On Augmented Stochastic Submodular Optimization: Adaptivity, Multi-Rounds, Budgeted, and Robustness
In this work we consider the problem of Stochastic Submodular Maximization, in which we would like to maximize the value of a monotone and submodular objective function, subject to the fact that the values of this function depend on the realization of stochastic events. This problem has applications in several areas, and in particular it well models basic problems such as influence maximization and stochastic probing. In this work, we advocate the necessity to extend the study of this problem in order to include several different features such as a budget constraint on the number of observations, the chance of adaptively choosing what we observe or the presence of multiple rounds. We here speculate on the possible directions that this line of research can take. In particular, we will discuss about interesting open problems mainly in the settings of robust optimization and online learning
Limit quantum efficiency for violation of Clauser-Horne Inequality for qutrits
In this paper we present the results of numerical calculations about the
minimal value of detection efficiency for violating the Clauser - Horne
inequality for qutrits. Our results show how the use of non-maximally entangled
states largely improves this limit respect to maximally entangled ones. A

Price Competition, Fluctuations, and Welfare Guarantees
In various markets where sellers compete in price, price oscillations are
observed rather than convergence to equilibrium. Such fluctuations have been
empirically observed in the retail market for gasoline, in airline pricing and
in the online sale of consumer goods. Motivated by this, we study a model of
price competition in which an equilibrium rarely exists. We seek to analyze the
welfare, despite the nonexistence of an equilibrium, and present welfare
guarantees as a function of the market power of the sellers.
We first study best response dynamics in markets with sellers that provide a
homogeneous good, and show that except for a modest number of initial rounds,
the welfare is guaranteed to be high. We consider two variations: in the first
the sellers have full information about the valuation of the buyer. Here we
show that if there are items available across all sellers and is
the maximum number of items controlled by any given seller, the ratio of the
optimal welfare to the achieved welfare will be at most
. As the market power of the largest seller
diminishes, the welfare becomes closer to optimal. In the second variation we
consider an extended model where sellers have uncertainty about the buyer's
valuation. Here we similarly show that the welfare improves as the market power
of the largest seller decreases, yet with a worse ratio of
. The exponential gap in welfare between the two
variations quantifies the value of accurately learning the buyer valuation.
Finally, we show that extending our results to heterogeneous goods in general
is not possible. Even for the simple class of -additive valuations, there
exists a setting where the welfare approximates the optimal welfare within any
non-zero factor only for fraction of the time, where is the number

Metastability of Asymptotically Well-Behaved Potential Games
One of the main criticisms to game theory concerns the assumption of full
rationality. Logit dynamics is a decentralized algorithm in which a level of
irrationality (a.k.a. "noise") is introduced in players' behavior. In this
context, the solution concept of interest becomes the logit equilibrium, as
opposed to Nash equilibria. Logit equilibria are distributions over strategy
profiles that possess several nice properties, including existence and
uniqueness. However, there are games in which their computation may take time
exponential in the number of players. We therefore look at an approximate
version of logit equilibria, called metastable distributions, introduced by
Auletta et al. [SODA 2012]. These are distributions that remain stable (i.e.,
players do not go too far from it) for a super-polynomial number of steps
(rather than forever, as for logit equilibria). The hope is that these
distributions exist and can be reached quickly by logit dynamics.
