    Age Estimation of Burbot Using Pectoral Fin Rays, Branchiostegal Rays and Otoliths

    Throughout much of its native distribution, burbot (Lota lota) is a species of conservation concern.  Understanding dynamic rate functions is critical for the effective management of sensitive burbot populations, which necessitates accurate and precise age estimates.  Managing sensitive burbot populations requires an accurate and precise non-lethal alternative.  In an effort to identify a non-lethal ageing structure, we compared the precision of age estimates obtained from otoliths, pectoral fin rays, dorsal fin rays and branchiostegal rays from 208 burbot collected from the Green River drainage, Wyoming.  Additionally, we compared the accuracy of age estimates from pectoral fin rays, dorsal fin rays and branchiostegal rays to those of otoliths.  Dorsal fin rays were immediately deemed a poor ageing structure and removed from further analysis.  Age-bias plots of consensus ages derived from branchiostegal rays and pectoral fin rays were appreciably different from those obtained from otoliths.  Exact agreement between readers and reader confidence was highest for otoliths and lowest for branchiostegal rays.  Age-bias plots indicated that age estimates obtained from branchiostegal rays and pectoral fin rays were substantially different from age estimates obtained from otoliths.  Our results indicate that otoliths provide the most precise age estimates for burbot

    DIET OF JUVENILE BURBOT AND INSIGHT INTO GAPE LIMITATION

    Throughout much of their distribution, Burbot (Lota lota ) populations are declining or have been extirpated.  Burbot in the Kootenai River, Idaho represent one such imperiled population.  In an effort to restore Burbot in the Kootenai River, managers have turned to conservation aquaculture.  However, no appreciable increase in natural recruitment has been observed in the system.  The lack of natural recruitment is believed to be partly due to a deficiency of high-quality prey.  As a result, we sought to i) describe the diet of juvenile Burbot, ii) evaluate the influence of Burbot mouth gape on diet and iii) estimate prey availability at release locations.  Burbot were stocked into two earthen ponds at the Boundary Creek Wildlife Management Area (BCWMA) and sampled weekly to evaluate diet.  Zooplankton were sampled weekly from each pond and from release locations of hatchery-reared Burbot (i.e., Kootenai River, Goat River, Boundary Creek, Deep Creek) to quantify prey availability.  Over the course of the study (~3 months), Burbot primarily fed on Cyclopoida.  Burbot never appeared to be gape limited and exhibited little variability in the size of zooplankton ingested.  Zooplankton densities at stocking locations were relatively low in comparison to BCWMA ponds.  Low zooplankton densities at release sites indicate that alternative management actions may need to be considered to enhance Burbot recruitment in the Kootenai River drainage

    Burbot (Lota lota) are an apex piscivore that were illegally introduced to the Green River drainage, Wyoming, raising concerns for the conservation and management of fishes throughout the basin.  However, relatively little is known about the diet of non-native burbot.  The objectives of this research were to characterize diet composition of burbot and identify differences in diet composition as a function of sampling gear.  Diet composition was characterized using frequency of occurrence, percent by number, and percent by weight to identify the importance of each prey type to burbot.  Diet composition was compared across gears to identify the relationship between gear and diet.  Fishes were present in the stomach contents of nearly all burbot sampled and composed 62–100 percent of the stomach contents of burbot greater than 300 mm.  Prey diversity was greatest in diets of burbot sampled with small-mesh hoop nets.  Results from the current study provide important information on the diet of non-native burbot and highlight the potential influence of gear on diet studies

    Antenatal intervention for congenital fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

    To evaluate the effectiveness of antenatal intervention for the treatment of congenital lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) in improving perinatal survival and postnatal renal function. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched from their inception until May 2018. Selection criteria included randomized controlled trials and controlled nonrandomized observational studies including fetuses with ultrasound evidence of LUTO evaluating antenatal intervention for improving perinatal outcomes. Any type of intervention was analyzed. The primary outcome was perinatal survival. The secondary outcome was postnatal survival with normal renal function. The summary measures were reported as summary odds ratio (OR) with 95% of confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Ten articles with a total of 355 fetuses were included in the meta-analysis. Inclusion criteria of the selected studies were singleton pregnancy with severe LUTO confirmed on detailed fetal ultrasound examination. Nine studies, analyzed the efficacy of vesico-amniotic shunt performed in the second trimester. The overall estimate survival was higher in the vesico-amniotic shunt group compared to the conservative group (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.14-5.67). 64/112 fetuses (57.1%) survived in the vesico-amniotic shunt group compared to 52/134 (38.8%) in the control group. Five studies reported on postnatal renal function between 6 months and 2 years. Postnatal renal function was higher in the vesico-amniotic shunt group compared to the conservative group (OR 2.09, 95% CI 0.74-5.9). Fetal cystoscopy was performed in only two included studies. Overall, 45 fetuses underwent fetal cystoscopy. The perinatal survival was higher in the cystoscopy group compared to the conservative management group (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.07-6.47). Normal renal function was noted in 13/34 fetuses in the cystoscopy group versus 12/61 in the conservative management group at 6 months follow-up (OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.05-2.92) Conclusions: Antenatal bladder drainage appears to improve perinatal survival in cases of LUTO. Further randomized trials with long-term follow-up are required to determine the role of antenatal treatment in clinical setting

