    Modeling the climate impact of Southern Hemisphere ozone depletion:the importance of the ozone dataset

    The ozone hole is an important driver of recent Southern Hemisphere (SH) climate change, and capturing these changes is a goal of climate modeling. Most climate models are driven by off-line ozone data sets. Previous studies have shown that there is a substantial range in estimates of SH ozone depletion, but the implications of this range have not been examined systematically. We use a climate model to evaluate the difference between using the ozone forcing (Stratospheric Processes and their Role in Climate (SPARC)) used by many Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) models and one at the upper end of the observed depletion estimates (Binary Database of Profiles (BDBP)). In the stratosphere, we find that austral spring/summer polar cap cooling, geopotential height decreases, and zonal wind increases in the BDBP simulations are all doubled compared to the SPARC simulations, while tropospheric responses are 20–100% larger. These results are important for studies attempting to diagnose the climate fingerprints of ozone depletion

    Photosynthetic and Respiratory Acclimation of Understory Shrubs in Response to in situ Experimental Warming of a Wet Tropical Forest

    Despite the importance of tropical forests to global carbon balance, our understanding of how tropical plant physiology will respond to climate warming is limited. In addition, the contribution of tropical forest understories to global carbon cycling is predicted to increase with rising temperatures, however, in situ warming studies of tropical forest plants to date focus only on upper canopies. We present results of an in situ field-scale +4°C understory infrared warming experiment in Puerto Rico (Tropical Responses to Altered Climate Experiment; TRACE). We investigated gas exchange responses of two common understory shrubs, Psychotria brachiata and Piper glabrescens, after exposure to 4 and 8 months warming. We assessed physiological acclimation in two ways: (1) by comparing plot-level physiological responses in heated versus control treatments before and after warming, and (2) by examining physiological responses of individual plants to variation in environmental drivers across all plots, seasons, and treatments. P. brachiata has the capacity to up-regulate (i.e., acclimate) photosynthesis through broadened thermal niche and up-regulation of photosynthetic temperature optimum (Topt) with warmer temperatures. P. glabrescens, however, did not upregulate any photosynthetic parameter, but rather experienced declines in the rate of photosynthesis at the optimum temperature (Aopt), corresponding with lower stomatal conductance under warmer daily temperatures. Contrary to expectation, neither species showed strong evidence for respiratory acclimation. P. brachiata down-regulated basal respiration with warmer daily temperatures during the drier winter months only. P. glabrescens showed no evidence of respiratory acclimation. Unexpectedly, soil moisture, was the strongest environmental driver of daily physiological temperature responses, not vegetation temperature. Topt increased, while photosynthesis and basal respiration declined as soils dried, suggesting that drier conditions negatively affected carbon uptake for both species. Overall, P. brachiata, an early successional shrub, showed higher acclimation potential to daily temperature variations, potentially mitigating negative effects of chronic warming. The negative photosynthetic response to warming experienced by P. glabrescens, a mid-successional shrub, suggests that this species may not be able to as successfully tolerate future, warmer temperatures. These results highlight the importance of considering species when assessing climate change and relay the importance of soil moisture on plant function in large-scale warming experiments

    Complex-valued wavelet lifting and applications

    Signals with irregular sampling structures arise naturally in many fields. In applications such as spectral decomposition and nonparametric regression, classical methods often assume a regular sampling pattern, thus cannot be applied without prior data processing. This work proposes new complex-valued analysis techniques based on the wavelet lifting scheme that removes ‘one coefficient at a time’. Our proposed lifting transform can be applied directly to irregularly sampled data and is able to adapt to the signal(s)’ characteristics. As our new lifting scheme produces complex-valued wavelet coefficients, it provides an alternative to the Fourier transform for irregular designs, allowing phase or directional information to be represented. We discuss applications in bivariate time series analysis, where the complex-valued lifting construction allows for coherence and phase quantification. We also demonstrate the potential of this flexible methodology over real-valued analysis in the nonparametric regression context

    Publisher Connection: Export-Led Growth in the UAE: Multivariate Causality Between Primary Exports, Manufactured Exports and Economic Growth

