Estimating data divergence in cloud computing storage systems
Engenharia InformáticaMany internet services are provided through cloud computing infrastructures that
are composed of multiple data centers. To provide high availability and low latency, data is replicated in machines in different data centers, which introduces the complexity of guaranteeing that clients view data consistently. Data stores often opt for a relaxed approach to replication, guaranteeing only eventual consistency, since it improves latency of operations. However, this may lead to replicas having different values for the same data.
One solution to control the divergence of data in eventually consistent systems is
the usage of metrics that measure how stale data is for a replica. In the past, several
algorithms have been proposed to estimate the value of these metrics in a deterministic
way. An alternative solution is to rely on probabilistic metrics that estimate divergence with a certain degree of certainty. This relaxes the need to contact all replicas while still providing a relatively accurate measurement.
In this work we designed and implemented a solution to estimate the divergence of
data in eventually consistent data stores, that scale to many replicas by allowing clientside caching. Measuring the divergence when there is a large number of clients calls for the development of new algorithms that provide probabilistic guarantees. Additionally, unlike previous works, we intend to focus on measuring the divergence relative to a state that can lead to the violation of application invariants.Partially funded by project PTDC/EIA EIA/108963/2008 and by an ERC Starting Grant, Agreement Number 30773
Internal Control on the Private Sector
Trabalho realizado no âmbito da Unidade Curricular de Auditoria, do 4º Ano do Curso de Administração Militar (Exército e GNR), lecionada pelo Major de Administração Militar Artur Manuel Vieira Saraiva.Abstract
Companies in the Private Sector struggle every day to remain competitive and to have sustainable growth. So, they need to push their costs to a minimum and their revenue to a maximum, increasing their profit.
A big chunk of a company’s costs and losses may be due to errors or frauds, putting in jeopardy its own survivability. However, the implementation of an internal control system will effectively reduce the probabilities of frauds and errors to occur, by establishing preventive measures such as settling regular checks on the activities, assuring that every worker understands the policies and procedures, and analyzing periodically the accounting information to detect any deviations.N/
The Use Of Musical Cultural Heritage In The Eurovision Song Contest As A Commodity For National Gains
As means to not only safeguard Cultural Heritage, but also the possibility to create
a profitable and providing industry out of such assets, in this dissertation it is proposed
the conceptualization of two hypothesis, being: the commodification of cultural heritage,
mainly musical or through music, as well as the participation with said music in the
Eurovision Song Contest as a path to exposure, awareness and to consequentially attain
economic gains, both local and national.
In this dissertation , such topics are presented as follows: a general contextualization
of the Eurovision Song Contest, the contextualization and theorization of
Commodification in Economy and Culture, as well as the use of the Eurovision Song
Contest to promote Culture and the potential consequences, claims supported by public
enquire.

Planning the territory of São Paulo state, Brazil, in the Democratic Period: Carvalho Pinto’s Action Plan (1959 – 1963)
The postwar is marked, in Brazil, by initiatives of state planning and modern architecture that reach their apex in President Juscelino Kubitschek's Targets Plan (1956-1961) and its “synthesis-target”, Brasilia. Contemporary of these achievements is the Action Plan promoted by the governor of São Paulo state, Carvalho Pinto (1959-1963). Sharing the developmentist character that marks Brazilian state planning experience at the time, the Action Plan contains extensive physical targets aiming at the integration of the territory in the production process; relying on the broad participation of planners connected to the Économie et Humanisme Movement of the Dominican Father Louis-Joseph Lebret, the plan incorporates cojunctural analyses, methodologies and public policies that combine such investments in infrastructure and agricultural and industrial expansion with investments envisaging the "improvement of man's conditions". This paper focuses on this Paulista episode of state planning, considering the social scene of the period, providing an overview of its contents and evaluating its results. It makes notes on the economic and technological changes that occurred in the postwar period, and on the process of Brazilian industrialization in the 1950s and 1960s; it attends the conjunctural analyses of the Brazilian and Paulista economy made by the plan's authors, which reveal their perception of the economic and social process and inform their planning activity. It describes the planning process since its organization and constitution of its technical staff, to the strategies used in its elaboration. It provides a framework of the Action Plan that considers integrally: budget management techniques, funding sources, physical targets, public policies. It points out the political content of the plan, exploring its possibilities and limits, notably those related to the urban question and the housing question. It covers the political conditions that made planning almost an unanimity in those years, and the reasons that lead to non-institutionalization of the practice and to the discontinuation of the initiative, after the defeat in Carvalho Pinto's successor race and the subsequent outbreak of the civil-military coup (1964-1985). Thus, being considered in its broader dimensions, Carvalho Pinto’s Action Plan reveals the deep marks left by it in the São Paulo state territory
CSR coffee brand value: a retailers perspective
existentes.Fair trade, as an expression of corporate social responsibility, gained especial importance in
coffee business where end consumer allegedly give preference for brands endorsing fair trade.
