United Airlines LOFT training
Line oriented training is used in a broader, more generic sense that as a specific program under FAR 12.1409 and AC 120-35. A company policy was adopted more than twenty years ago requiring that all pilot checks and recurrent training be conducted with a full crew occupying the seats they occupy on the line. Permission was obtained to reschedule the hours for recurrent proficiency training to include one and one-half hours of LOFT flight. The number of emergencies and abnormal procedures which could be undertaken were considered and the introduction of an a occasional incapacitation revealed which person is the most difficult to replace on the widebodies. By using the LOFT concept, every training period can be structured like a typical line flight. The use of LOFT in simulator syllabus development and problems that need to be refined are discussed
Renewal theory of coupled neuronal pools
A theory is provided to analyze the dynamics of delay-coupled pools of spiking neurons based on stability
analysis of stationary firing. Transitions between stable and unstable regimes can be predicted by bifurcation analysis of the underlying integral dynamics. Close to the bifurcation point the network exhibits slowly changingactivities and allows for slow collective phenomena like continuous attractors
Conditional sampling for barrier option pricing under the LT method
We develop a conditional sampling scheme for pricing knock-out barrier
options under the Linear Transformations (LT) algorithm from Imai and Tan
(2006). We compare our new method to an existing conditional Monte Carlo scheme
from Glasserman and Staum (2001), and show that a substantial variance
reduction is achieved. We extend the method to allow pricing knock-in barrier
options and introduce a root-finding method to obtain a further variance
reduction. The effectiveness of the new method is supported by numerical
results
Dynamically-Coupled Oscillators -- Cooperative Behavior via Dynamical Interaction --
We propose a theoretical framework to study the cooperative behavior of
dynamically coupled oscillators (DCOs) that possess dynamical interactions.
Then, to understand synchronization phenomena in networks of interneurons which
possess inhibitory interactions, we propose a DCO model with dynamics of
interactions that tend to cause 180-degree phase lags. Employing an approach
developed here, we demonstrate that although our model displays synchronization
at high frequencies, it does not exhibit synchronization at low frequencies
because this dynamical interaction does not cause a phase lag sufficiently
large to cancel the effect of the inhibition. We interpret the disappearance of
synchronization in our model with decreasing frequency as describing the
breakdown of synchronization in the interneuron network of the CA1 area below
the critical frequency of 20 Hz.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Observations of Mira stars with the IOTA/FLUOR interferometer and comparison with Mira star models
We present K'-band observations of five Mira stars with the IOTA
interferometer. The interferograms were obtained with the FLUOR fiber optics
beam combiner, which provides high-accuracy visibility measurements in spite of
time-variable atmospheric conditions. For the M-type Miras X Oph, R Aql, RU
Her, R Ser, and the C-type Mira V CrB we derived the uniform-disk diameters
11.7mas, 10.9mas, 8.4mas, 8.1mas, and 7.9mas (+/- 0.3mas), respectively.
Simultaneous photometric observations yielded the bolometric fluxes. The
derived angular Rosseland radii and the bolometric fluxes allowed the
determination of effective temperatures. For instance, the effective
temperature of R Aql was determined to be 2970 +/- 110 K. A linear Rosseland
radius for R Aql of (250 +100/-60) Rsun was derived from the angular Rosseland
radius of 5.5mas +/- 0.2mas and the HIPPARCOS parallax of 4.73mas +/- 1.19mas.
The observations were compared with theoretical Mira star models of Bessel et
al. (1996) and Hofmann et al. (1998). The effective temperatures of the M-type
Miras and the linear radius of R Aql indicate fundamental mode pulsation.Comment: 12 pages, 4 postscript figure

