Ship resistance in ice floe covered waters

    Get PDF
The developmemt of new analytical and numerical methods for the calculation of ship resistance in broken, pack icef or ice floe covered waters, as well as full scale and model testing, has been addressed in this dissertation. -- In this study three methods for the calculation of ship resistance are presented. The first analytical formulation of ship resistance in ice fragments (The Micro Model) is based on the calculation of energy loss due to an impact between an advancing ship and an ice floe. Based on The Kinetic Theory of Gases (molecule collision and pressure) the number of possible ice floes colliding with the ship, in a given time, was estimated and consequently total ship energy loss and ship resistance was determined. The second approach for the calculation of ship resistance due to ice floes (The Macro Model) was formulated and developed based on the analysis of water drag of displaced ice floes. The Macro Model is based on the prediction of the total forces acting on the ship as a result of the displacement of a large number of ice floes out of the ship's path. -- Both analytical models have been formulated to account for both the ship characteristics and ice cover properties. Numerical calculations of ship resistance for existing ship hull forms have been performed and presented, in this study, using the newly developed models. -- A numerical calculation method based on the distinct element method has been introduced in this dissertation as a new approach for the calculation of ship resistance in ice floe or pack ice. -- Besides the analytical and the numerical approaches developed, a number of model test experiments were conducted in simulated broken ice cover to measure ship resistance increase due to ice fragments. -- A Full-Scale field measurement program was beyond the scope of this study. However, results from existing full scale tests, available in the literature, have been collected, analysed and presented in this study. -- Results from the new analytical and numerical models, model test experiments, and full scale field measurements, have been presented in this study to verify the validity of the different approaches. -- This study has developed new methods or tools for calculating the ship resistance in broken ice. This study has shown that it is possible to predict with reasonable accuracy, the magnitude of ship resistance in a given ice floe or pack ice cover

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the implementation of human resource management (HRM)practices that facilitate innovation in the public sector in a developing country.Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative method was engaged whereby a semi-structured interviewwas conducted to get the responses of two groups of employees which are top management and executive intwo types of public organizations which are awarded and non-awarded. The collected data was later analyzedthematically.Findings – The results show that there are differences and similarities among the public agencies in terms oftheir implementation of HRM practices that facilitate innovation. Apparently, the awarded public agencies dofollow HRM practices that really facilitate innovation such as local training, provide more types of rewards totheir employees and set a higher minimum level of innovation in their performance evaluation.Research limitations/implications – This research confines only 10 public agencies in Malaysia. Futurestudies might want to include a larger sample size to make the findings more extensive. It also would beinteresting to know different approaches in HRM implemented in the private organizations as well as toexamine their influences on performance and other organizational factors.Practical implications – Good and fair HRM practices such as training, reward and performance appraisalpractices that focus on innovation facilitate and produce more innovative employees and organizationinnovation. Thus, public managers should implement them to a higher extent.Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that aims to engage thequalitative method in understanding how HRM practices can facilitate innovation in a developing country

Modeling Uncertainty in Seismic Stability and Earthquake Induced Displacement of Earth Slopes Under Short Term Conditions

    Get PDF
Different models were developed for evaluating the probabilistic three-dimensional (3-D) stability analysis of earth slopes and embankments under earthquake loading using both the safety factor and the displacement criteria of slope failure. These models are formulated and incorporated within a computer program (PTDDSSA). The probabilistic models evaluate the probability of failure under seismic loading considering the different sources of uncertainties involved in the problem. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the different parameters involved in the developed models by applying those models to a well-known landslides (Congress Street) under different levels of seismic hazard. The hypocentral distance and earthquake magnitude were found to have major influence on the earthquake induced displacement, probability of failure (i.e. probability of allowable displacement exceedance), and dynamic 2-D and 3-D safety factors

Cultural heritage, both material and immaterial, is an important representation of a nation's diverse cultures and vital to national identity. Yet this heritage is increasingly coming under threat from ongoing regional conflicts resulting in an unprecedented surge in looting and trafficking in cultural heritage materials throughout the region. Furthermore, social media has led to the exponential growth of this illicit trade of antiquities where an international network of traffickers, traders and terrorists utilize online platforms for the auctioning and sale of cultural goods. This paper seeks to address a number of questions pertaining to the evolving relationship of Gulf states and societies to cultural heritage (museums, private collections, etc.) and the international laws and conventions protecting them. The extent of trafficking that occurs in the region and changing attitudes to it.Scopu

Owning the Future: Modern Arabs and Hamlet

    Get PDF
Responsibility for the future is very often a matter of foresight and foresight is always based on insight, as we all know. What does my insight tell me about this whole issue or problem? It informs me that the modern Arabs are truly the Hamlet of the 20th century. Like the endlessly celebrated prince, they seem able continually to join the underlying passion of the elemental to the brooding intellectuality of the cerebral to the lyrical sensitivity of the poetic but only to end up in unrelieved tragedy. The tragedy consists of unending hesitations, procrastinations, oscillations and waverings between the old and the new, between asalah and muca sarah (authenticty and contemporaneity), between turath and tajdid (heritage and renewal), between huwiyyah and hadathah (identity and modernity), between religions and secularity

Objective/context: More than twenty years after the adoption of the Security Council Resolution 1325, which highlights the importance of women's participation in peacebuilding, they continue to be excluded systematically from the negotiating table. This article examines how women manage access points to negotiations in intractable contexts and fragile peace processes that have not resulted in a peace agreement and how this affects their ability to articulate demands and influence such processes. Methodology: The case of the UN peace process for Syria is examined. Data used for the analysis comes from sixteen semi-structured interviews conducted between January 2019 and August 2022. Conclusions: The results demonstrate how the combination of bottom-up women-led activism processes with top-down institutional efforts facilitates breaking the boundaries operating at different levels (macro, meso, and micro) to masculinize peace negotiations and hinder women's access. Although the fragility of the process compromises their participation, Syrian women circumvent these obstacles through strategies and attitudes of resilience that allow them to value their actions in the future. Originality: The article reviews the literature on women's participation and contributes to situating it in the increasingly common framework of fragile negotiations and contexts of intractability through a barely explored case with unique data drawn from interviews with the political actors involved.Objetivo/contexto: mais de 20 anos após a aprovação da Resolução 1.325 do Conselho de Segurança, que destaca a importância da participação de mulheres na construção da paz, elas continuam sendo sistematicamente excluídas das mesas de negociação.
