    Operator *-correspondences in analysis and geometry

    An operator *-algebra is a non-selfadjoint operator algebra with completely isometric involution. We show that any operator *-algebra admits a faithful representation on a Hilbert space in such a way that the involution coincides with the operator adjoint up to conjugation by a symmetry. We introduce operator *-correspondences as a general class of inner product modules over operator *-algebras and prove a similar representation theorem for them. From this we derive the existence of linking operator *-algebras for operator *-correspondences. We illustrate the relevance of this class of inner product modules by providing numerous examples arising from noncommutative geometry.Comment: 31 pages.     Measurements of polarized photo-pion production on longitudinally polarized HD and Implications for Convergence of the GDH Integral

    We report new measurements of inclusive pion production from frozen-spin HD for polarized photon beams covering the Delta(1232) resonance. These provide data simultaneously on both H and D with nearly complete angular distributions of the spin-difference cross sections entering the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. Recent results from Mainz and Bonn exceed the GDH prediction for the proton by 22 microbarns, suggesting as yet unmeasured high-energy components. Our pi0 data reveal a different angular dependence than assumed in Mainz analyses and integrate to a value that is 18 microbarns lower, suggesting a more rapid convergence. Our results for deuterium are somewhat lower than published data, considerably more precise and generally lower than available calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Radiative Muon Capture on Hydrogen and the Induced Pseudoscalar Coupling

    The first measurement of the elementary process μpνμnγ\mu^- p \rightarrow \nu_{\mu} n \gamma is reported. A photon pair spectrometer was used to measure the partial branching ratio (2.10±0.22)×1082.10 \pm 0.22) \times 10^{-8} for photons of k > 60 MeV. The value of the weak pseudoscalar coupling constant determined from the partial branching ratio is gp(q2=0.88mμ2)=(9.8±0.7±0.3)ga(0)g_p(q^{2}=-0.88m_{\mu}^2) = (9.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.3) \cdot g_a(0), where the first error is the quadrature sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties and the second error is due to the uncertainty in λop\lambda_{op}, the decay rate of the ortho to para pμpp \mu p molecule. This value of g_p is \sim1.5 times the prediction of PCAC and pion-pole dominance.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX type, 3 figures (encapsulated postscript), submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Multiplicativity of completely bounded p-norms implies a new additivity result

    We prove additivity of the minimal conditional entropy associated with a quantum channel Phi, represented by a completely positive (CP), trace-preserving map, when the infimum of S(gamma_{12}) - S(gamma_1) is restricted to states of the form gamma_{12} = (I \ot Phi)(| psi >< psi |). We show that this follows from multiplicativity of the completely bounded norm of Phi considered as a map from L_1 -> L_p for L_p spaces defined by the Schatten p-norm on matrices; we also give an independent proof based on entropy inequalities. Several related multiplicativity results are discussed and proved. In particular, we show that both the usual L_1 -> L_p norm of a CP map and the corresponding completely bounded norm are achieved for positive semi-definite matrices.     Study of a class of non-polynomial oscillator potentials

    We develop a variational method to obtain accurate bounds for the eigenenergies of H = -Delta + V in arbitrary dimensions N>1, where V(r) is the nonpolynomial oscillator potential V(r) = r^2 + lambda r^2/(1+gr^2), lambda in (-infinity,\infinity), g>0. The variational bounds are compared with results previously obtained in the literature. An infinite set of exact solutions is also obtained and used as a source of comparison eigenvalues.Comment: 16 page

    Eradication of poliomyelitis in South Africa

    An international campaign under the leadership of the World Health Organisation is underway to eradicate polio from the world by the year 2000. South Africa may already be free of polio. However, to ensure eradication we need to move from a polio control programme to a polio eradication programme. This necessitates the institution of a surveillance programme for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and improvement of the delivery of polio vaccine. All children with AFP (including those with suspected GuillainBarre syndrome) should be investigated with stool culture to exclude polio. Primary care services need strengthening so that oral polio vaccine coverage greater than 90% is achieved in all regions by all authorities. Outbreak response activities need to be developed. Consideration needs to be given to national immunisation days and mopping-up activities
