A Pulsed Synchrotron for Muon Acceleration at a Neutrino Factory
A 4600 Hz pulsed synchrotron is considered as a means of accelerating cool
muons with superconducting RF cavities from 4 to 20 GeV/c for a neutrino
factory. Eddy current losses are held to less than a megawatt by the low
machine duty cycle plus 100 micron thick grain oriented silicon steel
laminations and 250 micron diameter copper wires. Combined function magnets
with 20 T/m gradients alternating within single magnets form the lattice. Muon

Proposal for an IMLS Collection Registry and Metadata Repository
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign proposes to design, implement, and research a collection-level registry and item-level metadata repository service that will aggregate information about digital collections and items of digital content created using funds from Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grants. This work will be a collaboration by the University Library and the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. All extant digital collections initiated or augmented under IMLS aegis from 1998 through September 30, 2005 will be included in the proposed collection registry. Item-level metadata will be harvested from collections making such content available using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI PMH). As part of this work, project personnel, in cooperation with IMLS staff and grantees, will define and document appropriate metadata schemas, help create and maintain collection-level metadata records, assist in implementing OAI compliant metadata provider services for dissemination of item-level metadata records, and research potential benefits and issues associated with these activities. The immediate outcomes of this work will be the practical demonstration of technologies that have the potential to enhance the visibility of IMLS funded online exhibits and digital library collections and improve discoverability of items contained in these resources. Experience gained and research conducted during this project will make clearer both the costs and the potential benefits associated with such services. Metadata provider and harvesting service implementations will be appropriately instrumented (e.g., customized anonymous transaction logs, online questionnaires for targeted user groups, performance monitors). At the conclusion of this project we will submit a final report that discusses tasks performed and lessons learned, presents business plans for sustaining registry and repository services, enumerates and summarizes potential benefits of these services, and makes recommendations regarding future implementations of these and related intermediary and end user interoperability services by IMLS projects.unpublishednot peer reviewe
Decoupling a Cooper-pair box to enhance the lifetime to 0.2 ms
We present a circuit QED experiment in which a separate transmission line is
used to address a quasi-lumped element superconducting microwave resonator
which is in turn coupled to an Al/AlO/Al Cooper-pair box (CPB) charge
qubit. In our measurements we find a strong correlation between the measured
lifetime of the CPB and the coupling between the qubit and the transmission
line. By monitoring perturbations of the resonator's 5.44 GHz resonant
frequency, we have measured the spectrum, lifetime (), Rabi, and Ramsey
oscillations of the CPB at the charge degeneracy point while the CPB was
detuned by up to 2.5 GHz . We find a maximum lifetime of the CPB was s for to 4.5 GHz. Our measured 's are consistent with
loss due to coupling to the transmission line, spurious microwave circuit
resonances, and a background decay rate on the order of
s of unknown origin, implying that the loss tangent in the AlO
junction barrier must be less than about at 4.5 GHz, about 4
orders of magnitude less than reported in larger area Al/AlO/Al tunnel
junctions
Can the palatability of healthy, satiety-promoting foods increase with repeated exposure during weight loss?
