    Influence of Course Type on Upper Body Muscle Activity in Elite Cross-Country and Downhill Mountain Bikers During Off Road Downhill Cycling

    This study aimed to investigate upper body muscle activity using surface electromyography (sEMG) in elite cross-country (XCO) and downhill (DH) cyclists during off road descending and the influence of man-made (MM) and natural terrain (NT) descents on muscle activity. Twelve male elite mountain bikers (n=6 XCO; age 23 ± 4 yrs; stature 180.5 ± 5.6 cm; body mass 70.0 ± 6.4 kg and n=6 DH; age 20 ± 2 yrs; stature 178.8 ± 3.1 cm; body mass 75.0 ± 3.0 kg) took part in this study. sEMG were recorded from the left biceps brachii, triceps brachii, latissimus dorsi and brachioradialis muscles and expressed as a percentage of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (% MVIC). Both groups performed single runs on different MM and NT courses specific to their cycling modality. Significant differences in mean % MVIC were found between biceps brachii and triceps brachii (p=.016) and triceps brachii and latissimus dorsi (p=.046) during MM descents and between biceps brachii and triceps brachii (p=.008) and triceps brachii and latissimus dorsi (p=.031) during NT descents within the DH group. Significant differences in mean % MVIC were found between biceps brachii and brachioradialis (p=.022) for MM runs and between biceps brachii and brachioradialis (p=.013) for NT runs within the XCO group. Upper body muscle activity differs according to the type of downhill terrain, and appears to be specific to DH and XCO riders. Therefore, the discipline specific impact on muscle activation and the type of course terrain ridden should be considered when mountain bikers engage in upper body conditioning programmes

    Barriers to specialist palliative care in interstitial lung disease: a systematic review

    Background: Current guidelines recommend palliative care based on individual needs for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) are less likely to receive specialist palliative care services compared with patients with malignant disease. The aim of this review is to summarise recent studies addressing barriers to referring patients to specialist palliative care services. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Medline and Web of Science were reviewed to identify relevant publications. Studies were selected if they examined the frequency of specialist palliative care referral and/or addressed issues surrounding access to palliative care services for patients with ILD. Results: Ten studies with a total of 4073 people with ILD, 27 caregivers and 18 healthcare professionals were selected and analysed. Frequency of palliative care referrals ranged from 0% to 38%. Delay in palliative care referrals and end-of-life decisions, patients' fear of talking about the future, prognostic uncertainty and confusion about the roles of palliative care were identified as barriers to accessing palliative care services. Conclusion: Further research should concentrate on the early identification of patients who need specialist palliative care possibly with establishment of criteria to trigger referral ensuring that referrals are also based on patient's needs

    Excitation functions of proton induced nuclear reactions on natW up to 40 MeV

    Excitation functions for the production of the 181,182m,182g,183,184g,186Re and 183,184Ta radionuclides from proton bombardment on natural tungsten were measured using the stacked-foil activation technique for the proton energies up to 40 MeV. A new data set has been given for the formation of the investigated radionuclides. Results are in good agreement with the earlier reported experimental data and theoretical calculations based on the ALICE-IPPE code. The thick target integral yields were also deduced from the measured excitation functions. The deduced yield values were compared with the directly measured thick target yield (TTY), and found acceptable agreement. The investigated radionuclide 186Re has remarkable applications in the field of nuclear medicine, whereas the data of 183,184gRe and 183Ta have potential applications in thin layer activation analysis and biomedical tracer studies, respectively.Comment: 21papes, 14 figure

    Molecular orbitals and strong-field approximation

    V.I. Usachenko and S.-I. Chu [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 71}, 063410 (2005)] discuss the molecular strong-field approximation in the velocity gauge formulation and indicate that some of our earlier velocity gauge calculations are inaccurate. Here we comment on the results of Usachenko and Chu. First, we show that the molecular orbitals used by Usachenko and Chu do not have the correct symmetry, and second, that it is an oversimplification to describe the molecular orbitals in terms of just a single linear combination of two atomic orbitals. Finally, some values for the generalized Bessel function are given for comparison.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Investigation of risk-aware MDP and POMDP contingency management autonomy for UAS

    Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are being increasingly adopted for various applications. The risk UAS poses to people and property must be kept to acceptable levels. This paper proposes risk-aware contingency management autonomy to prevent an accident in the event of component malfunction, specifically propulsion unit failure and/or battery degradation. The proposed autonomy is modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) whose solution is a contingency management policy that appropriately executes emergency landing, flight termination or continuation of planned flight actions. Motivated by the potential for errors in fault/failure indicators, partial observability of the MDP state space is investigated. The performance of optimal policies is analyzed over varying observability conditions in a high-fidelity simulator. Results indicate that both partially observable MDP (POMDP) and maximum a posteriori MDP policies performed similarly over different state observability criteria, given the nearly deterministic state transition model

    Regulation of the Phonotactic Threshold of the Female Cricket, Acheta domesticus: Juvenile Hormone III, Allatectomy, L1 Auditory Neuron Thresholds and Environmental Factors

    Juvenile hormone III (JHIII), when applied to the abdomen of 1-day-old female Acheta domesticus (in quantities that would create JHIII titers in the hemolymph that were within the range measured in females of this species) caused a significant decrease in phonotactic thresholds (Fig. 1). Removal of the corpora allata from 5-day-old females with low phonotactic thresholds caused significantly increased phonotactic thresholds 2-5 days later. After a temporary increase (24 h) of, on average, about 25 dB, the phonotactic thresholds drop to about 10 dB above preallatectomy levels (Fig. 2), but remain significantly higher than controls. Application of JHIII to allatectomized females, with a mean increase in thresholds of 20 dB, results in significantly decreased thresholds (mean of about 20 dB) over the next 6 h (Fig. 3). Exposure to males 1 week before the imaginal molt causes the phonotactic thresholds of postimaginal females to drop 1-2 days significantly earlier than controls (Fig. 4). One- and 3-day-old females, phonotactically tested only once, exhibit lower thresholds in the early morning than they do in the late afternoon (Fig. 5). Five-day-old females do not exhibit such a diurnal rhythm. Phonotactically testing females more than once a day significantly influences their phonotactic thresholds (Figs. 6, 7). In 1-day-old females, with high (above 70 dB) phonotactic thresholds, the threshold of their L1 auditory interneurons can be 30 dB or more below their phonotactic threshold (Fig. 8). In females with phonotactic thresholds of 70 dB or lower, the L1 threshold is within 10 dB of their phonotactic threshold. Both JHIII and allatectomy influence phonotactic and L1 thresholds in a similar manner

    Rotational-State-Dependent Dispersion of Molecules by Pulsed Optical Standing Waves

    We report on the rotational-state-dependent, transverse acceleration of CS 2 molecules affected by pulsed optical standing waves. The steep gradient of the standing wave potential imparts far stronger dipole forces on the molecules than propagating pulses do. Moreover, large changes in the transverse velocities (i.e., up to 80 m/s) obtained with the standing waves are well reproduced in numerical simulations using the effective polarizability that depends on the molecular rotational states. Our analysis based on the rotational-state-dependent effective polarizability can therefore serve as a basis for developing a new technique of state selection for both polar and nonpolar molecules.open

    Tetra-methoxystilbene modulates ductal growth of the developing murine mammary gland

    Extensive data suggest that estradiol contributes to the development of breast cancer by acting as a mitogen and exerting direct genotoxic effects after enzymatic conversion to 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2) via cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1). The mammary gland, ovary, and uterus all express CYP1B1. Overexpression of this enzyme has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and blockade might reduce this carcinogenic effect. For this reason, we conducted systematic in vitro and in vivo studies of a CYP1B1 inhibitor, TMS (2,3',4,5'-tetramethoxystilbene). We found that TMS blocked the enzymatic conversion of radiolabeled estradiol to both 2-hydroxyestradiol (2-OHE2) and 4-OHE2, but did not inhibit Cyp1b1 message formation. In vivo studies using mass spectrometry showed that TMS inhibited formation of 2-OHE2 and 4-OHE2 and the resulting estrogen-DNA adducts. To examine its biologic actions in vivo, we investigated whether TMS could block the hyperplastic changes that occur in the developing breast of aromatase-transfected mice. We found that TMS induced a significant reduction of ductal structures in mice less than 6 months in age. In older mice, no reduction in breast morphology occurred. These latter studies uncovered unexpected estrogen agonistic actions of TMS at high doses, including a paradoxical stimulation of breast ductal structures and the endometrium. These studies suggest that the enzyme inhibitory properties of TMS, as well as the effects on developing breast, could implicate a role for TMS in breast cancer prevention, but only in low doses and on developing breast