We identify a class of potential games, called asymptotically well-behaved,
for which the behavior of the logit dynamics is not chaotic as the number of
players increases so to guarantee meaningful asymptotic results. We prove that
any such game admits distributions which are metastable no matter the level of
noise present in the system, and the starting profile of the dynamics. These
distributions can be quickly reached if the rationality level is not too big
when compared to the inverse of the maximum difference in potential. Our proofs
build on results which may be of independent interest, including some spectral
characterizations of the transition matrix defined by logit dynamics for
generic games and the relationship of several convergence measures for Markov
chains
Decellularized skeletal muscles support the generation of in vitro neuromuscular tissue models
Decellularized skeletal muscle (dSkM) constructs have received much attention in recent years due to the versatility of their applications in vitro. In search of adequate in vitro models of the skeletal muscle tissue, the dSkM offers great advantages in terms of the preservation of native-tissue complexity, including three-dimensional organization, the presence of residual signaling molecules within the construct, and their myogenic and neurotrophic abilities. Here, we attempted to develop a 3D model of neuromuscular tissue. To do so, we repopulated rat dSkM with human primary myogenic cells along with murine fibroblasts and we coupled them with organotypic rat spinal cord samples. Such culture conditions not only maintained multiple cell type viability in a long-term experimental setup, but also resulted in functionally active construct capable of contraction. In addition, we have developed a customized culture system which enabled easy access, imaging, and analysis of in vitro engineered co-cultures. This work demonstrates the ability of dSkM to support the development of a contractile 3D in vitro model of neuromuscular tissue fit for long-term experimental evaluations
Integrated Bimodal Fitting for Unilateral CI Users with Residual Contralateral Hearing
Background: The aim of this study was to compare, in users of bimodal cochlear implants,
the performance obtained using their own hearing aids (adjusted with the standard NAL-NL1 fitting
formula) with the performance using the Phonak NaĂŹda Link Ultra Power hearing aid adjusted with
both NAL-NL1 and a new bimodal system (Adaptive Phonak Digital Bimodal (APDB)) developed
by Advanced Bionics and Phonak Corporations. Methods: Eleven bimodal users (NaĂŹda CI Q70 +
contralateral hearing aid) were enrolled in our study. The usersâ own hearing aids were replaced
with the Phonak NaĂŹda Link Ultra Power and fitted following the new formula. Speech intelligibility
was assessed in quiet and noisy conditions, and comparisons were made with the results obtained
with the usersâ previous hearing aids and with the NaĂda Link hearing aids fitted with the NAL-NL1
generic prescription formula. Results: Using Phonak NaĂŹda Link Ultra Power hearing aids with
the Adaptive Phonak Digital Bimodal fitting formula, performance was significantly better than
that with the usersâ own rehabilitation systems, especially in challenging hearing situations for all
analyzed subjects. Conclusions: Speech intelligibility tests in quiet settings did not reveal a significant
difference in performance between the new fitting formula and NAL-NL1 fittings (using the NaĂda
Link hearing aids), whereas the performance difference between the two fittings was very significant
in noisy test conditions
Realism and Objectivism in Quantum Mechanics
The present study attempts to provide a consistent and coherent account of
what the world could be like, given the conceptual framework and results of
contemporary quantum theory. It is suggested that standard quantum mechanics
can, and indeed should, be understood as a realist theory within its domain of
application. It is pointed out, however, that a viable realist interpretation
of quantum theory requires the abandonment or radical revision of the classical
conception of physical reality and its traditional philosophical
presuppositions. It is argued, in this direction, that the conceptualization of
the nature of reality, as arising out of our most basic physical theory, calls
for a kind of contextual realism. Within the domain of quantum mechanics,
knowledge of 'reality in itself', 'the real such as it truly is' independent of
the way it is contextualized, is impossible in principle. In this connection,
the meaning of objectivity in quantum mechanics is analyzed, whilst the

Pre-existing invasive fungal infection is not a contraindication for allogeneic HSCT for patients with hematologic malignancies: a CIBMTR study.
