Research-related activities in teachers' daily work

    Get PDF
The focus of this article is on the research-related activities that primary school teachers conduct in their daily work. Furthermore, the school support for these activities is examined. The research-related activities were operationalized on basis of Van Strien's research cycle and characteristics of systematic reflection. Data has been collected with a survey (n = 220) and a comparative case study in two schools. The results show that teachers in their perceptions conduct many research-related activities, though strong differences were found between schools. The case study of the two schools shows an explicit and collectively conducted school policy with a focus on evidence-informed decision-making to be positive for teachers' research-related activities.</p

The reliability of the patellotrochlear index on magnetic resonance imaging for measuring patellofemoral height

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the inter-and intra-observer reliability of the patellotrochlear index (PTI) on magnetic resonance images (MRI) in patients with patellofemoral pain. The correlation between the PTI measured on MRI and the modified Insall-Salvati (MIS) ratio measured on radiographs was also assessed. Methods: The PTI was assessed on MRI images and the MIS ratio on radiographs of 66 knees of 62 patients. Assessment was performed by two orthopaedic surgeons, one orthopaedic surgery registrar, two radiologists and one radiology registrar. Correlation coefficients, standard errors of measurement and limits of agreement were calculated for the PTI. To assess the association between the PTI and the MIS ratio, the Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated. Results: The PTI showed good interobserver reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.73-0.85) and excellent intra-observer reliability (ICC 0.90; 95% CI 0.89-0.91). The standard error of measurement was 0.05 and limits of agreement with the mean +/- 0.09. A very weak and not significant correlation was found between the PTI and the MIS (r = 0.02; P = 0.77). Conclusions: The PTI showed good interobserver reliability and excellent intra-observer reliability. In order to conclude which measurement method of assessing patellar height is truly the most reliable, future studies should investigate agreement parameters (standard error of measurement, limits of agreement) besides solely correlation coefficients. We found a very weak correlation between the PTI and the MIS which suggests that at least one index has poor validity. Future validity studies on indices to assess patellar height are necessary. Carriage of an ACME II variant may have contributed to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus sequence type 239-like strain replacement in Liverpool hospital, Sydney, Australia

Approximately 39% of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type 239 (ST239)-like bloodstream isolates from Liverpool Hospital (obtained between 1997 and 2008) carry an arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME). Whole-genome sequencing revealed that an ACME II variant is located between orfX and SCCmec III, and based on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and temporal relationships of all ST239-like isolates (n = 360), ACME carriage may have contributed to subpulsotype strain replacement

Estimating seasonal abundance of a central place forager using counts and telemetry data

R.J.S. was supported by a Natural Environment Research Council studentship.Obtaining population estimates of species that are not easily observed directly can be problematic. However, central place foragers can often be observed some of the time, e.g. when seals are hauled out. In these instances, population estimates can be derived from counts, combined with information on the proportion of time that animals can be observed. We present a modelling framework to estimate seasonal absolute abundance using counts and information from satellite telemetry data. The method was tested on a harbour seal population in an area of southeast Scotland. Counts were made monthly, between November 2001 and June 2003, when seals were hauled out on land and were corrected for the proportion of time the seals were at sea using satellite telemetry. Harbour seals (n=25) were tagged with satellite relay data loggers between November 2001 and March 2003. To estimate the proportion of time spent hauled out, time at sea on foraging trips was modelled separately from haul-out behaviour close to haul-out sites because of the different factors affecting these processes. A generalised linear mixed model framework was developed to capture the longitudinal nature of the data and the repeated measures across individuals. Despite seasonal variability in the number of seals counted at haul-out sites, the model generated estimates of abundance, with an overall mean of 846 (95% CI: 767 to 979). The methodology shows the value of using count and telemetry data collected concurrently for estimating absolute abundance, information that is essential to assess interactions between predators, fish stocks and fisheries.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Chemogenic formations are composed by Mg- and Sr-calcite, aragonite, gypsum and hydromagnesite, celestite, strontianite, dolomite, goethite, rutile and zircon. Clastic sediments are composed mainly by dolomite, quartz and calcite. Same secondary minerals are observed in those parts of the cave system that have similar morphology and microclimate
