Este texto tem por objetivo promover reflexões sobre a ação didática do professor tutor na Educação a Distância, portanto abordamos algumas questões teóricas e epistemológicas que envolvem a educação; conversamos sobre a importância da utilização de ferramentas que propiciem a interação, a cooperação e a autonomia do estudante nessa modalidade de ensino; e tecemos algumas considerações sobre a prática da tutoria

    Evaluation of Calcium Hydroxide-Treated Stover (Second Crop) in Receiving and Growing Diets and Effects on Cattle Performance

    Production of ethanol from corn as an alternative fuel source has significantly affected the pricing landscape for corn as an energy source for livestock. As ethanol usage has become more prevalent, corn prices have become more volatile, especially in critical corn-growing areas that have been affected by drought. Consequently, many beef cattle feeders have become interested in alternative energy sources in an effort to control cost of gain. Second Crop (ADM Corp., Decatur, IL) is a process in which calcium hydroxide is added to fibrous crop residues, such as wheat straw and corn stover. When applied to low-quality roughages, calcium hydroxide disrupts the chemical bonds between lignin and hemicellulose, thus improving digestibility of the fiber by ruminal microbes. Treatment of low-quality forage with the Second Crop process could improve the energy value of forages, effectively decreasing reliance on cereal grains as sources of supplemental energy

    The spectrum of involuntary vocalizations in humans: A video atlas

    In clinical practice, involuntary vocalizing behaviors are typically associated with Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders. However, they may also be encountered throughout the entire tenor of neuropsychiatry, movement disorders, and neurodevelopmental syndromes. Importantly, involuntary vocalizing behaviors may often constitute a predominant clinical sign, and, therefore, their early recognition and appropriate classification are necessary to guide diagnosis and treatment. Clinical literature and video‐documented cases on the topic are surprisingly scarce. Here, we pooled data from 5 expert centers of movement disorders, with instructive video material to cover the entire range of involuntary vocalizations in humans. Medical literature was also reviewed to document the range of possible etiologies associated with the different types of vocalizing behaviors and to explore treatment options. We propose a phenomenological classification of involuntary vocalizations within different categorical domains, including (1) tics and tic‐like vocalizations, (2) vocalizations as part of stereotypies, (3) vocalizations as part of dystonia or chorea, (4) continuous vocalizing behaviors such as groaning or grunting, (5) pathological laughter and crying, (6) vocalizations resembling physiological reflexes, and (7) other vocalizations, for example, those associated with exaggerated startle responses, as part of epilepsy and sleep‐related phenomena. We provide comprehensive lists of their associated etiologies, including neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, neuroimmunological, and structural causes and clinical clues. We then expand on the pathophysiology of the different vocalizing behaviors and comment on available treatment options. Finally, we present an algorithmic approach that covers the wide range of involuntary vocalizations in humans, with the ultimate goal of improving diagnostic accuracy and guiding appropriate treatment

    Outcomes of open repair of postdissection abdominal aortic aneurysms

    Background: Evidence to guide management of postdissection abdominal aortic aneurysms (PDAAA) is lacking. This study describes the outcomes of open repair of PDAAA. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of all consecutive patients treated with open repair for PDAAA after a Stanford type A or type B thoracic aortic dissection between January 2006 and December 2017 in two vascular referral centers. Preceding type B dissection treatment could include conservative or surgical management. Primary outcomes were 30-day mortality, complication rates, survival, and reintervention-free survival. Survival and reintervention-free survival were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Reintervention was defined as any endovascular or surgical intervention after the index procedure. Results: Included were 36 patients (27 men [75%]) with a median age of 64 years (range, 35-81 years). The 30-day mortality was 2.7%. The median follow-up was 16 months (range, 0-88 months). The postoperative course was uneventful in 21 patients (58%). The most frequent complications were postoperative bleeding requiring repeat laparotomy (n = 4), pneumonia (n = 3), congestive heart failure (n = 2), new-onset atrial fibrillation (n = 2), mesenteric ischemia requiring left hemicolectomy (n=1), and ischemic cerebrovascular accident (n = 1). Renal failure requiring hemodialysis developed in one patient. The overall survival at 1 year was 88.8%. Reintervention-free survival was 95.5% after 1 year and 88.6% after 2 years. Conclusions: Open repair of PDAAA can be performed with a low mortality rate and an acceptable complication rate, comparable with elective open repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms without dissection

