Folie a Famille Associated with Amphetamine Use
Shared Psychotic Disorder involving an entire family (folie a famille) is extremely rare. Only two cases of Shared Psychotic Disorder linked to stimulant abuse have been documented in the literature. We report a case of folie a famille that involved 5 members of a family, and was associated with amphetamine use in the primary individual. Our case shares many clinical and etilogical factors with previously reported cases of shared psychotic disorders. A wide variety of psychotic manifestations are associated with amphetamine use and clinicians should be aware of this uncommon syndrome among stimulant-using population, particularly due to the recent increase in methamphetamine use and the link between delusional disorders and violence among these individuals
Coisotropic deformations of associative algebras and dispersionless integrable hierarchies
The paper is an inquiry of the algebraic foundations of the theory of
dispersionless integrable hierarchies, like the dispersionless KP and modified
KP hierarchies and the universal Whitham's hierarchy of genus zero. It stands
out for the idea of interpreting these hierarchies as equations of coisotropic
deformations for the structure constants of certain associative algebras. It
discusses the link between the structure constants and the Hirota's tau
function, and shows that the dispersionless Hirota's bilinear equations are,
within this approach, a way of writing the associativity conditions for the
structure constants in terms of the tau function. It also suggests a simple
interpretation of the algebro-geometric construction of the universal Whitham's
equations of genus zero due to Krichever.Comment: minor misprints correcte
Universal Drinfeld-Sokolov Reduction and Matrices of Complex Size
We construct affinization of the algebra of ``complex size''
matrices, that contains the algebras for integral values of the
parameter. The Drinfeld--Sokolov Hamiltonian reduction of the algebra
results in the quadratic Gelfand--Dickey structure on the
Poisson--Lie group of all pseudodifferential operators of fractional order.
This construction is extended to the simultaneous deformation of orthogonal and
simplectic algebras that produces self-adjoint operators, and it has a
counterpart for the Toda lattices with fractional number of particles.Comment: 29 pages, no figure
Two-Loop Corrections to the Fermionic Decay Rates of the Standard-Model Higgs Boson
Low- and intermediate mass Higgs bosons decay preferably into fermion pairs.
The one-loop electroweak corrections to the respective decay rates are
dominated by a flavour-independent term of . We calculate
the two-loop gluon correction to this term. It turns out that this correction
screens the leading high- behaviour of the one-loop result by roughly
10\%. We also present the two-loop QCD correction to the contribution induced
by a pair of fourth-generation quarks with arbitrary masses. As expected, the
inclusion of the QCD correction considerably reduces the renormalization-scheme
dependence of the prediction.Comment: 14 pages, latex, figures 2-5 appended, DESY 94-08
Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Photonic Lattices: Theory and Experiment
We examine an example of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a double-well
waveguide with a symmetric potential. The ground state of the system beyond a
critical power becomes asymmetric. The effect is illustrated numerically, and
quantitatively analyzed via a Galerkin truncation that clearly shows the
bifurcation from a symmetric to an asymmetric steady state. This phenomenon is
also demonstrated experimentally when a probe beam is launched appropriately
into an optically induced photonic lattice in a photorefractive material.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Vibrational signature of broken chemical order in a GeS2 glass: a molecular dynamics simulation
Using density functional molecular dynamics simulations, we analyze the
broken chemical order in a GeS glass and its impact on the dynamical
properties of the glass through the in-depth study of the vibrational
eigenvectors. We find homopolar bonds and the frequencies of the corresponding
modes are in agreement with experimental data. Localized S-S modes and 3-fold
coordinated sulfur atoms are found to be at the origin of specific Raman peaks
whose origin was not previously clear. Through the ring size statistics we
find, during the glass formation, a conversion of 3-membered rings into larger
units but also into 2-membered rings whose vibrational signature is in
agreement with experiments.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.
Scaling laws for the 2d 8-state Potts model with Fixed Boundary Conditions
We study the effects of frozen boundaries in a Monte Carlo simulation near a
first order phase transition. Recent theoretical analysis of the dynamics of
first order phase transitions has enabled to state the scaling laws governing
the critical regime of the transition. We check these new scaling laws
performing a Monte Carlo simulation of the 2d, 8-state spin Potts model. In
particular, our results support a pseudo-critical beta finite-size scaling of
the form beta(infinity) + a/L + b/L^2, instead of beta(infinity) + c/L^d +
d/L^{2d}. Moreover, our value for the latent heat is 0.294(11), which does not
coincide with the latent heat analytically derived for the same model if
periodic boundary conditions are assumed, which is 0.486358...Comment: 10 pages, 3 postscript figure
Multistable Solitons in Higher-Dimensional Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schroedinger Lattices
We study the existence, stability, and mobility of fundamental discrete
solitons in two- and three-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger lattices with a
combination of cubic self-focusing and quintic self-defocusing onsite
nonlinearities. Several species of stationary solutions are constructed, and
bifurcations linking their families are investigated using parameter
continuation starting from the anti-continuum limit, and also with the help of
a variational approximation. In particular, a species of hybrid solitons,
intermediate between the site- and bond-centered types of the localized states
(with no counterpart in the 1D model), is analyzed in 2D and 3D lattices. We
also discuss the mobility of multi-dimensional discrete solitons that can be
set in motion by lending them kinetic energy exceeding the appropriately
crafted Peierls-Nabarro barrier; however, they eventually come to a halt, due
to radiation loss.Comment: 12 pages, 17 figure
NN Core Interactions and Differential Cross Sections from One Gluon Exchange
We derive nonstrange baryon-baryon scattering amplitudes in the
nonrelativistic quark model using the ``quark Born diagram" formalism. This
approach describes the scattering as a single interaction, here the
one-gluon-exchange (OGE) spin-spin term followed by constituent interchange,
with external nonrelativistic baryon wavefunctions attached to the scattering
diagrams to incorporate higher-twist wavefunction effects. The short-range
repulsive core in the NN interaction has previously been attributed to this
spin-spin interaction in the literature; we find that these perturbative
constituent-interchange diagrams do indeed predict repulsive interactions in
all I,S channels of the nucleon-nucleon system, and we compare our results for
the equivalent short-range potentials to the core potentials found by other
authors using nonperturbative methods. We also apply our perturbative
techniques to the N and systems: Some
channels are found to have attractive core potentials and may accommodate
``molecular" bound states near threshold. Finally we use our Born formalism to
calculate the NN differential cross section, which we compare with experimental
results for unpolarised proton-proton elastic scattering. We find that several
familiar features of the experimental differential cross section are reproduced
by our Born-order result.Comment: 27 pages, figures available from the authors, revtex, CEBAF-TH-93-04,

Differential cross section and recoil polarization measurements for the gamma p to K+ Lambda reaction using CLAS at Jefferson Lab
We present measurements of the differential cross section and Lambda recoil
polarization for the gamma p to K+ Lambda reaction made using the CLAS detector
at Jefferson Lab. These measurements cover the center-of-mass energy range from
1.62 to 2.84 GeV and a wide range of center-of-mass K+ production angles.
Independent analyses were performed using the K+ p pi- and K+ p (missing pi -)
final-state topologies; results from these analyses were found to exhibit good
agreement. These differential cross section measurements show excellent
agreement with previous CLAS and LEPS results and offer increased precision and
a 300 MeV increase in energy coverage. The recoil polarization data agree well
with previous results and offer a large increase in precision and a 500 MeV
extension in energy range. The increased center-of-mass energy range that these
data represent will allow for independent study of non-resonant K+ Lambda
photoproduction mechanisms at all production angles.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figure
