    Normal families of functions and groups of pseudoconformal diffeomorphisms of quaternion and octonion variables

    This paper is devoted to the specific class of pseudoconformal mappings of quaternion and octonion variables. Normal families of functions are defined and investigated. Four criteria of a family being normal are proven. Then groups of pseudoconformal diffeomorphisms of quaternion and octonion manifolds are investigated. It is proven, that they are finite dimensional Lie groups for compact manifolds. Their examples are given. Many charactersitic features are found in comparison with commutative geometry over R\bf R or C\bf C.Comment: 55 pages, 53 reference

    Quantum equivalence of sigma models related by non Abelian Duality Transformations

    Coupling constant renormalization is investigated in 2 dimensional sigma models related by non Abelian duality transformations. In this respect it is shown that in the one loop order of perturbation theory the duals of a one parameter family of models, interpolating between the SU(2) principal model and the O(3) sigma model, exhibit the same behaviour as the original models.     Embolic stroke complicating Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis circumstantially linked to rectal trauma from foreign body: a first case report

    BACKGROUND: Diagnostic and therapeutic instrumentation of the lower gastrointestinal tract has been reported to result in bacteremia and endocarditis. No such case has been reported in persons with a history of rectal foreign body insertion despite its potential for greater trauma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male was admitted with confusion and inability to speak. His past history was notable for hospitalization to extract a retained plastic soda bottle from the rectosigmoid two years prior. On examination, he was febrile, tachycardic and hypotensive. There was an apical pansystolic murmur on cardiac examination. He had a mixed receptive and expressive aphasia, and a right hemiparesis. On rectal examination he had perianal erythema and diminished sphincter tone. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed infarction of the occipital and frontal lobes. Transesophageal Echocardiography of the heart revealed vegetations on the mitral valve. All of his blood culture bottles grew methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. He was successfully treated for bacterial endocarditis with intravenous nafcillin and gentamicin. The rectum is frequently colonized by Staphylococcus aureus and trauma to its mucosa can lead to bacteremia and endocarditis with this organism. In the absence of corroborative evidence such as presented here, it is difficult to make a correlation between staphylococcal endocarditis and anorectal foreign body insertion due to patients being less than forthcoming CONCLUSION: There is a potential risk of staphylococcal bacteremia and endocarditis with rectal foreign body insertion. Further studies are needed to explore this finding. Detailed sexual history and patient counseling should be made a part of routine primary care

    Disappearance of plasmaspheric hiss following interplanetary shock

    Abstract Plasmaspheric hiss is one of the important plasma waves controlling radiation belt dynamics. Its spatiotemporal distribution and generation mechanism are presently the object of active research. We here give the first report on the shock-induced disappearance of plasmaspheric hiss observed by the Van Allen Probes on 8 October 2013. This special event exhibits the dramatic variability of plasmaspheric hiss and provides a good opportunity to test its generation mechanisms. The origination of plasmaspheric hiss from plasmatrough chorus is suggested to be an appropriate prerequisite to explain this event. The shock increased the suprathermal electron fluxes, and then the enhanced Landau damping promptly prevented chorus waves from entering the plasmasphere. Subsequently, the shrinking magnetopause removed the source electrons for chorus, contributing significantly to the several-hours-long disappearance of plasmaspheric hiss

    Electronic structure and optical properties of Ca2Si films grown on silicon different oriented substrates and calculated from first principles

    The work considered the growth, optical properties and emerging interband transitions in Ca2Si films grown on silicon substrates with (111), (001), and (110) orientations at two temperatures (250 °C and 300 °C) using the sacrificial-template method. The optimum temperature for MBE single-phase growth of Ca2Si is 250 °C. Calculations of optical functions from the transmission and reflection spectra were carried out within the framework of a two-layer model and by the Kramers–Kronig method. It is shown that the main peaks in the experimental reflection spectra and the optical conductivity calculated according to Kramers–Kronig are in good agreement with each other. Comparison of ab initio calculations of the energy band structure and optical properties of a Ca2Si single crystal and two-dimensional Ca2Si layers with experimental data in the region of high-energy transitions showed good coincidence