    Perinatal death by bile acid levels in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: a systematic review

    Background: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is characterized by the elevation of total bile acids (TBAs). The primary concern in women with ICP is the increased risk of stillbirth. ICP is generally considered as “mild” when TBA levels range from 10 to 39 µmol/L and “severe” with levels greater than 40 µmol/L, although levels of TBA ≥100 µmol/L have been also considered as a further threshold of severity. Objective: To quantify the association between different severities of ICP (TBA 10–39, 40–99, and ≥100 µmol/L) and perinatal death. Data sources: Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Sciences, and ClinicalTrial.gov were searched from the inception of each database to February 2019. Methods of study selection: Randomized, cohort, case-control, or case series studies reporting maternal and perinatal outcomes on women with ICP by the three prespecified TBA levels (10–39, 40–99, and ≥100 µmol/L) were included. We excluded multiple gestations and trials which included an intervention. The analysis was performed with Pearson chi-square and Fisher’s exact test as appropriate. Continuous outcomes were compared using metaregression with inverse variance weighting using reported sample sizes and standard deviations. Pairwise comparisons used a Bonferroni correction to control for multiple testing. Tabulation, integration, and results: Six articles including 1280 singleton pregnancies affected by ICP were included in the systematic review. Out of the 1280 singleton pregnancies affected by ICP included, 118 had ICP with TBA ≥100 µmol/L. Perinatal death was more common in women with TBA ≥100 µmol/L (0.4% for TBA 10-39 μmol/L versus 0.3% for TBA 40-99 μmol/L versus 6.8% for TBA ≥ 100 μmol/L, p <.0001). Of the 8 perinatal deaths in the TBA ≥100 µmol/L group, 3 occurred ≥34 weeks. TBA ≥100 µmol/L increased the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) (5.4% versus 8.6% versus 18.2% respectively, p <.0001) and iatrogenic PTB (10.8% versus 21.6% versus 35.8% respectively, p<.0001) as well as meconium-stained amniotic fluid (9.0% versus 18.4% versus 31.6% respectively, p <.0001). Conclusions: Maternal TBA ≥100 µmol/L is associated with a 6.8% incidence of perinatal death, most of which (5.9% overall) are stillbirths, while TBA <100 µmol/L are associated with an incidence of perinatal death of 0.3%. It may be reasonable to consider late preterm delivery (at about 35–36 weeks) in women with TBA ≥100 µmol/L

    The Primordial Binary Population - I: A near-infrared adaptive optics search for close visual companions to A star members of Scorpius OB2

    We present the results of a near-infrared adaptive optics survey with the aim to detect close companions to Hipparcos members in the three subgroups of the nearby OB association Sco OB2: Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL) and Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC). We have targeted 199 A-type and late B-type stars in the Ks band, and a subset also in the J and H band. We find 151 stellar components other than the target stars. A brightness criterion is used to separate these components into 77 background stars and 74 candidate physical companion stars. Out of these 74 candidate companions, 41 have not been reported before (14 in US; 13 in UCL; 14 in LCC). Companion star masses range from 0.1 to 3 Msun. The mass ratio distribution follows f(q) = q^-0.33, which excludes random pairing. No close (rho < 3.75'') companion stars or background stars are found in the magnitude range 12 < Ks < 14. The lack of stars with these properties cannot be explained by low-number statistics, and may imply a lower limit on the companion mass of ~ 0.1 Msun. Close stellar components with Ks > 14 are observed. If these components are very low-mass companion stars, a gap in the companion mass distribution might be present. The small number of close low-mass companion stars could support the embryo-ejection formation scenario for brown dwarfs. Our findings are compared with and complementary to visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric data on binarity in Sco OB2. We find an overall companion star fraction of 0.52 in this association.     Assessment of Potential Augmentation and Management Strategies for Razorback Sucker \u3cem\u3eXyrauchen texanus\u3c/em\u3e in Lake Mead and Grand Canyon: A 2021 Science Panel Summary

    Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen texanus is a large-bodied, long-lived species endemic to the Colorado River Basin. This species historically ranged throughout the basin from the Colorado River delta in Mexico to Wyoming and Colorado. Currently, the species persists ,in a small portion of its historical range with the help of intensive management efforts including augmentation. Recruitment to adult life stages is extremely limited in the wild, but is documented consistently in Lake Mead. Research and monitoring efforts in Lake Mead are ongoing since 1996 and have recently expanded to include the Colorado River inflow area and portions of lower Grand Canyon. Despite evidence of recruitment, the current population size in Lake Mead and Grand Canyon is believed to be small (data) and susceptible to stochastic effects. This raised interest in the potential to augment the population to prevent loss of genetic diversity and increase abundance and distribution in general, as well as explore recruitment bottlenecks. To address critical uncertainties surrounding this management option and to brainstorm other potential options, a Planning Committee and Steering Committee made up of representatives of state (Arizona, Nevada), tribal (Hualapai Tribe, Navajo Nation), and federal (Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) management agencies convened an Expert Science Panel (ESP; 2021), to consider augmentation and management strategies for Razorback Sucker in Lake Mead and Grand Canyon. The purpose of this report is to summarize those findings
