Effects of land use and climate change on erosion intensity and sediment geochemistry at Lake Lehmilampi, Finland

International audienceThis paper aims to evaluate the possible relationships between erosion intensity and changes in climate and land use during the past 5.5 cal. k years at Lake Lehmilampi, eastern Finland. In this study we compare a detailed geochemical sediment record with (1) forest and land use history inferred from the first pollen and charcoal records from Lake Lehmilampi, and (2) existing archaeological surveys and independent proxy-records of climate change in the study region. The physical and geochemical sediment parameters examined include grain size analysis data and 23 chemical elements, determined with four selective extractions and ICP-MS. There are indications of possible human impact in the lake catchment as early as the Neolithic period, c. 3000-2550 bc, but the first undisputable signs are dated to 1800-100 bc. Cereal pollen reappears at c. ad 1700 and increases rapidly until c. ad 1950. The Holocene Thermal Maximum, its end c. 2000 bc, and the 'Medieval Climate Anomaly' were major climate events that had a prominent effect on erosion intensity, while human impact was a more significant factor during the period 3000 bc-ad 800 and from ad 1500 onwards. Although signs of changes in erosion intensity found in the sediment were small in this small catchment, they were significant enough to have a clear impact on the fraction of potentially mobile element species. This fraction increases with decreasing erosion intensity, which is probably related to a higher degree of chemical weathering and leaching during periods of decreased erosio

Libraries and Young Adults : A Study of the Work and Profile at Two Young Adults Library Departments

    No full text
The aim of this thesis is to examine how two young adult departments at two public libraries work and what profiles the young adult departments have. To examine the work and profiles at the young adult departments I have used the following questions: What are the ideas about working with young adults? How are the two departments in this study working whit young adults? What or which are the profiles of the young adult departments in this study? To answer the questions above I used a qualitative method based on interviews with the librarians responsible for the young adult departments. To complete the interviews I studied the libraries Internet sites and official documents. The examined departments are located at two city libraries and were chosen manly for their focused age group, 15-25 years and that the departments are well established. To analyse the results I used the theoretic model of Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hansen about the role of the public library. The model describes library profiles from four perspectives: the library as a cultural centre, a knowledge centre, an information centre and a social centre. I also used previous studies about the work with young adults at public libraries to analyse the results from the empiric studies. The analytical findings show many similarities in young adult services between theory and my study. Marketing, user treatment, user influence, the selection of activities and media and finally co-operation are the five categories in which the libraries focus their work with young adults. This is according to the results from my study and previous studies. The results from the analysis of the departments profiles show that the departments have traces from three of the categories but the main profile of both departments are the departments as a cultural centre

En Adaptationsanalys av Oscar Wildes roman 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' och David Rosenbaums film 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'

    No full text

On enchytraeids and naidids: Life history traits and responses to environmental stress

    No full text
My thesis shows that enchytraeids and naidids are sensitive to various forms of environmental stress, which in combination with the wide distribution of both families make them highly suitable for use in risk assessment and soil monitoring. Enchytraeids were subject to chemical stress under both laboratory and field conditions. In laboratory experiments enchytraeids reacted to chemical stress with decreased reproduction and growth. When given the possibility the enchytraeids avoided metal polluted soil. A standardized test based on the enchytraeid Cognettia sphagnetorum was developed to provide a method for monitoring the quality of forest, bog and pasture soils. Exposure of enchytraeids to a fungicide in the field resulted in reduced abundance of the indigenous enchytraeid fauna. The combined stress due to the fungicide and competition from added enchytraeid individuals increased the reduction further. To study possible impacts of forest management on litter fauna in a primary terra firme rain forest in the Amazonas, colonization of leaf litter by oligochaetes (Enchytraeidae, Naididae, Tubificidae) was studied in a litter bag experiment. Naidid worms were the most rapid colonizers and showed the highest reproductive output owing to asexual reproduction. To investigate what factor limits terrestrial naidid population dynamics in tropical soils, population growth of the naidid Pristinella jenkinae was studied in a laboratory experiment. Soil moisture and food abundance were the most important limiting factors

Journalists and librarians : two professions in collaboration

    No full text
The purpose of this work is to investigate collaboration between journalists and librarians. These two groups meet in the archives of the modern newspapers. The theoretical part deals with the functions which society has given journalism and the libraries. A comparison is made between the two groups and the author notes resemblance anddifferences. The practical part is an investigation of some journalists at Boras Tidning, a Swedish newspaper. They have answered questions about their usage of the archive which has an educatedlibrarian. As this has not been the case for more than four years, the work of the journalists haschanged in different ways. Advantages and disadvantages are presented
