Phasing diffuse scattering. Application of the SIR2002 algorithm to the non-crystallographic phase problem
A new phasing algorithm has been used to determine the phases of diffuse
elastic X-ray scattering from a non-periodic array of gold balls of 50 nm
diameter. Two-dimensional real-space images, showing the charge-density
distribution of the balls, have been reconstructed at 50 nm resolution from
transmission diffraction patterns recorded at 550 eV energy. The reconstructed
image fits well with scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of the same
sample. The algorithm, which uses only the density modification portion of the
SIR2002 program, is compared with the results obtained via the
Gerchberg-Saxton-Fienup HIO algorithm. In this way the relationship between
density modification in crystallography and the HiO algorithm used in signal
and image processing is elucidated.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figure
Lung penetration, bronchopulmonary pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic profile and safety of 3 g of ceftolozane/tazobactam administered to ventilated, critically ill patients with pneumonia
Objectives: Ceftolozane/tazobactam is approved for hospital-acquired/ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia at double the dose (i.e. 2 g/1 g) recommended for other indications. We evaluated the bronchopulmonary pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic profile of this 3 g ceftolozane/tazobactam regimen in ventilated pneumonia patients.
Methods: This was an open-label, multicentre, Phase 1 trial (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02387372). Mechanically ventilated patients with proven/suspected pneumonia received four to six doses of 3 g of ceftolozane/tazobactam (adjusted for renal function) q8h. Serial plasma samples were collected after the first and last doses. One bronchoalveolar lavage sample per patient was collected at 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 h after the last dose and epithelial lining fluid (ELF) drug concentrations were determined. Pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated by noncompartmental analysis and pharmacodynamic analyses were conducted to graphically evaluate achievement of target exposures (plasma and ELF ceftolozane concentrations >4 mg/L and tazobactam concentrations >1 mg/L; target in plasma: similar to 30% and similar to 20% of the dosing interval, respectively).
Results: Twenty-six patients received four to six doses of study drug; 22 were included in the ELF analyses. Ceftolozane and tazobactam T-max (6 and 2 h, respectively) were delayed in ELF compared with plasma (1h). Lung penetration, expressed as the ratio of mean drug exposure (AUC) in ELF to plasma, was 50% (ceftolozane) and 62% (tazobactam). Mean ceftolozane and tazobactam ELF
concentrations remained >4 mg/L and >1mg/L, respectively, for 100% of the dosing interval. Therewere no deaths or adverse event-related study discontinuations. Conclusions: In ventilated pneumonia patients, 3 g of ceftolozane/tazobactam q8h yielded ELF exposures considered adequate to cover ceftolozane/tazobactam-susceptible respiratory pathogens
Impediments to mixing classical and quantum dynamics
The dynamics of systems composed of a classical sector plus a quantum sector
is studied. We show that, even in the simplest cases, (i) the existence of a
consistent canonical description for such mixed systems is incompatible with
very basic requirements related to the time evolution of the two sectors when
they are decoupled. (ii) The classical sector cannot inherit quantum
fluctuations from the quantum sector. And, (iii) a coupling among the two
sectors is incompatible with the requirement of physical positivity of the
theory, i.e., there would be positive observables with a non positive

A Quantum-Classical Brackets from p-Mechanics
We provide an answer to the long standing problem of mixing quantum and
classical dynamics within a single formalism. The construction is based on
p-mechanical derivation (quant-ph/0212101, quant-ph/0304023) of quantum and
classical dynamics from the representation theory of the Heisenberg group. To
achieve a quantum-classical mixing we take the product of two copies of the
Heisenberg group which represent two different Planck's constants. In
comparison with earlier guesses our answer contains an extra term of analytical
nature, which was not obtained before in purely algebraic setup.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation during in vitro and in vivo digestion of raw and cooked broccoli (brassica oleracea var. Italica)
Broccoli is rich in glucosinolates, which can be converted upon chewing and processing into Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) ligands. Activation of AhR plays an important role in overall gut homeostasis but the role of broccoli processing on the generation of AhR ligands is still largely unknown. In this study, the effects of temperature, cooking method (steaming versus boiling), gastric pH and further digestion of broccoli on AhR activation were investigated in vitro and in ileostomy subjects. For the in vitro study, raw, steamed (t = 3 min and t = 6 min) and boiled (t = 3 min and t = 6 min) broccoli were digested in vitro with different gastric pH. In the in vivo ileostomy study, 8 subjects received a broccoli soup or a broccoli soup plus an exogenous myrosinase source. AhR activation was measured in both in vitro and in vivo samples by using HepG2-Lucia™ AhR reporter cells. Cooking broccoli reduced the AhR activation measured after gastric digestion in vitro, but no effect of gastric pH was found. Indole AhR ligands were not detected or detected at very low levels both after intestinal in vitro digestion and in the ileostomy patient samples, which resulted in no AhR activation. This suggests that the evaluation of the relevance of glucosinolates for AhR modulation in the gut cannot prescind from the way broccoli is processed, and that broccoli consumption does not necessarily produce substantial amounts of AhR ligands in the large intestine
Stimulation of glucose uptake by insulin-like growth factor II in human muscle is not mediated by the insulin-like growth factor II/mannose 6-phosphate receptor.