Repeated exposure to sugary, fatty, and salty foods often enhances their appeal. However, it is unknown if exposure influences learned palatability of foods typically promoted as part of a healthy diet. We tested whether the palatability of pulse containing foods provided during a weight loss intervention which were particularly high in fiber and low in energy density would increase with repeated exposure. At weeks 0, 3, and 6, participants (n = 42; body mass index (BMI) 31.2 ± 4.3 kg/m²) were given a test battery of 28 foods, approximately half which had been provided as part of the intervention, while the remaining half were not foods provided as part of the intervention. In addition, about half of each of the foods (provided as part or not provided as part of the intervention) contained pulses. Participants rated the taste, appearance, odor, and texture pleasantness of each food, and an overall flavor pleasantness score was calculated as the mean of these four scores. Linear mixed model analyses showed an exposure type by week interaction effect for taste, texture and overall flavor pleasantness indicating statistically significant increases in ratings of provided foods in taste and texture from weeks 0 to 3 and 0 to 6, and overall flavor from weeks 0 to 6. Repeated exposure to these foods, whether they contained pulses or not, resulted in a ~4% increase in pleasantness ratings. Interdisciplinary (retail) research: The business of geography and the geography of business
NoAt the 2005 British Academy of Management conference several well-known economic
geographers, including Neil Wrigley, Gordon Clark, and Susan Christopherson, called
for management researchers to engage with economic geographers on interrelated
geographical and managerial issues in the study of (retail) firms. In this commentary
we reflect upon the present geography -management interface.We begin by considering
the term `interdisciplinary research' and its relationship to any management - geography interface. This is followed by a context-specific discussion of international retailing and the role of research on the retail transnational corporation (TNC) in developing an interdisciplinary agenda. Precision metering of microliter volumes of biological fluids in micro-gravity
Concepts were demonstrated and investigated for transferring accurately known and reproducible microliter volumes of biological fluids from sample container onto dry chemistry slides in microgravity environment. Specific liquid transfer tip designs were compared. Information was obtained for design of a liquid sample handling system to enable clinical chemical analysis in microgravity. Disposable pipet tips and pipet devices that were designed to transfer microliter volumes of biological fluid from a (test tube) sample container in 1-G environment were used during microgravity periods of parabolic trajectories of the KC-135 aircraft. The transfer process was recorded using charge coupled device camera and video cassette equipment. Metering behavior of water, a synthetic aqueous protein solution, and anticoagulated human blood was compared. Electronic Structures of Group 9 Metallocorroles with Axial Ammines
The electronic structures of metallocorroles (tpfc)M(NH_3)_2 and (tfc)M(NH_3)_2 (tpfc is the trianion of 5,10,15-(tris)pentafluorophenylcorrole, tfc is the trianion of 5,10,15-trifluorocorrole, and M = Co, Rh, Ir) have been computed using first principles quantum mechanics [B3LYP flavor of Density Functional Theory (DFT) with Poisson−Boltzmann continuum solvation]. The geometry was optimized for both the neutral systems (formal M^(III) oxidation state) and the one-electron oxidized systems (formally M^(IV)). As expected, the M^(III) systems have a closed shell d^6 configuration; for all three metals, the one-electron oxidation was calculated to occur from a ligand-based orbital (highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of B_1 symmetry). The ground state of the formal M^(IV) system has M^(III)-Cπ character, indicating that the metal remains d^6, with the hole in the corrole π system. As a result the calculated M^(IV/III) reduction potentials are quite similar (0.64, 0.67, and 0.56 V vs SCE for M = Ir, Rh and Co, respectively), whereas the differences would have been large for purely metal-based oxidations. Vertically excited states with substantial metal character are well separated from the ground state in one-electron-oxidized cobalt (0.27 eV) and rhodium (0.24 eV) corroles, but become closer in energy in the iridium (0.15 eV) analogues. The exact splittings depend on the chosen functional and basis set combination and vary by ~0.1 eV
Close encounters involving RAVE stars beyond the 47 Tucanae tidal radius
The most accurate 6D phase-space information from the Radial Velocity
Experiment (RAVE) was used to integrate the orbits of 105 stars around the
galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae, to look for close encounters between them
in the past, with a minimum distance approach less than the cluster tidal
radius. The stars are currently over the distance range 3.0 kpc d 5.5
kpc. Using the uncertainties in the current position and velocity vector for
both, star and cluster, 105 pairs of star-cluster orbits were generated in a
Monte Carlo numerical scheme, integrated over 2 Gyr and considering an
axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric Milky-Way-like Galactic potential,
respectively. In this scheme, we identified 20 potential cluster members that
had close encounters with the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, all of which have a
relative velocity distribution (V) less than 200 km s at the
minimum distance approach. Among these potential members, 9 had close
encounters with the cluster with velocities less than the escape velocity of 47
Tucanae, therefore a scenario of tidal stripping seems likely. These stars have
been classified with a 93\% confidence level, leading to the identification of
extratidal cluster stars. For the other 11 stars, V exceeds the escape
velocity of the cluster, therefore they were likely ejected or are unassociated
