The Sorption Behavior of Cs+ ion On Clay Minerals and Zeolite in Radioactive Waste Managemen: Sorption Kinetics and Themodynamics
Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this work, Cs+ ion sorption on some clays and zeolite were investigated. Cs-137 was used as a tracer. Activities were measured with a NaI crystal gamma counter. The particle size distribution was determined by a laser sizer. Surface area of the particles were determined by BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method). Structure analysis was made by using X-ray diffraction. The chemical compositions of the solid samples were determined using a ICAP-OE spectrometer. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were determined. Due to very high uptake results; clay and zeolite can be proposed as a good sorbents in waste management considerations
Visibility of dichalcogenide nanolayers
Dichalcogenides with the common formula MX2 are layered materials with
electrical properties that range from semiconducting to superconducting. Here,
we describe optimal imaging conditions for optical detection of ultrathin,
two-dimensional dichalcogenide nanocrystals containing single, double and
triple layers of MoS2, WSe2 and NbSe2. A simple optical model is used to
calculate the contrast for nanolayers deposited on wafers with varying
thickness of SiO2. The model is extended for imaging using the green channel of
a video camera. Using AFM and optical imaging we confirm that single layers of
MoS2, WSe2 and NbSe2 can be detected on 90nm and 270 nm SiO2 using optical
means. By measuring contrast under broad-band green illumination we are also
able to distinguish between nanostructures containing single, mono and triple
layers of MoS2, WSe2 and NbSe2
Carbon nanotubes adhesion and nanomechanical behavior from peeling force spectroscopy
Applications based on Single Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWNT) are good example
of the great need to continuously develop metrology methods in the field of
nanotechnology. Contact and interface properties are key parameters that
determine the efficiency of SWNT functionalized nanomaterials and nanodevices.
In this work we have taken advantage of a good control of the SWNT growth
processes at an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip apex and the use of a low
noise (1E-13 m/rtHz) AFM to investigate the mechanical behavior of a SWNT
touching a surface. By simultaneously recording static and dynamic properties
of SWNT, we show that the contact corresponds to a peeling geometry, and
extract quantities such as adhesion energy per unit length, curvature and
bending rigidity of the nanotube. A complete picture of the local shape of the
SWNT and its mechanical behavior is provided
Carbon gas flux from the Dealul Melcului geological reserve (Corund, Romania)
Recent studies have revealed the qualitative and quantitative importance of the free gas emanations from aqueous environments and from soil surfaces in Romania. Interesting mixing zones of different gases can be observed on the boundary between the Miocene sedimentary deposits and Late Miocene volcaniclastics. This study presents the results of investigations of free carbondioxide and methane made in Corund area (Harghita County), at Dealul Melcului geological reserve, where a presumed methane seepage was described in the past. Measurements were performed using a closed chamber method. Our observations and result show the lack of methane emanations, while the maximum value for carbon-dioxide emanation was 458 g/m2/day
Bundling up carbon nanotubes through Wigner defects
We show, using ab initio total energy density functional theory, that the
so-called Wigner defects, an interstitial carbon atom right besides a vacancy,
which are present in irradiated graphite can also exist in bundles of carbon
nanotubes. Due to the geometrical structure of a nanotube, however, this defect
has a rather low formation energy, lower than the vacancy itself, suggesting
that it may be one of the most important defects that are created after
electron or ion irradiation. Moreover, they form a strong link between the
nanotubes in bundles, increasing their shear modulus by a sizeable amount,
clearly indicating its importance for the mechanical properties of nanotube
bundles.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure
Capacitive Spring Softening in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanoelectromechanical Resonators
We report the capacitive spring softening effect observed in single-walled
carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanoelectromechanical (NEM) resonators. The nanotube
resonators adopt dual-gate configuration with both bottom-gate and side-gate
capable of tuning the resonance frequency through capacitive coupling.
Interestingly, downward resonance frequency shifting is observed with
increasing side-gate voltage, which can be attributed to the capacitive
softening of spring constant. Furthermore, in-plane vibrational modes exhibit
much stronger spring softening effect than out-of-plan modes. Our dual-gate
design should enable the differentiation between these two types of vibrational
modes, and open up new possibility for nonlinear operation of nanotube
resonators.Comment: 12 pages/ 3 figure
Systematic investigation of the elastic proton-deuteron differential cross section at intermediate energies
To investigate the importance of three-nucleon forces (3NF) systematically
over a broad range of intermediate energies, the differential cross sections of
elastic proton-deuteron scattering have been measured at proton bombarding
energies of 108, 120, 135, 150, 170 and 190 MeV at center-of-mass angles
between and . Comparisons with Faddeev calculations show
unambiguously the shortcomings of calculations employing only two-body forces
and the necessity of including 3NF. They also show the limitations of the
latest few-nucleon calculations at backward angles, especially at higher beam
energies. Some of these discrepancies could be partially due to relativistic
effects. Data at lowest energy are also compared with a recent calculation
based on \chipt
Direct measurement of the Wigner function by photon counting
We report a direct measurement of the Wigner function characterizing the
quantum state of a light mode. The experimental scheme is based on the
representation of the Wigner function as an expectation value of a displaced
photon number parity operator. This allowed us to scan the phase space
point-by-point, and obtain the complete Wigner function without using any
numerical reconstruction algorithms.Comment: 4 pages, REVTe
