This interview is one of a series conducted concerning the Marshall University Society of Yeager Scholars. At the time of the interview, Judy Thomas was Director of Foundations for Ashland Oil, Inc. She discusses: her family and personal history; entering college; her employment at Ashland Oil; individuals such as Dr. Dale Nitzschke, Bob McKown, Bob Bell, Keith Scott, Joe Hunnicutt, Carolyn Hunter, & Chuck Yeager; the Ashland Oil Foundation (which she become president of after getting her degree and which supported Marshall University and the University of Kentucky); Ashland Oil\u27s special teacher award; their support of the Society of Yeager Scholars and the formation of the Society; and other topics.https://mds.marshall.edu/oral_history/1327/thumbnail.jp

    Dreaming Consciousness Explored

    Get PDF
OneiromanticsTM-the symbolic language of dreams-involves a process of decoding and classifying dream imagery appearing in an entangled state.  Oneiromantics, generated in a dream series, enfolded a body of scientific data which exceeded the dreamer's waking knowledge. The series of dreams spanning over two decades of study and translation were based on Intuitive Logic, the author's practice for unifying conceptual representations of mind and matter. Formed within the subconscious structure of visual associative recognition memory, the practice of Intuitive Logic yields a web of interrelated associations germane to aspects of David Bohm's Implicate Order. From the perspective of Bohm's quantum interconnectedness, this study consists of synergistic aspects of dreams and waking relevant to constructing the "whole." Bohm's implicate order of wholeness, illustrated in this study as a Collective Unconscious network, includes geological insights and Claudius Galen's pneumatic theory on visual perception. The hard problem of consciousness emerges, concluding in Complex Systems that integrate mental and physical functions within dreaming and waking consciousness. The following study explores the nature of consciousness as derived from the application of intuitive logic-which I suggest is an aspect of quantum cognition. The quantum implications of multiple symbols in the overall dream series transcended this author's waking knowledge. The precision of certain images and their correlation to actual scientifically recorded events may serve as a catalyst to experts in those areas

Consciousness Without Constraint: Open String Theory - One Loose End

    Get PDF
Utilizing string and chaos theory as a template, dreaming-waking consciousness opens to the collective unconscious where dreams access universal information in a metaphorical black hole of the psyche. This experiential study of crossover theories, scientific disciplines, and unified consciousness illustrates how insights unconstrained by preconceptions are developed at the most basic levels of awareness. Physics overlaps with concepts of immortality and infinity. Insights emerge in a fluid, unconstrained dimension of consciousness. An Alice in Wonderland allegory analogizes the process of discovering truths from other planes. Alice's curiosity impels her to decode scientific metaphors and clues, spinning and unfolding them into a quantum realm of branes and brains. As an investigative tool, vignettes illustrate Visual Associative Recognition Memory based on entangled quantum consciousness. In this dream-science narrative, logic and insight combine to pursue the proverbial "one loose end," while surface research produces applications that may help trigger insights relevant to theories of string and consciousness

An Entangled Dream Series: Fragmentation, Wholeness and the Collective Unconscious

    Get PDF
Based on an experiential dream series this consciousness study shapes a theory that the fragmentary nature of dreams seeks wholeness deriving from the Collective Unconscious. As dreams evolve from a microscopic-personal worldview to a macroscopic-transpersonal dimension, concern for survival of self is augmented with concern for survival of the species. Entangled dream imagery provides cues to quantum functions actualized through the tutelage of departed scientific luminaries. The intentionality, specificity, and information input experienced in the communications imply that the collective unconscious and quantum cognition are an integrated structure revealing an underlying methodology

Kindergarten Admission Procedures in Independent Schools with Suggested Guidelines

    Get PDF
The purposes of this research were to (a) define the procedures used in evaluating children for admission to independent school kindergartens, (b) to investigate selected variables and ascertain their significance in the admissions process and, (c) to formulate guidelines for assessing applicants to independent school kindergartens. Subjects were 119 randomly selected independent school admissions officers and 11 professors in universities in the United States. Data were gathered from the subjects through a 25 item survey instrument designed by the researcher. The chi-square statistical analysis procedure was used to measure the significance of differences between groups on the research questions. The Friedman test was utilized to test the independence of ranked criteria. The .05 level of significance was used to determine whether the observed differences were significant. Variables investigated included the training and experience of directors, admissions officers, teachers and others; the amount of time spent in interviewing, observing and testing applicants; and the school\u27s selection ratio, reenrollment rate and level of satisfaction with procedures. Subjects ranked qualities perceived as important in evaluating applicants to independent school kindergartens. The data analysis revealed: 1. Admissions officers with less than six years experience spent the least amount of time observing applicants and were located in schools with the lowest selection ratios. 2. Teachers and all persons who interviewed applicants less than 30 minutes were satisfied with their procedures or satisfied but felt they could improve procedures. Increased time spent in interviews did not increase satisfaction with procedures. 3. The rank ordering of qualities sought in applicants indicated significant differences between the New England area and the Far West. The qualities perceived as most important in the New England region were related to behavior of applicants; the qualities most highly ranked in the Far west were cognitive. The Far West agreed most closely with the rankings of university professors. This finding has implications for independent school inservice training and admissions procedures. It was the conclusion of the researcher that admissions procedures in independent schools studies were similar in nature, but with regional differences in emphasis. Guidelines for admissions based on the research were developed and presented

Promoting Team-Based Exercise Among African American Breast Cancer Survivors

    Get PDF
Physical activity benefits the health and well-being of breast cancer survivors (BCS). Yet, many African American survivors do not routinely exercise and have increased risk of poor outcomes. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to identify motivational factors compelling African American BCS to participate in a 14-week team walking program and to intend to continue exercise after the intervention concluded. Focus groups were held with participants (n = 12) before and after training. Content analysis discovered themes before the intervention: Not wanting to go at it alone, exercise not a life or treatment priority, cancer treatment affected activity, advocates to exercise, and can exercise really help? Four themes postintervention themes included: In the same boat, changed mind-set, improved weight and activity, and overcoming barriers. Physical data verified improvements. Results suggest that a team-based exercise training program may assist in overcoming a sedentary behavior tendency and subsequently improve health among survivors
