Memory based on abstraction for dynamic fitness functions

    Get PDF
Copyright @ Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2008.This paper proposes a memory scheme based on abstraction for evolutionary algorithms to address dynamic optimization problems. In this memory scheme, the memory does not store good solutions as themselves but as their abstraction, i.e., their approximate location in the search space. When the environment changes, the stored abstraction information is extracted to generate new individuals into the population. Experiments are carried out to validate the abstraction based memory scheme. The results show the efficiency of the abstraction based memory scheme for evolutionary algorithms in dynamic environments. This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant No. EP/E060722/1

Adaptive intelligence applied to numerical optimisation

    Get PDF
The article presents modification strategies theoretical comparison and experimental results achieved by adaptive heuristics applied to numerical optimisation of several non-constraint test functions. The aims of the study are to identify and compare how adaptive search heuristics behave within heterogeneous search space without retuning of the search parameters. The achieved results are summarised and analysed, which could be used for comparison to other methods and further investigation

On replacement strategies in steady state evolutionary algorithms

    Get PDF
Steady State models of Evolutionary Algorithms are widely used, yet surprisingly little attention has been paid to the effects arising from different replacement strategies. This paper explores the use of mathematical models to characterise the selection pressures arising in a selection-only environment. The first part brings together models for the behaviour of seven different replacement mechanisms and provides expressions for various proposed indicators of Evolutionary Algorithm behaviour. Some of these have been derived elsewhere, and are included for completeness, but the majority are new to this paper. These theoretical indicators are used to compare the behaviour of the different strategies. The second part of this paper examines the practical relevance of these indicators as predictors for algorithms' relative performance in terms of optimisation time and reliability. It is not the intention of this paper to come up with a "one size fits all" recommendation for choice of replacement strategy. Although some strategies may have little to recommend them, the relative ranking of others is shown to depend on the intended use of the algorithm to be implemented, as reflected in the choice of performance metrics. © 2007 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Stand type affects fluxes of volatile organic compounds from the forest floor in hemiboreal and boreal climates

The forest floor is a significant contributor to the stand-scale fluxes of biogenic volatile organic compounds. In this study, the effect of tree species (Scots pine vs. Norway spruce) on forest floor fluxes of volatile organic compounds (VOC) was compared in boreal and hemiboreal climates.Peer reviewe

Onset of photosynthesis in spring speeds up monoterpene synthesis and leads to emission bursts

Emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by boreal evergreen trees have strong seasonality, with low emission rates during photosynthetically inactive winter and increasing rates towards summer. Yet, the regulation of this seasonality remains unclear. We measured in situ monoterpene emissions from Scots pine shoots during several spring periods and analysed their dynamics in connection with the spring recovery of photosynthesis. We found high emission peaks caused by enhanced monoterpene synthesis consistently during every spring period (monoterpene emission bursts, MEB). The timing of the MEBs varied relatively little between the spring periods. The timing of the MEBs showed good agreement with the photosynthetic spring recovery, which was studied with simultaneous measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence, CO2 exchange and a simple, temperature history-based proxy for state of photosynthetic acclimation, S. We conclude that the MEBs were related to the early stages of photosynthetic recovery, when the efficiency of photosynthetic carbon reactions is still low whereas the light harvesting machinery actively absorbs light energy. This suggests that the MEBs may serve a protective functional role for the foliage during this critical transitory state and that these high emission peaks may contribute to atmospheric chemistry in the boreal forest in springtime. Emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by boreal evergreen trees have strong seasonality. We measured high emission peaks from Scots pine shoots caused by enhanced monoterpene synthesis taking place simultaneously with the photosynthetic spring recovery. We conclude that the increased emissions were related to the photosynthetic recovery, when the efficiency of photosynthetic carbon reactions is low whereas the light harvesting machinery actively absorbs light energy. Increased emissions may serve a protective functional role for the foliage during the transitory state, and these high emission peaks may contribute to atmospheric chemistry in the boreal forest in springtime.Peer reviewe

Coherence features of the spin-aligned neutron-proton pair coupling scheme

The seniority scheme has been shown to be extremely useful for the classification of nuclear states in semi-magic nuclei. The neutron-proton (npnp) correlation breaks the seniority symmetry in a major way. As a result, the corresponding wave function is a mixture of many components with different seniority quantum numbers. In this contribution we show that the npnp interaction may favor a new kind of coupling in N=ZN=Z nuclei, i.e., the so-called isoscalar spin-aligned npnp pair mode. Shell model calculations reveal that the ground and low-lying yrast states of the N=ZN = Z nuclei 92^{92}Pd and 96^{96}Cd may mainly be built upon such spin-aligned npnp pairs each carrying the maximum angular momentum J=9J = 9 allowed by the shell 0g9/20g_{9/2} which is dominant in this nuclear region.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figues, Proceedings of the Nordic Conference on Nuclear Physics 2011. Properties of Nucleon Resonances by means of a Genetic Algorithm

    Get PDF
We present an optimization scheme that employs a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to determine the properties of low-lying nucleon excitations within a realistic photo-pion production model based upon an effective Lagrangian. We show that with this modern optimization technique it is possible to reliably assess the parameters of the resonances and the associated error bars as well as to identify weaknesses in the models. To illustrate the problems the optimization process may encounter, we provide results obtained for the nucleon resonances Δ\Delta(1230) and Δ\Delta(1700). The former can be easily isolated and thus has been studied in depth, while the latter is not as well known experimentally.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. Minor correction