However, brand choice is actually made by retailers who condition first-hand the end consumer
choices. This issue has been under researched, especially in Portugal, which is of relevance
especially if we take into account the fact that Portuguese coffee trade has considerable
expression.
This study is set to understand to which extent do retailers’ coffee brand choices reflect
attributed CSR preferences to end consumers while also comparing its explanative power
against non-CSR variables, such as price or product quality, in predicting overall brand equity.
Results with 88 coffee retailers show a clear association between retailer coffee brand choices
and attributed CSR brand preferences of end consumers. Also, that fair trade is a predictor of
overall coffee brand equity while non-CSR variables failed to be so.
Results are discussed at the light of extant theory and conclusions draw pertaining
O MINICURSO CORRIDA DE CAVALOS ADAPTADO PARA O FORMATO REMOTO: PONDERAÇÕES DE PROFESSORES E LICENCIANDOS
One of the first pandemic outcomes in Brazil was academic calendar suspension. Teachers and undergraduates saw themselves in need of thinking about alternatives to access and share the valued historically and socially accumulated knowledge. Once stopped by this situation, and by being aware of the existing demand by the Mathematics field for the production of knowledge related to Probability teaching, we adjusted and provided the workshop in remote format. It was made available on a communication platform at a time when such a format was not yet popular. We were guided by the following enquiry: how could participation in the workshop, and made possible by the cyberspace, echo on a group of teachers and undergraduates? Thus, the herein reported investigation is methodologically based on assumptions of a qualitative research aimed at analyzing the material resulting from audio and video recordings, based on participant speeches’ transcriptions, as well as on answers in the workshop evaluation form. The analysis was theoretically supported by concepts found in the Historical-Cultural tradition. It has shown that participation echoed differently on distinct participants - this finding shows lack of consensus among them about whether is feasible, or not, if one has in mind Mathematics remote classroom. It has also shown that such differences are related to non-appropriation of some artifacts by several participants. Nevertheless, we have noticed that participants started seeing possibilities of actions right at the beginning of the remote classes, and it has pointed towards the fact that this appropriation could actually come true.

The need people had to develop businesses together, allied to the intense historical
control and limitations on incorporation from governments over the last 5 centuries,
have led to the proliferation of “partnerships”. In time these will eventually be
mostly replaced, in Continental Europe, by limited liability companies. However, in
the United Kingdom, not only will they majorly keep as they will suffer mutations in
result from the need to adapt to evolving times. Corporate bodies lie at the very soul
of the tax transparency problematic. In fact, tax transparency firstly develops due to
the disregard of the “company” as a separate entity from its members. The radically
different way in which corporate entities developed in the United Kingdom and in
Continental Europe explains the present gap in tax transparency regimens between
the United Kingdom and Portugal. The tax transparency regimen is a system through
which a corporate body with or without legal personality is disregarded for tax
purposes being, instead, the profits allocated to the partners or members and taxed in
their own personal sphere. The types of entities to which this regimen applies greatly
differ between the Portuguese and the English regimen, as well as the purposes behind
the regimens and the motivations that lead the legal drafter to the design of such
systems. In Portugal the verification of a pre-set number of requisites leads to the
automatic application of the tax transparency regimen, potentially to every company,
only attaining to the qualities of the members or partners. On the contrary, in the
United Kingdom, tax transparency is only applicable to partnerships in an absolutely
objective way. This potential difference makes the United Kingdom partnerships
perfect investment structures and, consequently, attracts investment through the
avoidance of taxation in the country of registration/incorporation, regarding income
that is not connected to that territory. Conversely the Portuguese regimen not only
completely fails to achieve all the objectives that it was conceived to, as it presents
extremely unattractive and even an unfair for both residents and non-residents, hence
negatively preventing investment