    The principal question that this research addresses is the validity of the Export-Led Growth hypothesis (ELG) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over the period 1981–2012, focusing on the causality between primary exports, manufactured exports and economic growth. Unit root tests are applied to examine the time-series properties of the variables, while the Johansen cointegration test is performed to confirm or not the existence of a long-run relationship between the variables. Moreover, the multivariate Granger causality test and a modified version of Wald test are applied to examine the direction of the short-run and long-run causality respectively. The cointegration analysis reveals that manufactured exports contribute more to economic growth than primary exports in the long-run. In addition, this research provides evidence to support a bi-directional causality between manufactured exports and economic growth in the short-run, while the Growth-Led Exports (GLE) hypothesis is valid in the long-run for UAE

    Energy Consumption and Economic Growth - New Insights into the Cointegration Relationship

    This paper examines the long-run relationship between energy consumption and real GDP, including energy prices, for 25 OECD countries from 1981 to 2007. The distinction between common factors and idiosyncratic components using principal component analysis allows to distinguish between developments on an international and a national level as drivers of the long-run relationship. Indeed, cointegration between the common components of the underlying variables indicates that international developments dominate the long-run relationship between energy consumption and real GDP. Furthermore, the results suggest that energy consumption is price-inelastic. Causality tests indicate the presence of a bi-directional causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth.Dieses Papier untersucht unter Einbeziehung von Energiepreisen die langfristige Beziehung zwischen Energieverbrauch und realen BIP für 25 OECD Länder von 1981 bis 2007. Durch die Unterscheidung von gemeinsamen und idiosynkratischen Komponenten mit Hilfe einer Faktoranalyse kann zwischen Entwicklungen auf internationaler und nationaler Ebene als Treiber der Langfristbeziehung differenziert werden. In der Tat deutet Kointegration zwischen den gemeinsamen Faktoren der zugrundeliegenden Variablen darauf hin, dass internationale Entwicklungen die langfristige Beziehung zwischen Energieverbrauch und realem BIP dominieren. Des Weiteren suggerieren die ökonometrischen Ergebnisse, dass der Energieverbrauch relativ preisunelastisch ist.     Cross-Section Dependence and the Monetary Exchange Rate Model: A Panel Analysis

    This paper tackles the issue of cross-section dependence for the monetary exchange rate model in the presence of unobserved common factors using panel data from 1973 until 2007 for 19 OECD countries. Applying a principal component analysis we distinguish between common factors and idiosyncratic components and determine whether non-stationarity stems from international or national stochastic trends. We find evidence for a cross-section cointegration relationship between the exchange rates and fundamentals which is driven by those common international trends. In addition, the estimated coefficients of income and money are in line with the suggestions of the monetary model

    Seasonal and latitudinal variations in the energy reserves of the mud fiddler crab Uca pugnax: implications for the response to climate change

    In 2014, the Atlantic mud fiddler crab Uca pugnax was found 80 km north of its previously known northern range limit. Two years before this shift was noted, we collected a total of 781 male and female specimens from 6 populations along a latitudinal transect extending from Wareham, Massachusetts (41.7615°N), to Tybee Island, Georgia (32.0139°N), USA. By assessing latitudinal and seasonal patterns in the hepatosomatic index (HSI; a measure of stored energy) and the reproductive status of females, we sought to determine whether adult physiological and reproductive limits might slow the northern expansion of U. pugnax. We did not find a latitudinal cline for HSI, suggesting that U. pugnax is a thermal generalist; however, both males and females in the southern part of the range showed greater seasonal fluctuations in HSI compared to northern conspecifics. Across the range, ovigerous females had a significantly reduced HSI, revealing the cost of reproduction. Ovigerous females were found in the May 2013 collection in Massachusetts before ocean conditions were permissible for larval development and earlier than previously reported for this species. U. pugnax is expected to closely track warming conditions in the Northwest Atlantic because adults in northern populations are able to maintain energy stores comparable to that of their southern conspecifics, and they release planktonic larvae in early spring, maximizing their dispersal potential