    Formation, structure, and optical properties of single-phase CaSi and CaSi2 films on Si substrates

    In this paper, we report on optimizing the conditions for subsequently growing single-phase films of calcium monosilicide (CaSi) and calcium disilicide (CaSi2) on single-crystal silicon by reactive deposition epitaxy (RDE) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The temperature range for the growth of CaSi films (400–500 °C) was determined, as well as the temperature range (600–680°C) for the growth of CaSi2 films on silicon with three orientations: (111), (100) and (110). The minimum temperatures for the epitaxial growth of CaSi films by the RDE method and CaSi2 films by the MBE method were determined, amounting to, respectively, T = 475 °C and T = 640 °C. An increase in the ratio of Ca to Si deposition rates to 26 made it possible to grow a large-block CaSi2 epitaxial film with the hR6 structure by the MBE method at T = 680 °C. Raman spectra and reflection spectra from single-phase epitaxial CaSi and CaSi2 films on silicon were recorded and identified for the first time. The correspondence between the experimental reflection spectra and the theoretically calculated reflection spectra in terms of amplitude and peak positions at photon energies of 0.1–6.5 eV has been established. Single-phase CaSi and CaSi2 films retain transparency in the photon energy range 0.4–1.2 eV

    Impact of Anesthesia Method on Immune Response in Patients Undergoing Radical Surgery for Breast Cancer (a Meta-Analysis of Comparative Clinical Studies)

    Introduction and aim. Recent evidence suggests that inhalation anesthesia (IA) is associated with higher cancer mortality than total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA), possibly due to a modulation of the immune response.The aim of this study was to determine the impact of anesthesia techniques on selected parameters of patient immunity considering the evidence of relationship between the anesthesia methods and immune status and, consequently, the incidence of cancer recurrence.Methods. We performed a meta-analysis of clinical studies published in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases, aimed at assessing the impact of anesthesia on the postoperative immune status of patients undergoing breast cancer (BC) surgery. Five randomized and three observational studies were included (a total of 637 patients, of which 320 (50.2%) in the TIVA group). Data on leukocyte counts, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) 9 and 3, interleukins (IL) 6 and 10 levels, and neutrophil-lymphocyte index (NLI) values were retrieved.Results. Patients after breast cancer surgery who underwent TIVA had significantly lower white blood cell counts (standardized mean difference (SMD)=–0.32; 95% CI: –0.58 to –0.06; I2=58%, P=0.020) and MMP-9 (SMD=–0.35; 95% CI: –0.67 to –0.03; P=0.030; I2=0%) in the postoperative period compared with patients receiving IA. No significant differences in the levels of MMP-3, IL-6, IL-10, and NLI values were found between the two groups.Conclusion. The patients who underwent breast cancer surgery under TIVA had lower blood leukocyte counts and levels of MMP-9, which is involved in the remodeling of extracellular matrix, compared with those operated on under IA, suggesting that the anesthesia method may have an impact on the immunity of breast cancer patients

    Ca silicide films—promising materials for silicon optoelectronics

    Single-phase films of semiconductor and semimetallic calcium silicides (Ca2Si, CaSi, and CaSi2), as well as films with a significant contribution of Ca5Si3 and Ca14Si19 silicides, were grown on single-crystal silicon and sapphire substrates. The analysis of the crystal structure of the grown films was carried out and the criterion of their matching with silicon and sapphire substrates was determined. Some lattice-matching models were proposed, and the subsequent deformations of the silicide lattices were estimated. Film’s optical functions, including the optical transparency, were calculated from the optical spectroscopy data and an extended comparison was performed with the results of ab initio calculations. The real limits of the optical transparency for the films on sapphire substrates were established. The maximum transparency limit (3.9 eV) was observed for the CaSi film. Based on an analysis of the photoelectric properties of Ca2Si/Si diodes on n- and p-type silicon substrates, a perspective of their applications in silicon optoelectronics was discussed