Patients with prior invasive fungal infection (IFI) increasingly proceed to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HSCT). However, little is known about the impact of prior IFI on survival. Patients with pre-transplant IFI (cases; n=825) were compared with controls (n=10247). A subset analysis assessed outcomes in leukemia patients pre- and post 2001. Cases were older with lower performance status (KPS), more advanced disease, higher likelihood of AML and having received cord blood, reduced intensity conditioning, mold-active fungal prophylaxis and more recently transplanted. Aspergillus spp. and Candida spp. were the most commonly identified pathogens. 68% of patients had primarily pulmonary involvement. Univariate and multivariable analysis demonstrated inferior PFS and overall survival (OS) for cases. At 2 years, cases had higher mortality and shorter PFS with significant increases in non-relapse mortality (NRM) but no difference in relapse. One year probability of post-HSCT IFI was 24% (cases) and 17% (control, P<0.001). The predominant cause of death was underlying malignancy; infectious death was higher in cases (13% vs 9%). In the subset analysis, patients transplanted before 2001 had increased NRM with inferior OS and PFS compared with later cases. Pre-transplant IFI is associated with lower PFS and OS after allogeneic HSCT but significant survivorship was observed. Consequently, pre-transplant IFI should not be a contraindication to allogeneic HSCT in otherwise suitable candidates. Documented pre-transplant IFI is associated with lower PFS and OS after allogeneic HSCT. However, mortality post transplant is more influenced by advanced disease status than previous IFI. Pre-transplant IFI does not appear to be a contraindication to allogeneic HSCT
Performance and characteristics of the Newborn Hearing Screening Program in Campania region (Italy) between 2013 and 2019
Purpose: Universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) in the first month of life is crucial for facilitating both early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) of significant permanent hearing impairment (PHI). In Campania region, UNHS has been introduced in 2003 by the Regional Council Resolution and started on January 2007. The aim of this paper is to update a previous article describing the performance of the program since its implementation in the period between 2013 and 2019. Methods: A longitudinal retrospective study was carried at the Regional Reference Center III on 350,178 babies born in the analysis period. The paper reports the main results of overall coverage, referral rate, lost-to-follow-up rate,yield for PHI and shall determine various risk factor associations with hearing impairment Results: In Campania region, 318,878 newborns were enrolled at I level, with a coverage rate of 91.06%, 301,818 (86.18%) Well Infant Nurseries (WIN) and 17,060 (5.35%) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) babies. PHI was identified in 413 children, 288 (69.73%) bilaterally and 125 (30.26%) unilaterally. The overall cumulative incidence rate of PHI was 1.29 per 1000 live-born infants (95% CI 1.17â1.42) with a quite steady tendency during the whole study period. Conclusions: This study confirms the feasibility and effectiveness of UNHS in Campania region also in a setting with major socioeconomic and health organization restrictions.The program meets quality benchmarks to evaluate the progress of UNHS. Nowadays, it is possible to achieve an early diagnosis of all types of HL avoiding the consequences of hearing deprivation
A 3-player protocol preventing persistence in strategic contention with limited feedback
In this paper, we study contention resolution protocols from a game-theoretic
perspective. In a recent work, we considered acknowledgment-based protocols,
where a user gets feedback from the channel only when she attempts
transmission. In this case she will learn whether her transmission was
successful or not. One of the main results of ESA2016 was that no
acknowledgment-based protocol can be in equilibrium. In fact, it seems that
many natural acknowledgment-based protocols fail to prevent users from
unilaterally switching to persistent protocols that always transmit with
probability 1. It is therefore natural to ask how powerful a protocol must be
so that it can beat persistent deviators.
In this paper we consider age-based protocols, which can be described by a
sequence of probabilities of transmitting in each time step. Those
probabilities are given beforehand and do not change based on the transmission
history. We present a 3-player age-based protocol that can prevent users from
unilaterally deviating to a persistent protocol in order to decrease their
expected transmission time. It is worth noting that the answer to this question
does not follow from the results and proof ideas of ESA2016. Our protocol is
non-trivial, in the sense that, when all players use it, finite expected
transmission time is guaranteed. In fact, we show that this protocol is
preferable to any deadline protocol in which, after some fixed time, attempt
transmission with probability 1 in every subsequent step. An advantage of our
protocol is that it is very simple to describe, and users only need a counter
to keep track of time. Whether there exist -player age-based protocols that
do not use counters and can prevent persistence is left as an open problem for
