Reflectance spectroscopy of palagonite and iron-rich montmorillonite clay mixtures: Implications for the surface composition of Mars
Because of the power of remote sensing reflectance spectroscopy in determining mineralogy, it was used as the major method of identifying possible mineral analogs of the Martian surface. A summary of proposed Martian surface compositions from reflectance spectroscopy before 1979 was presented. Since that time, iron-rich montmorillonite clay, nanocrystalline or nanophase hematite, and palagonite were suggested as Mars soil analog materials
The Cultural Work of Teacher Education
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Theory Into Practice on July 11, 2017, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/00405841.2017.1336033.Engaging teacher education as cultural work positions teacher educators and pre-service teachers as cultural workers. Cultural workers foreground the cultural complexities of their situated experiences while aiming to produce cultures that transform prevailing inequalities and injustices in public education. Doctoral students are also cultural workers translating the world of academia and their role in it as they learn to educate teacher candidates. How doctoral candidates engage in this cultural work depends greatly on the degree to which their faculty mentors are able to reveal the contradictions and opportunities for expansive learning that co-exist within schools of education and individual departments such as curriculum and learning. This article looks at this conundrum from the perspectives of a doctoral student and a senior faculty member

Tingkat Pengetahuan Dokter Umum Mengenai Leptospirosis Dan Faktor-faktor Yang Mempengaruhinya
Dynamic fibrils in H-alpha and C IV
Aim: To study the interaction of the solar chromosphere with the transition
region, in particular active-region jets in the transition region and their
relation to chromospheric fibrils. Methods: We carefully align image sequences
taken simultaneously in C IV with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer
and in H-alpha with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. We examine the temporal
evolution of "dynamic fibrils", i.e., individual short-lived active-region
chromospheric jet-like features in H-alpha. Results: All dynamic fibrils appear
as absorption features in H-alpha that progress from the blue to the red wing
through the line, and often show recurrent behavior. Some of them, but not all,
appear also as bright features in C IV which develop at or just beyond the apex
of the H-alpha darkening. They tend to best resemble the H-alpha fibril at +700
mA half a minute earlier. Conclusions: Dynamic chromospheric fibrils observed
in H-alpha regularly correspond to transition-region jets observed in the
ultraviolet. This correspondence suggests that some plasma associated with
dynamic fibrils is heated to transition-region temperatures.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
“A Great Opportunity”: Persistence and Performance of Hoosier Link Students
Nationally, students who begin at two-year institutions who desire a bachelor’s degree struggle with the realization of their goal. Indiana is striving to make higher education more accessible, seamless, and cost effective. The partnership transfer program between Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) and Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington called Hoosier Link is a unique program that began in 2006 to enhance transfer student success through co-enrollment of a select group of students. This research study determined whether or not the Hoosier Link program had a positive impact on transfer student persistence and performance. Results found that while dependent variables did not show significance for persistence and performance, there was a correlation between students’ pre-transfer GPA and post-transfer GPA. Additionally, an astounding 72% of the Hoosier Link students saw their first term post-transfer GPA dip. This is classified as “transfer shock” (Hills, 1965, p. 1). These students did recover from their shock and actually one of the Hoosier Link cohorts persisted better than other IUB transfer students. Astin’s (1993) I-E-O theory was utilized in this study. The environmental aspect of this theory proved critical to Hoosier Link student success. Recommendations include: Hoosier Link peer and faculty mentors, living/learning residential community, and positive promotion of the program. Further study opportunities include: academic major evaluation, graduation longitudinal study, qualitative study of Hoosier Link students, other Hoosier Link cohorts, and a review of non-IUB transfer students from the Hoosier Link program.Lori B. Measuring the Sustainability of a Proposed Copper Mine in Arizona : A Temporal Comparison
A proposed copper mine in Arizona has the potential to be the largest copper producing mine in North America. It is expected to produce over a billion pounds of copper per year, and individually produce more than half of the United State's demand for copper. The operation claims to be more sustainable than previous operations by being more efficient with their use of water, energy and material resources. An embodied energy, or EMERGY analysis, was used to evaluate the sustainability of the proposed copper mining operation. The post-mining externalized annual energy cost of copper waste management for previous operations had an EMERGY value of 1.50E+22 solar emjoules per year (sej/yr); the proposed mine plans to internalize the cost of waste management during operation by containing and reusing waste, resulting in an estimated annual EMERGY cost of 6.00E+18 sej/yr. These results indicate that the proposed method of waste management will potentially be more sustainable than past mining operations in terms of embodied energy cost savings. A 1992 copper mine required 7.35E+23 sej/yr for annual energy resource investment; the proposed mine is estimated to require 5.85E+20 sej/yr. These results indicated that the proposed mine will use energy resources more efficiently than old copper mining operations. However, these results do not account for the impacts of subsidence on water and land resources, nor do they account for other potential impacts of deep mining extraction that may occur as a result of the proposed mining operation. Further analysis will be necessary to evaluate these impacts
