    Två höjdtilldelningsmetoder för trädhöjder

    Detta kandidatarbete avsåg att utvärdera två metoder för höjdtilldelning av enskilda träd och hur dessa påverkade kvalitén på skattningar av grundytevägd medelhöjd gjord med hjälp av laserdata. De metoder som utvärderades var Söderbergs funktioner och en ny metod som Riksskogstaxeringen nyligen tagit fram. Studien skedde i tre delar, först en jämförelse mellan de värden för varje provyta som tilldelats enligt Söderbergs funktioner respektive Riksskogstaxeringens metod, sedan en regressionsanalys av mängden värden från respektive metod och laserdata, och slutligen en granskning av regressionsfunktionernas noggrannhet gentemot fältinventerade provytor som inte användes i framtagandet av funktionerna. För att göra dessa analyser användes Riksskogstaxeringens provytor, Lantmäteriets laserdata samt provytor tillhandahållna av Bergvik Skog.Resultatet visade på att den nya metoden gav systematiskt högre skattningar än Söderbergs funktioner. Skattningar gjorda utifrån laserdata baserade på den nya metoden hamnade närmare det fältinventerade värdet, jämfört med skattningar grundade på Söderbergs funktioner.The aim of this bachelors degree thesis was to analyze how estimations of basal area weighted mean height made with airborne laser scanning (ALS) data is affected by the tree wise height estimation method used for the plots before regression analysis. The methods compared are Söderberg’s functions and a new method produced by the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI). This study was performed in three parts. First an initial comparison between the values assigned to every plot was made. Then a regression analysis between these values and laser data was completed. Finally an evaluation of estimations made with the computed functions versus third party inventoried values was performed. To make this analysis, data was used that came from the NFI, Lantmäteriet’s (the Swedish national land survey) national laser scanning, and Bergvik Skog. The result showed that the new method developed by the NFI systematically produced a higher value than Söderberg’s functions. It was found that the estimates, made with ALS data, based on the new height estimation method showed better agreement with the evaluation data from Bergvik Skog than the estimates based on Söderberg’s functions

    Short-term effects of continuous cover forestry on forest biomass production and biodiversity: Applying single-tree selection in forests dominated by Picea abies

    The rotation forestry system provides high biomass production, but could also have a negative impact on species sensitive to disturbance. Continuous cover forestry (CCF) could contribute to solving these conflicting goals, but its feasibility in nutrient limited boreal forests is yet unresolved. In a unique experiment, we simultaneously assessed the short-term effect of single-tree selection on both biomass production and biodiversity (vascular plants, bryophytes, wood-inhabiting fungi), and tested fertilization as a way to mediate growth-biodiversity trade-offs. We found that unharvested stands and stands subjected to single-tree selection had a similar species assemblage of vascular plants, bryophytes, and wood-inhabiting fungi. Fertilization increased growth by 37% and induced shifts in two understory species (favoring the grass Avenella flexuosa and disfavoring the bryophyte Hylocomium splendens). We conclude that single-tree selection may become a useful tool to enhance biodiversity in managed forests

    Long-term yield and biodiversity in stands managed with the selection system and the rotation forestry system: A qualitative review

    There is an increasing interest in implementing Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) as a tool to mitigate negative effects of the traditional rotation forestry system on biodiversity. However, the effects of CCF on forest growth and yield and on biodiversity is still poorly known. In this qualitative review, we compare biodiversity and longterm yield between the selection system, which is a type of CCF practiced in full-storied forests, and the traditional rotation forestry system. We specifically focus on forests dominated by Picea abies, which is a tree species of high economic relevance. Our literature search resulted in 17 publications on stand growth and yield and 21 publications on biodiversity. A majority of simulation studies found a higher long-term yield in the rotation forestry system, but it is challenging to conclude which system is the most productive. The magnitude of the difference in yield between systems, and how it varies across different environmental conditions, remains to be determined. For biodiversity, comparisons of species assemblage and individual species were only made to certain phases of the rotation cycle (recent clearcuts and middle-aged stands). Nevertheless, two aspects can be highlighted: i) the species assemblage in clearcuts differ substantially from stands managed with the selection system. Some of these effects may however be short lasting as examplified by studies on beetle assamblages showing that middle-aged rotation forestry stands become more similar to stands managed with the selection system, ii) the selection system maintains a similar species assemblage as the uncut control during the first years after cutting. In conclusion, management with the selection system may come with a loss in long-term stand yield, but much of the species assemblage is maintained after logging. We recommend future studies to specifically focus on long-term effects on biodiversity - in particular on species of conservation concern. There is also a need to establish a long-term research infrastructure to further develop the field

    Detailed Analysis of Variants in FTO in Association with Body Composition in a Cohort of 70-Year-Olds Suggests a Weakened Effect among Elderly

    The rs9939609 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the fat mass and obesity (FTO) gene has previously been associated with higher BMI levels in children and young adults. In contrast, this association was not found in elderly men. BMI is a measure of overweight in relation to the individuals' height, but offers no insight into the regional body fat composition or distribution.To examine whether the FTO gene is associated with overweight and body composition-related phenotypes rather than BMI, we measured waist circumference, total fat mass, trunk fat mass, leg fat mass, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, and daily energy intake in 985 humans (493 women) at the age of 70 years. In total, 733 SNPs located in the FTO gene were genotyped in order to examine whether rs9939609 alone or the other SNPs, or their combinations, are linked to obesity-related measures in elderly humans.Cross-sectional analysis of the Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) cohort.Neither a single SNP, such as rs9939609, nor a SNP combination was significantly linked to overweight, body composition-related measures, or daily energy intake in elderly humans. Of note, these observations hold both among men and women.Due to the diversity of measurements included in the study, our findings strengthen the view that the effect of FTO on body composition appears to be less profound in later life compared to younger ages and that this is seemingly independent of gender