    AbstractAn increased use of bioprosthetic heart valves has stimulated an interest in possible transcatheter options for bioprosthetic valve failure given the high operative risk. The encouraging results of transcatheter aortic valve implantation in high-risk surgical candidates with native disease have led to the development of the transcatheter valve-in-valve (VIV) procedures for failed bioprostheses. VIV procedures are unique in many ways, and there is an increased need for multimodality imaging in a team-based approach. The echocardiographic approach to VIV procedures has not previously been described. In this review, we summarize key echocardiographic requirements for optimal patient selection, procedural guidance, and immediate post-procedural assessment for VIV procedures

    Effects of Pre-Cutting Round Alfalfa Hay Bales on Forage Quality and Processing Time

    Round hay balers with knives that cut the hay as it enters the baling chamber reduce the particle size upon baling, and eliminate the need for a tub grinder. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a round hay baler with knives on forage quality of alfalfa hay at baling and after storage, and the effects of the processing method on nutrient composition and particle size distribution. Alfalfa hay was baled (560 M Megawide HC2, John Deere, Moline, IL) with knives every 4 inches (CUT; theo­retical length of cut) or without knives (NORM). At baling and after 6 months of uncovered storage, bales were weighed, measured, and 10 core samples were obtained for nutrient analysis. Cores were separated into outer 6 inches and inner 6- to 18-inch segments to determine the depth of spoilage. After storage, particle size was reduced to approximately 4 inches using a mixer wagon for CUT (CUT-MIX) or a tub grinder for NORM (NORM-GRIND). Compared with NORM, CUT increased bale weight and density. Core depth interacted with storage timepoint whereby acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentration increased more for outer than inner cores from baling to the end of storage, with similar effects for lignin and 240-hour undigest­ible NDF. Compared with NORM, CUT increased concentrations of aNDF organic matter, ADF, and lignin, and decreased relative forage quality (RFQ). The CUT-MIX treatment increased time to reduce particle size, but decreased processing shrink by 6.1% compared with NORM-GRIND. Additionally, when compared with NORM-GRIND, CUT-MIX increased fiber content and decreased fiber digestibility, which may have been due to sampling error from longer particle size. In summary, CUT produced larger, more dense bales and increased fiber content slightly, and CUT-MIX decreased processing shrink but increased fiber content with additional longer particles after processing, which could be advantageous for physically effective fiber in ruminant diets. Further work should continue to evaluate leaf loss during baling, and options for processing and incorporating pre-cut hay into diets

    CD28 between tolerance and autoimmunity: The side effects of animal models [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

    Regulation of immune responses is critical for ensuring pathogen clearance and for preventing reaction against self-antigens. Failure or breakdown of immunological tolerance results in autoimmunity. CD28 is an important co-stimulatory receptor expressed on T cells that, upon specific ligand binding, delivers signals essential for full T-cell activation and for the development and homeostasis of suppressive regulatory T cells. Many in vivo mouse models have been used for understanding the role of CD28 in the maintenance of immune homeostasis, thus leading to the development of CD28 signaling modulators that have been approved for the treatment of some autoimmune diseases. Despite all of this progress, a deeper understanding of the differences between the mouse and human receptor is required to allow a safe translation of pre-clinical studies in efficient therapies. In this review, we discuss the role of CD28 in tolerance and autoimmunity and the clinical efficacy of drugs that block or enhance CD28 signaling, by highlighting the success and failure of pre-clinical studies, when translated to humans

    Diagnóstico da qualidade do solo sob cultivo de pêssego em agroecossistemas de base familiar

    O objetivo do estudo foi diagnosticar a qualidade do solo utilizando indicadores químicos, físicos, e biológicos, em pomares de cinco propriedades agrícolas familiares produtoras de pêssego, localizadas em Pelotas, Território Zona Sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Os resultados mostram que as condições físicas dos solos analisados apresentam-se, em geral, com níveis adequados e próximos das condições encontradas nas áreas de vegetação nativa. Já as condições químicas sugerem, pelos desempenhos dos indicadores considerados, níveis adequados de fertilidade do solo, variando os mesmos entre médio a alto. No entanto, as condições biológicas dos solos estão abaixo dos níveis adequados, indicando que a qualidade dos solos estudados está aquém do nível desejado, tendo em vista que essas condições são fundamentais para que o solo possa exercer adequadamente suas funções no agroecossistema.This study was conducted in five family agroecosystems in Pelotas, located in the South Zone of Rio Grande do Sul state. The aim of this study was to elaborate a diagnosis of soil quality under peach cultivation through analysis of physical, chemical and biological soil indicators. The results show that the physical conditions are adequate and similar to the areas of native vegetation. The chemical conditions presented appropriate levels of soil fertility, ranging between medium to high levels. However, the soil biological conditions were below the adequate level. Thus, the soil quality of these agroecossystems was considered inadequate, decreasing the soil capacity to function satisfactorily.Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestale
