    A Physics-based Investigation of Pt-salt Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Local Interconnects

    We investigate, by combining physical and electrical measurements together with an atomistic-to-circuit modeling approach, the conductance of doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their eligibility as possible candidate for next generation back-end-of-line (BEOL) interconnects. Ab-initio simulations predict a doping-related shift of the Fermi level, which reduces shell chirality variability and improves electrical conductance up to 90% by converting semiconducting shells to metallic. Circuit-level simulations predict up to 88% signal delay improvement with doped vs. pristine CNT. Electrical measurements of Pt-salt doped CNTs provide up to 50% of resistance reduction which is a milestone result for future CNT interconnect technology

    HI spectra and column densities toward HVC and IVC probes

    We show 21-cm line profiles in the direction of stars and extragalactic objects, lying projected on high- and intermediate-velocity clouds (HVCs and IVCs). About half of these are from new data obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope, about a quarter are extracted from the Leiden-Dwingeloo Survey (LDS) and the remaining quarter were observed with other single-dish telescopes. HI column densities were determined for each HVC/IVC. Wakker (2001) (Paper I) uses these in combination with optical and ultraviolet high-resolution measurements to derive abundances. Here, an analysis is given of the difference and ratio of N(HI) as observed with a 9 arcmin versus a 35 arcmin beam. For HVCs and IVCs the ratio N(HI-9 arcmin)/N(HI-35 arcmin) lies in the range 0.2-2.5. For low-velocity gas this ratio ranges from 0.75 to 1.3 (the observed ratio is 0.85-1.4, but it appears that the correction for stray radiation is slightly off). The smaller range for the low-velocity gas may be caused by confusion in the line of sight, so that a low ratio in one component can be compensated by a high ratio in another -- for 11 low-velocity clouds fit by one component the distribution of ratios has a larger dispersion. Comparison with higher angular resolution data is possible for sixteen sightlines. Eight sightlines with HI data at 1 arcmin-2 arcmin resolution show a range of 0.75-1.25 for N(HI-2 arcmin)/N(HI-9 arcmin), while in eight other sightlines N(HI-Ly-alpha)/N(HI-9 arcmin) ranges from 0.74 to 0.98.Comment: To appear in the "Astrophysical Journal Supplement"; 45 pages; degraded figures (astro-ph restriction) - ask for good version

    Airplane stability theory was born at the end of the XIX century and matured around 100 years ago, when airplanes were hardly controllable yet. The success and safety of flights in the pioneer years depended upon largely unknown stability and control characteristics. Understanding the modes of airplane motion has been of paramount importance for the development of aviation.     Salivary changes and dental caries as potential oral markers of autoimmune salivary gland dysfunction in primary Sjögren's syndrome

    BACKGROUND: the classification criteria for primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) include a number of oral components. In this study we evaluated if salivary flow and composition as well as dental caries are oral markers of disease severity in pSS. METHODS: in 20 patients fulfilling the American-European Consensus criteria for pSS and 20 age-matched healthy controls whole and parotid saliva flow rates and composition, measures of oral dryness, scores of decayed, missing and filled tooth surfaces (DMFS), periodontal indices, oral hygiene, and dietary habits were examined. RESULTS: in pSS, salivary flow rates, pH, and buffer capacities were lower, and DMFS, salivary sodium and chloride concentrations higher than in the healthy controls. DMFS also correlated inversely to salivary flow rates and positively to oral dryness. Apart from slightly increased gingival index, and more frequent dental visits in pSS, the periodontal condition, oral hygiene or sugar intake did not differ between these two groups. In pSS, findings were correlated to labial salivary gland focus score (FS) and presence of serum-autoantibodies to SSA/SSB (AB). The patients having both presence of AB and the highest FS (>2) also had the highest salivary sodium and chloride concentrations, the lowest salivary phosphate concentrations, lowest salivary flow rates, and highest DMFS compared to those with normal salivary concentrations of sodium and chloride at a given flow rate. CONCLUSION: the salivary changes observed in some pSS patients reflect impaired ductal salt reabsorption, but unaffected acinar transport mechanisms, despite low salivary secretion. Our results suggest that changes in salivary flow and composition as well as dental caries may serve as potential markers of the extent of autoimmune-mediated salivary gland dysfunction in pSS. The study also indicates that the ductal epithelium is functionally affected in some pSS patients, which calls for future pathophysiological studies on the mechanisms underlying this impaired salt reabsorption

    Age and Diet Affect Gene Expression Profile in Canine Skeletal Muscle

    We evaluated gene transcription in canine skeletal muscle (biceps femoris) using microarray analysis to identify effects of age and diet on gene expression. Twelve female beagles were used (six 1-year olds and six 12-year olds) and they were fed one of two experimental diets for 12 months. One diet contained primarily plant-based protein sources (PPB), whereas the second diet contained primarily animal-based protein sources (APB). Affymetrix GeneChip Canine Genome Arrays were used to hybridize extracted RNA. Age had the greatest effect on gene transcription (262 differentially expressed genes), whereas the effect of diet was relatively small (22 differentially expressed genes). Effects of age (regardless of diet) were most notable on genes related to metabolism, cell cycle and cell development, and transcription function. All these genes were predominantly down-regulated in geriatric dogs. Age-affected genes that were differentially expressed on only one of two diets were primarily noted in the PPB diet group (144/165 genes). Again, genes related to cell cycle (22/35) and metabolism (15/19) had predominantly decreased transcription in geriatric dogs, but 6/8 genes related to muscle development had increased expression. Effects of diet on muscle gene expression were mostly noted in geriatric dogs, but no consistent patterns in transcription were observed. The insight these data provide into gene expression profiles of canine skeletal muscle as affected by age, could serve as a foundation for future research pertaining to age-related muscle diseases
