    Limitations to Frechet's Metric Embedding Method

    Frechet's classical isometric embedding argument has evolved to become a major tool in the study of metric spaces. An important example of a Frechet embedding is Bourgain's embedding. The authors have recently shown that for every e>0 any n-point metric space contains a subset of size at least n^(1-e) which embeds into l_2 with distortion O(\log(2/e) /e). The embedding we used is non-Frechet, and the purpose of this note is to show that this is not coincidental. Specifically, for every e>0, we construct arbitrarily large n-point metric spaces, such that the distortion of any Frechet embedding into l_p on subsets of size at least n^{1/2 + e} is \Omega((\log n)^{1/p}).Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    Violator Spaces: Structure and Algorithms

    Sharir and Welzl introduced an abstract framework for optimization problems, called LP-type problems or also generalized linear programming problems, which proved useful in algorithm design. We define a new, and as we believe, simpler and more natural framework: violator spaces, which constitute a proper generalization of LP-type problems. We show that Clarkson's randomized algorithms for low-dimensional linear programming work in the context of violator spaces. For example, in this way we obtain the fastest known algorithm for the P-matrix generalized linear complementarity problem with a constant number of blocks. We also give two new characterizations of LP-type problems: they are equivalent to acyclic violator spaces, as well as to concrete LP-type problems (informally, the constraints in a concrete LP-type problem are subsets of a linearly ordered ground set, and the value of a set of constraints is the minimum of its intersection).Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, extended abstract was presented at ESA 2006; author spelling fixe

    Subsampling in Smoothed Range Spaces

    We consider smoothed versions of geometric range spaces, so an element of the ground set (e.g. a point) can be contained in a range with a non-binary value in [0,1][0,1]. Similar notions have been considered for kernels; we extend them to more general types of ranges. We then consider approximations of these range spaces through ε\varepsilon -nets and ε\varepsilon -samples (aka ε\varepsilon-approximations). We characterize when size bounds for ε\varepsilon -samples on kernels can be extended to these more general smoothed range spaces. We also describe new generalizations for ε\varepsilon -nets to these range spaces and show when results from binary range spaces can carry over to these smoothed ones.Comment: This is the full version of the paper which appeared in ALT 2015. 16 pages, 3 figures.     Prodsimplicial-Neighborly Polytopes

    Simultaneously generalizing both neighborly and neighborly cubical polytopes, we introduce PSN polytopes: their k-skeleton is combinatorially equivalent to that of a product of r simplices. We construct PSN polytopes by three different methods, the most versatile of which is an extension of Sanyal and Ziegler's "projecting deformed products" construction to products of arbitrary simple polytopes. For general r and k, the lowest dimension we achieve is 2k+r+1. Using topological obstructions similar to those introduced by Sanyal to bound the number of vertices of Minkowski sums, we show that this dimension is minimal if we additionally require that the PSN polytope is obtained as a projection of a polytope that is combinatorially equivalent to the product of r simplices, when the dimensions of these simplices are all large compared to k.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures; minor correction

    An efficient indexing scheme for multi-dimensional moving objects

    We consider the problem of indexing a set of objects moving in d-dimensional space along linear trajectories. A simple disk-based indexing scheme is proposed to efficiently answer queries of the form: report all objects that will pass between two given points within a specified time interval. Our scheme is based on mapping the objects to a dual space, where queries about moving objects translate into polyhedral queries concerning their speeds and initial locations. We then present a simple method for answering such polyhedral queries, based on partitioning the space into disjoint regions and using a B-tree to index the points in each region. By appropriately selecting the boundaries of each region, we can guarantee an average search time that almost matches a known lower bound for the problem. Specifically, for a fixed d, if the coordinates of a given set of N points are statistically independent, the proposed technique answers polyhedral queries, on the average, in O((N/B)1-1/d.(logB N)1/d + K/B) I/O\u27s using O(N/B) space, where B is the block size, and K is the number of reported points. Our approach is novel in that, while it provides a theoretical upper bound on the average query time, it avoids the use of complicated data structures, making it an effective candidate for practical applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003

    Approximating Tverberg Points in Linear Time for Any Fixed Dimension

    Let P be a d-dimensional n-point set. A Tverberg-partition of P is a partition of P into r sets P_1, ..., P_r such that the convex hulls conv(P_1), ..., conv(P_r) have non-empty intersection. A point in the intersection of the conv(P_i)'s is called a Tverberg point of depth r for P. A classic result by Tverberg implies that there always exists a Tverberg partition of size n/(d+1), but it is not known how to find such a partition in polynomial time. Therefore, approximate solutions are of interest. We describe a deterministic algorithm that finds a Tverberg partition of size n/4(d+1)^3 in time d^{O(log d)} n. This means that for every fixed dimension we can compute an approximate Tverberg point (and hence also an approximate centerpoint) in linear time. Our algorithm is obtained by combining a novel lifting approach with a recent result by Miller and Sheehy (2010).Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. A preliminary version appeared in SoCG 2012.     Unsplittable coverings in the plane

    A system of sets forms an {\em mm-fold covering} of a set XX if every point of XX belongs to at least mm of its members. A 11-fold covering is called a {\em covering}. The problem of splitting multiple coverings into several coverings was motivated by classical density estimates for {\em sphere packings} as well as by the {\em planar sensor cover problem}. It has been the prevailing conjecture for 35 years (settled in many special cases) that for every plane convex body CC, there exists a constant m=m(C)m=m(C) such that every mm-fold covering of the plane with translates of CC splits into 22 coverings. In the present paper, it is proved that this conjecture is false for the unit disk. The proof can be generalized to construct, for every mm, an unsplittable mm-fold covering of the plane with translates of any open convex body CC which has a smooth boundary with everywhere {\em positive curvature}. Somewhat surprisingly, {\em unbounded} open convex sets CC do not misbehave, they satisfy the conjecture: every 33-fold covering of any region of the plane by translates of such a set CC splits into two coverings. To establish this result, we prove a general coloring theorem for hypergraphs of a special type: {\em shift-chains}. We also show that there is a constant c>0c>0 such that, for any positive integer mm, every mm-fold covering of a region with unit disks splits into two coverings, provided that every point is covered by {\em at most} c2m/2c2^{m/2} sets

    Minimizing the stabbing number of matchings, trees, and triangulations

    The (axis-parallel) stabbing number of a given set of line segments is the maximum number of segments that can be intersected by any one (axis-parallel) line. This paper deals with finding perfect matchings, spanning trees, or triangulations of minimum stabbing number for a given set of points. The complexity of these problems has been a long-standing open question; in fact, it is one of the original 30 outstanding open problems in computational geometry on the list by Demaine, Mitchell, and O'Rourke. The answer we provide is negative for a number of minimum stabbing problems by showing them NP-hard by means of a general proof technique. It implies non-trivial lower bounds on the approximability. On the positive side we propose a cut-based integer programming formulation for minimizing the stabbing number of matchings and spanning trees. We obtain lower bounds (in polynomial time) from the corresponding linear programming relaxations, and show that an optimal fractional solution always contains an edge of at least constant weight. This result constitutes a crucial step towards a constant-factor approximation via an iterated rounding scheme. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our approach allows for actually solving problems with up to several hundred points optimally or near-optimally.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, Latex.     Local chromatic number of quadrangulations of surfaces

    The local chromatic number of a graph G, as introduced in [4], is the minimum integer k such that G admits a proper coloring (with an arbitrary number of colors) in which the neighborhood of each vertex uses less than k colors. In [17] a connection of the local chromatic number to topological properties of (a box complex of) the graph was established and in [18] it was shown that a topological condition implying the usual chromatic number being at least four has the stronger consequence that the local chromatic number is also at least four. As a consequence one obtains a generalization of the following theorem of Youngs [19]: If a quadrangulation of the projective plane is not bipartite it has chromatic number four. The generalization states that in this case the local chromatic number is also four. Both papers [1] and [13] generalize Youngs’ result to arbitrary non-orientable surfaces replacing the condition of the graph being not bipartite by a more technical condition of an odd quadrangulation. This paper investigates when these general results are true for the local chromatic number instead of the chromatic number. Surprisingly, we find out that (unlike in the case of the chromatic number) this depends on the genus of the surface. For the non-orientable surfaces of genus at most four, the local chromatic number of any odd quadrangulation is at least four, but this is not true for non-orientable surfaces of genus 5 or higher. We also prove that face subdivisions of odd quadrangulations and Fisk triangulations of arbitrary surfaces exhibit the same behavior for the local chromatic number as they do for the usual chromatic number
