SOME APPLICATIONS OF THE WEB AS AN INFORMATION TOOL IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY

Tourism is extremely dependent on information and communication industries. This is true all the more in an environment where tourism is a global industry (with some part of the value chain in the country of origin of the tourist and the remaining in the countries that are destinations). According to Kierzkovski et al. (1996) travel is one of the products “natural fits” with interactive media, in which context the Internet may gain particular relevance. In fact, traveling is one of the most popular online activities (Kierzkovski et al., 1996; Jonkheer, 1999; Pröll and Retschitzegger, 2000), with online expenditures rounding 22% by 2007 (NEWSBYTES, 2002). This aspect modifies not only the tourism business models per se, but consumers’ behaviour as well. Using the Internet as a means to promote the tourism organizations reduces dramatically the costs of advertisement. Also the consumer becomes closer to information and asymmetries in accessing the information are reduced. Disintermediation is another phenomenon consequent from the use of the Internet as an information tool. This article gathers relevant applications from different studies regarding the use of the Internet as a powerful information tool both towards the organizations and the consumers.Internet; Tourism; Information; Web applications

Sustainable fast-food : reality or utopia?

As technology evolved, society has gained deeper levels of knowledge, which influenced it to be more critical. With the aggravation of climate change, sustainability has been under the spotlight for decades, and customers are holding organizations accountable. As fast-food chains’ popularity increased, so did their responsibility towards society. Sustainability can reveal itself to be rather demanding to achieve, especially for fast-food chains who heavily depend on natural and human resources and operate at a global scale. This paper is dedicated to understanding how fast-food chains are implementing sustainability measures. To explore the research question, I employed a comparative case study analysis. The results show examples of measures fast-food chains can implement. Some examples of these successful practices are: outsourcing from local producers; implementing changes at restaurants to reduce energy/resources consumption; improving worker conditions; supporting local institutions and humanitarian causes; offering plant-based products; spreading customer awareness on environmental matters; among others. However, these measures can be challenging to implement, since they require investment, clear communication, and constant monitoring. For this reason, I also present and analyse the tensions and limitations faced by the two cases. This paper represents a valuable source for fast-food chain’ owners to analyse and reflect upon already-implemented practices and potential future ones.Com o desenvolver da tecnologia, a sociedade adquiriu níveis de conhecimento mais profundos, o que a tornou mais crítica. Com o agravar das alterações climáticas, a sustentabilidade tem estado sob os holofotes por décadas, e os consumidores estão a responsabilizar as empresas. Com o aumento da popularidade das cadeias de fast-food, a sua responsabilidade perante a sociedade aumentou também. Alcançar a sustentabilidade pode revelar-se ser exigente, especialmente para as cadeias de fast-food, que dependem intensamente de recursos naturais e humanos e operam à escala global. Este estudo dedica-se à compreensão da implementação de medidas sustentáveis pelas cadeias de fast-food. Para responder à questão da investigação, recorri a um caso de estudo comparativo. Os resultados mostram exemplos de práticas que as cadeias de fast-food podem adotar. Alguns exemplos destas práticas são: outsourcing por produtores locais; implementação de mudanças nos restaurantes para reduzir o consumo de energia/recursos; melhoria das condições laborais; apoio a instituições locais e causas humanitárias; disponibilização de produtos de origem vegetal; promover a conscientização do consumidor em questões ambientais; entre outros. Contudo, implementar estas medidas pode ser desafiante, visto que requerem investimento, comunicação clara, e monitorização constante. Por este motivo, apresento a analiso também as tensões e limitações impostas aos dois casos. Este estudo representa uma fonte valiosa para donos de cadeias de fast-food para analisarem e refletirem sobre as práticas já implementadas e futuras potenciais

UML metamodelling and ERP software solutions: experiments with Microsoft DSL tools

