A shared framework for the common mental disorders and Non-Communicable Disease: key considerations for disease prevention and control.
BACKGROUND: Historically, the focus of Non Communicable Disease (NCD) prevention and control has been cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. Collectively, these account for more deaths than any other NCDs. Despite recent calls to include the common mental disorders (CMDs) of depression and anxiety under the NCD umbrella, prevention and control of these CMDs remain largely separate and independent. DISCUSSION: In order to address this gap, we apply a framework recently proposed by the Centers for Disease Control with three overarching objectives: (1) to obtain better scientific information through surveillance, epidemiology, and prevention research; (2) to disseminate this information to appropriate audiences through communication and education; and (3) to translate this information into action through programs, policies, and systems. We conclude that a shared framework of this type is warranted, but also identify opportunities within each objective to advance this agenda and consider the potential benefits of this approach that may exist beyond the health care system
Partonic effects on anisotropic flows at RHIC
We report recent results from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model on the
azimuthal anisotropies of particle momentum distributions in heavy ion
collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These include higher-order
anisotropic flows and their scaling, the rapidity dependence of anisotropic

Anisotropic flow at RHIC: How unique is the number-of-constituent-quark scaling?
The transverse momentum dependence of the anisotropic flow for ,
, nucleon, , and is studied for Au+Au collisions at
GeV within two independent string-hadron transport
approaches (RQMD and UrQMD). Although both models reach only 60% of the
absolute magnitude of the measured , they both predict the particle type
dependence of , as observed by the RHIC experiments: exhibits a
hadron-mass hierarchy (HMH) in the low region and a
number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) dependence in the intermediate region.
The failure of the hadronic models to reproduce the absolute magnitude of the
observed indicates that transport calculations of heavy ion collisions at
RHIC must incorporate interactions among quarks and gluons in the early, hot
and dense phase. The presence of an NCQ scaling in the string-hadron model
results suggests that the particle-type dependencies observed in heavy-ion
collisions at intermediate might be related to the hadronic cross

Directed and Elliptic Flow at RHIC
We present the directed flow measurement () from Au+Au collisions at
\sqrtsNN = 62 GeV. Over the pseudorapidity range we have studied, which
covers from -1.2 to 1.2 and , the magnitude of
for charged particles is found to increase monotonously with pseudorapidity for
all centralities. No `` wiggle'', as predicted by various theoretical
models, is observed at midrapidity. Elliptic flow () from moderate high
particles () at \sqrtsNN = 200 GeV is presented as a
function of impact parameter. It is found that models that are based on {\it
jet quenching} alone appear to underpredict at moderate high , while
the model that incorporates both, recombination and fragmentation, describes

A ‘quiet revolution’? The impact of Training Schools on initial teacher training partnerships
This paper discusses the impact on initial teacher training of a new policy initiative in England: the introduction of Training Schools. First, the Training School project is set in context by exploring the evolution of a partnership approach to initial teacher training in England. Ways in which Training Schools represent a break with established practice are considered together with their implications for the dominant mode of partnership led by higher education institutions (HEIs). The capacity of Training Schools to achieve their own policy objectives is examined, especially their efficacy as a strategy for managing innovation and the dissemination of innovation. The paper
ends by focusing on a particular Training School project which has adopted an unusual approach to its work and enquires whether this alternative approach could offer a more profitable way forward. During the course of the paper, five different models of partnership are considered:
collaborative, complementary, HEI-led, school-led and partnership within a partnership
Risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality: impact of impaired health-related functioning and diabetes: the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) study.
OBJECTIVE: There is an established link between health-related functioning (HRF) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and it is known that those with diabetes predominantly die of CVD. However, few studies have determined the combined impact of diabetes and impaired HRF on CVD mortality. We investigated whether this combination carries a higher CVD risk than either component alone. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) study included 11,247 adults aged ≥ 25 years from 42 randomly selected areas of Australia. At baseline (1999-2000), diabetes status was defined using the World Health Organization criteria and HRF was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall, after 7.4 years of follow-up, 57 persons with diabetes and 105 without diabetes had died from CVD. In individuals with and without diabetes, HRF measures were significant predictors of increased CVD mortality. The CVD mortality risks among those with diabetes or impaired physical health component summary (PCS) alone were similar (diabetes only: hazard ratio 1.4 [95% CI 0.7-2.7]; impaired PCS alone: 1.5 [1.0-2.4]), while those with both diabetes and impaired PCS had a much higher CVD mortality (2.8 [1.6-4.7]) compared with those without diabetes and normal PCS (after adjustment for multiple covariates). Similar results were found for the mental health component summary. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that the combination of diabetes and impaired HRF is associated with substantially higher CVD mortality. This suggests that, among those with diabetes, impaired HRF is likely to be important in the identification of individuals at increased risk of CVD mortality
Molecular prediction of disease risk and severity in a large Dutch Crohn's disease cohort
Item does not contain fulltextBACKGROUND: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis have a complex genetic background. We assessed the risk for both the development and severity of the disease by combining information from genetic variants associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: We studied 2804 patients (1684 with Crohn's disease and 1120 with ulcerative colitis) and 1350 controls from seven university hospitals. Details of the phenotype were available for 1600 patients with Crohn's disease and for 800 with ulcerative colitis. Genetic association for disease susceptibility was tested for the nucleotide-binding and oligomerisation domain 2 gene (NOD2), the IBD5 locus, the Drosophila discs large homologue 5 and autophagy-related 16-like 1 genes (DLG5 and ATG16L1) and the interleukin 23 receptor gene (IL23R). Interaction analysis was performed for Crohn's disease using the most associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for each locus. Odds ratios were calculated in an ordinal regression analysis with the number of risk alleles as an independent variable to analyse disease development and severity. RESULTS: Association with Crohn's disease was confirmed for NOD2, IBD5, DLG5, ATG16L1 and IL23R. Patients with Crohn's disease carry more risk alleles than controls (p = 3.85 x 10(-22)). Individuals carrying an increasing number of risk alleles have an increasing risk for Crohn's disease, consistent with an independent effects multiplicative model (trend analysis p = 4.25 x 10(-23)). Patients with Crohn's disease with a more severe disease course, operations or an age of onset below 40 years have more risk alleles compared to non-stricturing, non-penetrating behaviour (p = 0.0008), no operations (p = 0.02) or age of onset above 40 years (p = 0.028). CONCLUSION: Crohn's disease is a multigenic disorder. An increase in the number of risk alleles is associated with an increased risk for the development of Crohn's disease and with a more severe disease course. Combining information from the known common risk polymorphisms may enable clinicians to predict the course of Crohn's disease
