Enterprise IT Governance: Back to Basics

    Get PDF
Enterprise IT (EIT) governance is an emerging and convoluted area in Information Technology (IT). As a subset, EIT governance operates under defined boundaries and set of rules inherited from the enterprise governance. There are a number of definitions that define EIT governance concepts. These concepts are linked in an intricate web of EIT governance. These concepts and related definitions have emerged over a period of time either through implementation models or IT events. This marks the need for a comprehensive review and synthesis of governance concepts in the modern context of always changing IT landscape. This research applied the well-known Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. 4 different databases are used to find relevant research papers. Based on available definitions, evidence and analysis, it is found that four concepts are used more than any other: decision, organization, process and goal. This study result provides a consolidated set of key concepts, their relationships and trends, which can be used as a knowledge-base by researchers and practitioners’ for further work in this important area of EIT governance

Pulmonary bulla in children represent interesting entities. Mostly congenital bronchopulmonary foregut malformations and acquired cysts like pneumatocoeles have also been described. We present a case of a 12 1/2 years old girl with acute onset respiratory distress symptoms harbouring a huge pulmonary cyst exhibiting mass effects, resulting in mediastinal deviation. Following initial workup, cyst excision was carried out which revealed presence of fungal hyphae that was susceptible to Fluconazole therapy post operatively. The case points out how a pulmonary cyst can present in older children with symptoms of respiratory distress and mass effects

Role of Global Value Chains and Exchange Rate: An Empirical Examination in case of Pakistan

Pakistan’s economy has a history of facing continuous external sector shocks that often resulted in large exchange rate depreciations. Whether these depreciations have supported growth in exports from Pakistan or do more harm than providing any benefit to the economy is always a matter of domestic debate with inconclusive results. One major apprehension sighted in this regard is the role of intermediate imported goods that become expensive after depreciations and thus offset any competitive gains expected to be achieved from the exchange rate adjustment. To empirically investigate this argument, we evaluate that whether and how the Global Value Chains (GVCs) participation, i.e. the export and import of intermediate goods, affects the REER elasticity for exports in Pakistan using input-output model techniques. We find that, like elsewhere, REER elasticity of exports has declined in Pakistan overtime. However, only around 16 percent of this decline in REER elasticity is explained by the role of GVCs participation. One major reason for this lower impact could be coming from the fact that, unlike other emerging economies and in contrast to general perception, role of backward participation (i.e. use of imported inputs to produce exports) is one of the lowest in Pakistan. While the results still signify the role of PKR exchange rate in external adjustment, the low backward participation is not helping the exports to become competitive overtime

Objective: Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the standard of care in clinically negative axilla in breast cancer patients for which frozen section (FS) is routinely performed intraoperatively. The objective of this study was to justify the use of FS in terms of number of tests performed and their impact on decision-making and cost saving. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our prospectively maintained data from January 2014 to January 2018 for intraoperative FS in upfront breast conservation surgery patients. Results: A total of 357 patients were studied. All were female. Median age was 50 years (24–84). Mean tumour size was 29.11 mm. Numbers of sentinel lymph nodes identified were 1 in 50 (14.2%) patients, 2 in 121 (33.89%) patients and ≥3 in 186 (52%) patients. Number of positive sentinel lymph nodes was 0 in 264 (73.9%) patients, 1 in 62 (17.4%) patients, 2 in 20 (5.6%) patients and ≥3 in 11 (3.08%) patients. Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) was offered to 30 (8.4%) patients as per the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Z0011. The results for ALND showed that only 8 (2.3%) out of 30 patients had positive nodes identified in the additional axillary nodes dissected. Sensitivity of FS was 97% and specificity was 98.86%. False-negative rate was 3.22%. Conclusion: Intraoperative FS can be safely omitted in early breast cancer patients undergoing upfront breast conservation cancer surgery due to high sensitivity and specificity leading to low false-negative rates. ALND can be performed as a second operation as warranted only in a minority of patients. Key words: American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Z0011 trial, axillary lymph node dissection, intraoperative frozen section, sentinel lymph node biops

The interactive impact of straw mulch and biochar application positively enhanced the growth indexes of maize (Zea mays L.) crop

