    Sexual rights, mental disorder and intellectual disability: practical implications for policy makers and practitioners

    Clear policies regarding sexual expression, sexual behaviour and related decision-making assist in ensuring that the rights of people with mental disorder or intellectual disability are upheld, and that staff know how to react to situations consistently and lawfully without interfering on the basis of their own moral judgements or personal beliefs. Sensitive and holistic planning of care that complies with domestic law, international human rights law and statutory guidance is necessary to complement such policies. Non-intimate physical contact, masturbation, sexual relationships, contraception, sterilisation and vasectomy, pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, sexual dysfunction, parenthood, marriage and civil partnership, divorce, prostitution, pornography, and sex aids and toys are all matters that may properly be part of care planning

    Abstract L-band EPR measurements were done in vitro on extracted human teeth with the objective to evaluate the feasibility of retrospective in vivo EPR dosimetry. In a recent study, the relative contributions of individual tooth components (enamel, crown dentin and root) to the total response of a whole tooth inside an L-band surface coil resonator was investigated. In the present work, the gamma-dose response curves were evaluated for di erent EPR signal evaluation methods, using 35 whole teeth with absorbed doses in the range 1-100 Gy. The paper reports on the ÿrst attempt to deconvolute the single composite L-band EPR line in components due to CO − 2 and native radicals. The L-band EPR spectrum of teeth could be approximated by combining powder-simulated spectra of orthorhombic and quasi-axial signals of the CO − 2 radical and an isotropic signal of the native radicals. Among the applied EPR signal evaluation methods, the evaluation by spectrum deconvolution revealed the lowest detection limit for absorbed dose. A detection limit of about 0:5 Gy was estimated for the currently available L-band equipment

    The impact of particulate electron paramagnetic resonance oxygen sensors on fluorodeoxyglucose imaging characteristics detected via positron emission tomography

    During a first-in-humans clinical trial investigating electron paramagnetic resonance tumor oximetry, a patient injected with the particulate oxygen sensor Printex ink was found to have unexpected fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in a dermal nodule via positron emission tomography (PET). This nodule co-localized with the Printex ink injection; biopsy of the area, due to concern for malignancy, revealed findings consistent with ink and an associated inflammatory reaction. Investigations were subsequently performed to assess the impact of oxygen sensors on FDG-PET/CT imaging. A retrospective analysis of three clinical tumor oximetry trials involving two oxygen sensors (charcoal particulates and LiNc-BuO microcrystals) in 22 patients was performed to evaluate FDG imaging characteristics. The impact of clinically used oxygen sensors (carbon black, charcoal particulates, LiNc-BuO microcrystals) on FDG-PET/CT imaging after implantation in rat muscle (n = 12) was investigated. The retrospective review revealed no other patients with FDG avidity associated with particulate sensors. The preclinical investigation found no injected oxygen sensor whose mean standard uptake values differed significantly from sham injections. The risk of a false-positive FDG-PET/CT scan due to oxygen sensors appears low. However, in the right clinical context the potential exists that an associated inflammatory reaction may confound interpretation

    Antibody-functionalized polymer-coated gold nanoparticles targeting cancer cells: an in vitro and in vivo study

    Gold nanoparticles ( 3c5 nm) coated with plasma-polymerized allylamine were produced through plasma vapor deposition and bioconjugated with a monoclonal antibody targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor. The resulting nanoconjugates displayed an antibody loading of about 1.7 nmol mg -1 and efficiently target epidermal growth factor receptor overexpressing cell lines, as ascertained by ELISA and Western blot assays. The in vitro targeting properties were also confirmed in vivo, where a similar biodistribution profile of what was experienced for the unconjugated antibody was observed. Thanks to the possibility of doping the gold nanoparticles with radionuclides during plasma vapor deposition, the proposed functionalization strategy represents a very suitable platform for the in vivo cancer targeting with nanosized multifunctional particles.