We present a compact module, emitting nearly diffraction limited green laser light at 531 nm at an average output power of more than 500 mW. As pump source for the second harmonic generation a DBR tapered laser with a total length of 6 mm was used. The RW section had a length of 2 mm including a 1 mm long passive DBR section. The devices were mounted p-side up on a copper block. For this mounting scheme, the device reaches up to 7 W maximal output power. At the power level of about 3.8 W used in the presented experiment, a wavelength of 1062.6 nm with a line-width below 0.02 nm (FWHM) was determined. More than 80% of the emitted power is originated within the central lobe of the beam waist profile illustrating the nearly diffraction limited beam quality. Using a 30mm long MgO-doped periodically poled LiNbO3 bulk crystal, the second harmonic wave is generated in a single-pass setup. Due to precise alignment and beam shaping based on the results of numerical simulations and a properly temperature control of the PPLN crystal, a maximum optical conversion efficiency of more than 14% (3.7%/W) was achieved. The fluctuation of the output power is far below 1%
Neural Network Model for Apparent Deterministic Chaos in Spontaneously Bursting Hippocampal Slices
A neural network model that exhibits stochastic population bursting is
studied by simulation. First return maps of inter-burst intervals exhibit
recurrent unstable periodic orbit (UPO)-like trajectories similar to those
found in experiments on hippocampal slices. Applications of various control
methods and surrogate analysis for UPO-detection also yield results similar to
those of experiments. Our results question the interpretation of the
experimental data as evidence for deterministic chaos and suggest caution in

Genuine converging solution of self-consistent field equations for extended many-electron systems
Calculations of the ground state of inhomogeneous many-electron systems
involve a solving of the Poisson equation for Coulomb potential and the
Schroedinger equation for single-particle orbitals. Due to nonlinearity and
complexity this set of equations, one believes in the iterative method for the
solution that should consist in consecutive improvement of the potential and
the electron density until the self-consistency is attained. Though this
approach exists for a long time there are two grave problems accompanying its
implementation to infinitely extended systems. The first of them is related
with the Poisson equation and lies in possible incompatibility of the boundary
conditions for the potential with the electron density distribution. The
analysis of this difficulty and suggested resolution are presented for both
infinite conducting systems in jellium approximation and periodic solids. It
provides the existence of self-consistent solution for the potential at every
iteration step due to realization of a screening effect. The second problem
results from the existence of continuous spectrum of Hamiltonian eigenvalues
for unbounded systems. It needs to have a definition of Hilbert space basis
with eigenfunctions of continuous spectrum as elements, which would be
convenient in numerical applications. The definition of scalar product
specifying the Hilbert space is proposed that incorporates a limiting
transition. It provides self-adjointness of Hamiltonian and, respectively, the
orthogonality of eigenfunctions corresponding to the different eigenvalues. In
addition, it allows to normalize them effectively to delta-function and to
prove in the general case the orthogonality of the 'right' and 'left'

New insights on the AU-scale circumstellar structure of FU Orionis
We report new near-infrared, long-baseline interferometric observations at
the AU scale of the pre-main-sequence star FU Orionis with the PTI, IOTA and
VLTI interferometers. This young stellar object has been observed on 42 nights
over a period of 6 years from 1998 to 2003. We have obtained 287 independent
measurements of the fringe visibility with 6 different baselines ranging from
20 to 110 meters in length, in the H and K bands. Our extensive (u,v)-plane
coverage, coupled with the published spectral energy distribution data, allows
us to test the accretion disk scenario. We find that the most probable
explanation for these observations is that FU Ori hosts an active accretion
disk whose temperature law is consistent with standard models. We are able to
constrain the geometry of the disk, including an inclination of 55 deg and a
position angle of 47 deg. In addition, a 10 percent peak-to-peak oscillation is
detected in the data (at the two-sigma level) from the longest baselines, which
we interpret as a possible disk hot-spot or companion. However, the oscillation
in our best data set is best explained with an unresolved spot located at a
projected distance of 10 AU at the 130 deg position angle and with a magnitude
difference of DeltaK = 3.9 and DeltaH = 3.6 mag moving away from the center at
a rate of 1.2 AU/yr. we propose to interpret this spot as the signature of a
companion of the central FU Ori system on an extremely eccentric orbit. We
speculate that the close encounter of this putative companion and the central
star could be the explanation of the initial photometric rise of the luminosity
of this object
