    Neural Networks for Aircraft Trajectory Prediction: Answering Open Questions About Their Performance

    The increase in air traffic in the recent years has motivated the development of technologies to monitor air space and warn about possible collisions by predicting the trajectories that will be followed by aircraft. In this field, neural networks have become prominent thanks to their potential to learn to predict maneuvers without providing aspects that are difficult to model such as atmospheric conditions, or detailed aircraft parameters. A variety of models have been proposed; however, these are often tested in very limited setups, leaving many unanswered questions about how they perform in certain conditions, or whether or not their accuracy can be improved by training models for specific trajectories, using additional features, predicting more distant points directly, etc. This may be problematic for researchers or developers of these systems, who have no way of knowing what strategies will yield the best results. We have identified ten open research questions that have not been answered through in-depth testing. This motivated us to carry out a novel experimental study that performs aircraft trajectory prediction with several dozens configuration variants to answer the aforementioned questions by means of a much more complete evaluation. Some of the conclusions of our study stand in contrast with some popular practices in the state of the art, which casts some doubts on the simplicity of their application; for example, differential features are crucial for proper performance but are not mentioned by most studies, while complex, more elaborate models may lead to worse results than simple ones. Other important insights include the benefit from specialized models in more challenging scenarios, the influence of the known trajectory length in said scenarios, the step degradation of predictions when predicting further into the future, or the detrimental effect of adding additional features. These insights should help guide future research about the application of neural networks when it comes to aircraft trajectory prediction and their eventual inclusion in final systems.journal articl

    A study of cyclonic activity in the North Atlantic for the 2005 versus 2020 season

    Ponencia presentada en: XII Congreso de la Asociación Española de Climatología celebrado en Santiago de Compostela entre el 19 y el 21 de octubre de 2022.Over the last two decades, the North Atlantic ocean basin has experienced record-breaking hurricane seasons with regards to storm frequency and intensity. This short study examines the ocean and atmospheric characteristics of the two most active hurricane seasons on record, the 2005 and 2020 seasons. Accumulated cyclone energy, sea surface temperature, sea-level pressure and wind shear data in the main development region of the North Atlantic are compared between the two record-breaking seasons. Results of time series analysis show that 2005 was the hurricane season with the highest accumulated cyclone energy index, while 2020 was the 4th highest of 55 seasons analyzed. Results of spatial analysis of sea surface temperature anomalies exhibit that 2005 had a slightly higher average surface temperature than 2020 in the main development region of tropical cyclones, and that 2005 had higher temperatures in the central region of the study area while 2020 had higher surface temperatures in the southern Caribbean region. Comparisons between the sea level pressure anomalies show that 2005 had a slightly lower average pressure than 2020, with 2005 exhibiting lower anomalies in the northern area and 2020 showing anomalous pressure patterns in the eastern part of the main development region. When wind shear anomalies are examined, we found that 2020 had a lower average wind shear than 2005, a factor that could explain why 2020 had a higher number of tropical cyclones. Overall our results suggest that both 2005 and 2020 seasons had similar ideal ocean-atmospheric conditions for higher tropical cyclone activity

    Direct sampling method via Landweber iteration for an absorbing scatterer with a conductive boundary

    In this paper, we consider the inverse shape problem of recovering isotropic scatterers with a conductive boundary condition. Here, we assume that the measured far-field data is known at a fixed wave number. Motivated by recent work, we study a new direct sampling indicator based on the Landweber iteration and the factorization method. Therefore, we prove the connection between these reconstruction methods. The method studied here falls under the category of qualitative reconstruction methods where an imaging function is used to recover the absorbing scatterer. We prove stability of our new imaging function as well as derive a discrepancy principle for recovering the regularization parameter. The theoretical results are verified with numerical examples to show how the reconstruction performs by the new Landweber direct sampling method.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2301.1002

    The introduction of technological devices in a social system whose main objective is the generation of knowledge afects such social system’s structure. This article shows how such structural change can be described using Luhmann’s system theory. It is possible to differentiate the factors which provide the social system with the required means not only to incorporate the necessary entropy in its communications, but to diminish the effect of such an entropic gain through restructure and redundancy measures. This description is grounded on a native toungue oral and written communication abilities course (Analysis and Verbal Expression Workshop). This course was taught in 2008 to 82 second-semester students in the Tecnológico de Monterrey Ciudad de México campus. Students in this course used the BlackBerry Pearl cellphone as a didactic resource in an mobile virtual environment.La introducción de dispositivos tecnológicos en un sistema social cuyo propósito principal es la generación de conocimiento afecta la estructura de tal sistema social. Este artículo muestra cómo tal cambio estructural puede ser descrito mediante la teoría de sistemas de Luhmann (TSL). Es posible diferenciar los factores que proveen al sistema social de los medios requeridos para no solamente incorporar la entropía necesaria en sus comunicaciones sino también para disminuir el efecto de dicha ganancia entrópica a través de medidas de restructuración y redundancia. Esta descripción se fundamenta en un curso de enseñanza de habilidades comunicativas orales y escritas en lengua materna (Taller de Análisis y Expresión Verbal- TAEV), el cual fue impartido a 82 alumnos en el primer semestre de 2010 en el Tecnológico de Monterrey campus Ciudad de México.