Although the growth-promoting effects of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) have been intensively studied, the acute actions of this hormone on glucose metabolism have been less well evaluated, especially in skeletal muscle ofhumans. We and other groups have shown that IGFs reduce glycaemic levels in humans and stimulate glucose uptake in rat muscle. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of IGF-II on glucose transport in muscle of normal and obese patients with and without non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), as well as to identify the receptor responsible for this action. 2- Deoxyglucose transport was determined in vitro using a muscle- fibre strip preparation. IGF-II binding and stimulation of glucose transport by IGF-II were investigated in biopsy material of rectus abdominus muscle taken from lean and obese patients and obese patients with NIDDM at the time of surgery. In the lean group, IGF-II (100 nM) stimulated glucose transport 2.1-fold, which was slightly less than stimulation by insulin (2.8-fold) at the same concentration. Binding of IGF-II was approx. 25 % of that of insulin at 1 nM concentrations of both hormones. Obesity with or without NIDDM significantly reduced IGF-II-stimulated glucose uptake compared with the lean group. In order to explore which receptor mediated the IGF-II effect, we compared glucose uptake induced by IGF-II and two IGF-II analogues: [Leu27]IGF-II, with high affinity for the IGF-II/Man 6-P receptor but markedly reduced affinity for the IGF-I and insulin receptors, and [Arg54,Arg55]IGF-II, with high affinity for the IGF-I and insulin receptors but no affinity for the IGF-II/Man 6-P receptor. The potency of [Arg54,Arg55]IGF-II was similar to that of IGF- II, whereas [Leu27]IGF-II had a very diminished effect. Results show that IGF-II is capable of stimulating muscle glucose uptake in lean but not in obese subjects and this effect seems not to be mediated via an IGF-II/Man 6-P receptor. Dispersion Relations and Rescattering Effects in B Nonleptonic Decays
Recently, the final state strong interactions in nonleptonic B decays were
investigated in a formalism based on hadronic unitarity and dispersion
relations in terms of the off-shell mass squared of the meson. We consider
an heuristic derivation of the dispersion relations in the mass variables using
the reduction LSZ formalism and find a discrepancy between the spectral
function and the dispersive variable used in the recent works. The part of the
unitarity sum which describes final state interactions is shown to appear as
spectral function in a dispersion relation based on the analytic continuation
in the mass squared of one final particles. As an application, by combining
this formalism with Regge theory and SU(3) flavour symmetry we obtain
constraints on the tree and the penguin amplitudes of the decay .Comment: 17 pages, Latex, 2 figure
Characterization of Lactococcus strains isolated from artisanal Oaxaca cheese
Lactococci strains obtained from raw-milk Oaxaca cheese through its production process in two factories from the Tulancingo Valley, Mexico, were isolated and characterized. A total of 120 colonies were selected from the growth in M17 and MRS agars. Twenty were identified as lactococci strains, all Lactococcus lactis, and were characterized by molecular and phenotypic methods including carbohydrate use, enzymatic profile, acidifying capacity, and antibiotic and phage resistance. High phenotypic diversity was observed and confirmed among the Lactococcus lactis strains by rep-PCR fingerprints. Fifty percent of the strains were resistant to streptomycin and 35% to erythromycin. Nine isolates were considered as fast acidifying strains. The predominant volatile compounds produced were 3-methylbutanol, 3-methylbutanal and butane-2,3-dione. A selection of strains isolated in this study has shown satisfactory characteristics to be used as potential starters for the industrial production of Oaxaca cheese.Peer reviewe
Nonquantum Gravity
One of the great challenges for 21st century physics is to quantize gravity
and generate a theory that will unify gravity with the other three fundamental
forces of nature. This paper takes the (heretical) point of view that gravity
may be an inherently classical, i.e., nonquantum, phenomenon and investigates
the experimental consequences of such a model. At present there is no
experimental evidence of the quantum nature of gravity and the liklihood of
definitive tests in the future is not at all certain. If gravity is, indeed, a
nonquantum phenomenon, then it is suggested that evidence will most likely