Dissertação de mestrado em Sistemas de InformaçãoMicrosoft DSL (Domain-Specific Language) Tools allow the definition at the metamodelling level of graphical languages suited to a particular domain. The DSL Tools also allow the conception of models with those graphical languages. The proof of concept reported in this dissertation focuses on the domain of a part of the Primavera ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software solution. It exposes a metamodelling approach which can be followed when using the tool to model visual domain-specific languages. It includes a stereotyping approach, abstract and concrete syntaxes’ setting down. The stereotypes allow the adaptation of the graphical language to the domain. Together, stereotypes and language definition through a metamodel make up the DSVL (Domain-Specific Visual Language). This dissertation explains how to perform both the abstract syntax design through metamodels resembling UML (Unified Modelling Language) class diagrams and the concrete syntax definition through the mapping between the elements in the abstract syntax and the visual constructs of the DSVL. Having metamodels inspired by UML is a pertinent approach defended in this dissertation. UML is a standard with worldwide impact, therefore, graphical languages inspired by UML can be handled by professionals worldwide to design their applications and communicate their design decisions. We can create UML-based graphical languages with Microsoft DSL Tools in order to be able to reason about the solution to the problem domain of a portion of the Primavera ERP and still be able to communicate with professionals familiarized with UML about our design decisions. A compromise between domain knowledge and cross-domain knowledge is established with a UML-inspired language tailored to a specific domain. In this dissertation, stereotypes and domain-specific concepts tailor the graphical languages to the domain, whereas metamodels determine a UML-based syntax for the graphical languages.As Microsoft DSL (Domain-Specific Language) Tools permitem a definição ao nível da metamodelação de linguagens gráficas ajustadas a um domínio em particular. As DSL Tools também permitem a concepção de modelos expressos nessas mesmas linguagens. A prova de conceito reportada nesta dissertação foca-se no domínio de uma parte da solução de software Primavera ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). A dissertação expõe uma abordagem de metamodelação que pode ser seguida durante a utilização da ferramenta DSL Tools para modelar linguagens visuais específicas de um domínio. Inclui uma abordagem de estereotipagem, bem como a definição de sintaxes abstracta e concreta. Os estereótipos permitem a adaptação da linguagem gráfica ao domínio. Juntos, os estereótipos e a definição da linguagem através de um metamodelo constituem a DSVL (Domain-Specific Visual Language). Esta dissertação explica como executar tanto o design da sintaxe abstracta através de metamodelos que se assemelham a diagramas de classes UML (Unified Modelling Language), como a definição da sintaxe concreta através do mapeamento entre os elementos da sintaxe abstracta e os elementos visuais da DSVL. Construir metamodelos inspirados pela UML é uma abordagem pertinente defendida nesta dissertação. A UML é um standard com impacto mundial, logo, linguagens gráficas inspiradas pela UML podem ser manuseadas por profissionais a nível mundial para desenhar as suas aplicações e comunicar as suas decisões de desenho. Podem ser criadas linguagens gráficas baseadas em UML com as Microsoft DSL Tools com o intuito de tornar possível o raciocínio acerca da solução para o domínio do problema de uma porção do ERP Primavera e mesmo assim ser possível comunicar com profissionais familiarizados com a UML acerca das decisões de desenho tomadas. Um compromisso entre o conhecimento do domínio e o conhecimento que é transversal a vários domínios é estabelecido com uma linguagem inspirada em UML e talhada para um domínio específico. Nesta dissertação, os estereótipos e os conceitos específicos do domínio adaptam as linguagens gráficas ao domínio, enquanto que os metamodelos determinam uma sintaxe baseada em UML para as mesmas linguagens gráficas

Erupção Acneiforme Refratária Reveladora de Doença de Behçet: A Propósito de um Caso Clínico com Resposta Tardia mas Eficaz ao Adalimumab

Behçet's disease is a systemic vasculitis with a chronic-relapsing course, which can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. From the often-compelling challenge of making a prompt diagnosis comes the difficulty in its treatment. We report the case of a patient with an acneiform skin eruption revealing Behçet's disease that was refractory to conventional therapy and later completely responded to adalimumab. Although randomized controlled clinical trials are lacking in the literature, there is already significant evidence supporting anti-TNF agents as a major therapeutic advance in Behçet's disease, particularly in cases that are severe, refractory or intolerant to classical immunosuppression.A doença de Behçet é uma vasculite sistémica crónica e recidivante que pode levar a um aumento significativo da morbilidade e mortalidade. Após superar o desafio em fazer o seu diagnóstico atempado, que muitas vezes se impõe, surge a dificuldade no seu tratamento. Relata-se um caso de um doente que se apresentou com uma erupção acneiforme reveladora de doença de Behçet, refratária à terapia convencional, que respondeu mais tarde e completamente, ao adalimumab. Na literatura científica, embora faltem ensaios clínicos controlados e randomizados, há já evidência significativa que suporta o papel dos agentes anti-TNF como um importante avanço terapêutico na doença de Behçet, particularmente em casos graves, refratários ou intolerantes à imunossupressão clássica

El lugar de la poesía en las orientaciones curriculares oficiales portuguesas

O artigo analisa o lugar da poesia nas diversas orientações curriculares oficiais portuguesas: no Currículo Nacional do Ensino Básico, publicado em 2001, no Programa de Português do Ensino Básico, que entrou em vigor em 2011, e nas Metas Curriculares de Português para o Ensino Básico, já em vigor. Os autores concluem que, apesar de a poesia constituir uma mais-valia para a criança, ao facultar-lhe, de modo natural e harmonioso, o domínio de uma série de competências relevantes ao nível linguístico-literário, os documentos oficiais não lhe concedem grande relevância.The article analyzes the place of poetry in several Portuguese official curriculum guidelines: in the National Curriculum of Basic Education, published in 2001, in the Portuguese Program for Basic Education, which came into force in 2011, and in the Portuguese Curricular Goals for Basic Education already in place. The authors conclude that although poetry is an asset for the child, because it provides him, in a natural and harmonious way, the domain of a range of relevant skills on the linguistic and literary levels, official documents do not provide poetry a great relevance.El artículo analiza el lugar de la poesía en varios textos curriculares oficiales portugueses: en el Currículo Nacional de Educación Básica, publicado en 2001, en el Programa Portugués para la Educación Básica, que entró en vigor en 2011, y los Objetivos de Portugués Curriculares para la Educación Básica ya en el lugar. Changing Practices, Changing Identities: A Study with Students at Risk of Educational Exclusion

This study discusses how students at risk of educational exclusion can restore their identity and improve learning and scientific literacy. This qualitative research adopts an interpretative orientation. Twenty-eight secondary school students, aged 16 to 20 participated. Data was collected of the interactions between students in lessons, focus group interview and written documents. Data analysis was inductive, consistent with a naturalistic research paradigm, and consisted of uncovering salient patterns, singularities, and themes associated with research aims. Several students, at risk of educational exclusion, value this kind of practice.