A two-year experiment was carried out at Shenyang Agricultural University’s research field area in China to evaluate the impact of the combined application of straw mulch (0 and 8 t ha−1) and biochar (0, 4, 12, and 36 t ha−1) on the morphological traits and grain development of rainfed maize during 2018 and 2019. The results showed that straw mulch and different biochar application rates significantly impacted the maize growth index. Compared to non-biochar-treated soils, the introduction of straw mulch improved plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index (LAI), leaves, stem, root, and crop growth rate (CGR), and dry weight of rainfed maize crop. The highest plant height, stem diameter, LAI, leaves, stem, root growth rate, CGR, and dry weight of rainfed maize crop were reported when soil was treated with a higher rate of biochar (36 t ha−1). Biochar increased grain filling rate while decreasing grain filling duration in rainfed maize crops. Our results indicate that straw mulch and biochar-based soil management strategies can improve the rainfed maize growth with the environmental benefits of global warming mitigation. However, due to the wide range of biochar properties, the interactions between straw mulch and biochar should be given special consideration in the maize cropping system

A Novel Feature Extraction and Fault Detection Technique for the Intelligent Fault Identification of Water Pump Bearings

    Get PDF
The reliable and cost-effective condition monitoring of the bearings installed in water pumps is a real challenge in the industry. This paper presents a novel strong feature selection and extraction algorithm (SFSEA) to extract fault-related features from the instantaneous power spectrum (IPS). The three features extracted from the IPS using the SFSEA are fed to an extreme gradient boosting (XBG) classifier to reliably detect and classify the minor bearing faults. The experiments performed on a lab-scale test setup demonstrated classification accuracy up to 100%, which is better than the previously reported fault classification accuracies and indicates the effectiveness of the proposed method

Background: Leptin hormone, encoded by leptin (LEP) gene is involved in many biological and physiological processes in the body. Polymorphism in LEP gene has been observed and correlated with a variety of reproductive and productive traits in several sheep breeds worldwide, but its role has not been much studied in local sheep breeds of Pakistan. The present study was conducted to analyze polymorphism in LEP gene in Lohi breed of sheep. Methods: Subsequent to statistical analysis (generalized linear model), 18 animals were selected randomly from the flock for blood samples collection followed by DNA extraction, amplification using PCR prior to sequencing. The amplified product of exon 2 and partial intron 2 regions of LEP gene was 268bp.Results: Molecular analysis showed a heterozygous condition i.e. C>Y at position 15 and 18 in exon 2. The data on average daily weight gain (ADG) from birthday to 90 days were used for association study, while environmental effects were minimized by means of generalized linear model. Association of polymorphisms in LEP gene with ADG did not yield any significant results. Conclusion: In conclusion, analysis of LEP gene sequence verified the existence of genetic changes in Lohi sheep. Further investigations are needed to find variations that might be linked with traits of economic importance for upcoming breeding program sand marker-assisted selection. Keywords: DNA; Exon 2; LEP; PCR; Loh

Can bacterial endophytes be used as a promising bio-inoculant for the mitigation of salinity stress in crop plants? : a global meta-analysis of the last decade (2011-2020)

Soil salinity is a major problem affecting crop production worldwide. Lately, there have been great research efforts in increasing the salt tolerance of plants through the inoculation of plant growth-promoting endophytic bacteria. However, their ability to promote plant growth under no-stress and salinity-stress conditions remains largely uncertain. Here, we carried out a global meta-analysis to quantify the plant growth-promoting effects (improvement of morphological attributes, photosynthetic capacity, antioxidative ability, and ion homeostasis) of endophytic bacteria in plants under no-stress and salinity-stress conditions. In addition, we elucidated the underlying mechanisms of growth promotion in salt-sensitive (SS) and salt-tolerant (ST) plants derived from the interaction with endophytic bacteria under no-stress and salinity-stress conditions. Specifically, this work encompassed 42 peer-reviewed articles, a total of 77 experiments, and 24 different bacterial genera. On average, endophytic bacterial inoculation increased morphological parameters. Moreover, the effect of endophytic bacteria on the total dry biomass, number of leaves, root length, shoot length, and germination rate was generally greater under salinity-stress conditions than no-stress conditions. On a physiological level, the relative better performance of the bacterial inoculants under the salinity-stress condition was associated with the increase in total chlorophyll and chlorophyll-b, as well as with the decrease of 1-aminocylopropane-1-carboxylate concentration. Moreover, under the salinity-stress condition, bacterial inoculation conferred a significantly higher increase in root K+ concentration and decrease in leaf Na+ concentration than under the no-stress condition. In SS plants, bacterial inoculation induced a higher increase in chlorophyll-b and superoxide dismutase activity, as well as a higher decrease in abscisic acid content, than in ST plants. Under salinity-stress, endophytic bacterial inoculation increased root K+ concentration in both SS and ST plants but decreased root Na+ concentration only in ST plants. Overall, this meta-analysis suggests that endophytic bacterial inoculation is beneficial under both no salinity-stress and salinity-stress conditions, but the magnitude of benefit is definitely higher under salinity-stress conditions and varies with the salt tolerance level of plants