    PoGOLite - A High Sensitivity Balloon-Borne Soft Gamma-ray Polarimeter

    We describe a new balloon-borne instrument (PoGOLite) capable of detecting 10% polarisation from 200mCrab point-like sources between 25 and 80keV in one 6 hour flight. Polarisation measurements in the soft gamma-ray band are expected to provide a powerful probe into high-energy emission mechanisms as well as the distribution of magnetic fields, radiation fields and interstellar matter. At present, only exploratory polarisation measurements have been carried out in the soft gamma-ray band. Reduction of the large background produced by cosmic-ray particles has been the biggest challenge. PoGOLite uses Compton scattering and photo-absorption in an array of 217 well-type phoswich detector cells made of plastic and BGO scintillators surrounded by a BGO anticoincidence shield and a thick polyethylene neutron shield. The narrow FOV (1.25msr) obtained with well-type phoswich detector technology and the use of thick background shields enhance the detected S/N ratio. Event selections based on recorded phototube waveforms and Compton kinematics reduce the background to that expected for a 40-100mCrab source between 25 and 50keV. A 6 hour observation on the Crab will differentiate between the Polar Cap/Slot Gap, Outer Gap, and Caustic models with greater than 5 sigma; and also cleanly identify the Compton reflection component in the Cygnus X-1 hard state. The first flight is planned for 2010 and long-duration flights from Sweden to Northern Canada are foreseen thereafter.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 2 table

    Consultation on kidney stones, Copenhagen 2019: lithotripsy in percutaneous nephrolithotomy

    Purpose: To evaluate the balance between existing evidence and expert opinions on the safety and efficacy of new technological improvements in lithotripsy techniques for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Methods: A scoping review approach was applied to search literature in Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science. Consensus by key opinion leaders was reached at a 2-day meeting entitled "Consultation on Kidney Stones: Aspects of Intracorporeal Lithotripsy" held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September 2019. Results: New-generation dual-mode single-probe lithotripsy devices have shown favourable results compared with use of ballistic or ultrasonic lithotripters only. However, ballistic and ultrasonic lithotripters are also highly effective and safe and have been the backbone of PCNL for many years. Compared with standard PCNL, it seems that mini PCNL is associated with fewer bleeding complications and shorter hospital admissions, but also with longer operating room (OR) time and higher intrarenal pressure. Use of laser lithotripsy combined with suction in mini PCNL is a promising alternative that may improve such PCNL by shortening OR times. Furthermore, supine PCNL is a good alternative, especially in cases with complex renal stones and large proximal ureteric stones; in addition, it facilitates endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS). Conclusion: Recent technological improvements in PCNL techniques are promising, but there is a lack of high-level evidence on safety and efficacy. Different techniques suit different types of stones and patients. The evolution of diverse methods has given urologists the possibility of a personalized stone approach, in other words, the right approach for the right patient

    Genome wide association study identifies KCNMA1 contributing to human obesity

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent genome-wide association (GWA) analyses have identified common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are associated with obesity. However, the reported genetic variation in obesity explains only a minor fraction of the total genetic variation expected to be present in the population. Thus many genetic variants controlling obesity remain to be identified. The aim of this study was to use GWA followed by multiple stepwise validations to identify additional genes associated with obesity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We performed a GWA analysis in 164 morbidly obese subjects (BMI:body mass index > 40 kg/m<sup>2</sup>) and 163 Swedish subjects (> 45 years) who had always been lean. The 700 SNPs displaying the strongest association with obesity in the GWA were analyzed in a second cohort comprising 460 morbidly obese subjects and 247 consistently lean Swedish adults. 23 SNPs remained significantly associated with obesity (nominal <it>P</it>< 0.05) and were in a step-wise manner followed up in five additional cohorts from Sweden, France, and Germany together comprising 4214 obese and 5417 lean or population-based control individuals. Three samples, n = 4133, were used to investigate the population-based associations with BMI. Gene expression in abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue in relation to obesity was investigated for14 adults.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Potassium channel, calcium activated, large conductance, subfamily M, alpha member <it>(KCNMA1) </it>rs2116830*G and <it>BDNF </it>rs988712*G were associated with obesity in five of six investigated case-control cohorts. In meta-analysis of 4838 obese and 5827 control subjects we obtained genome-wide significant allelic association with obesity for <it>KCNMA1 </it>rs2116830*G with <it>P </it>= 2.82 Ă— 10<sup>-10 </sup>and an odds ratio (OR) based on cases vs controls of 1.26 [95% C.I. 1.12-1.41] and for <it>BDNF </it>rs988712*G with <it>P </it>= 5.2 Ă— 10<sup>-17</sup>and an OR of 1.36 [95% C.I. 1.20-1.55]. <it>KCNMA1 </it>rs2116830*G was not associated with BMI in the population-based samples. Adipose tissue (<it>P </it>= 0.0001) and fat cell (<it>P </it>= 0.04) expression of <it>KCNMA1 </it>was increased in obesity.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We have identified <it>KCNMA1 </it>as a new susceptibility locus for obesity, and confirmed the association of the <it>BDNF </it>locus at the genome-wide significant level.</p
