variation were noted with increasing time of sampler exposure. The number of taxa colonizing the samplers increased throughout the study period. The community diversity index was calculated for each sampling day and this function tended to increase throughout the same period. This supports the hypothesis that an exposure period of 6 weeks, as recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, may not always provide adequate opportunity for a truly representative community of macro-invertebrates to colonize multiplate samplers. Many of the taxa were collected in quite substantial proportions after periods of absence or extreme sparseness. This is attributed to the growth of periphyton and the collection of other materials that created food and new habitats suitable for the colonization of new taxa. Investigation of the relationship between ‘equitability’ and length of exposure revealed that equitability did not vary like diversity with increased time of exposure.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72073/1/j.1365-2427.1979.tb01522.x.pd
Fusion of O16 + Ca40 at Elab(16O)=13.4 MeV/nucleon
Mass and velocity distributions have been measured for the evaporation residue and fusion-fission products from the O16+40Ca reaction at 214 MeV. Comparisons of Monte Carlo statistical evaporation simulations to the observed angle and mass dependences of the evaporation-residue velocity distributions were used to set limits on the maximum complete-fusion cross section and to extract information about the magnitude and character of incomplete-fusion processes. The extracted value of the complete fusion evaporation-residue cross section is discussed in the framework of previous results and existing models
