Identifying the origin of delayed electroluminescence in a polariton organic light-emitting diode
Modifying the energy landscape of existing molecular emitters is an
attractive challenge with favourable outcomes in chemistry and organic
optoelectronic research. It has recently been explored through strong
light-matter coupling studies where the organic emitters were placed in an
optical cavity. Nonetheless, a debate revolves around whether the observed
change in the material properties represents novel coupled system dynamics or
the unmasking of pre-existing material properties induced by light-matter
interactions. Here, for the first time, we examined the effect of strong
coupling in polariton organic light-emitting diodes via time-resolved
electroluminescence studies. We accompanied our experimental analysis with
theoretical fits using a model of coupled rate equations accounting for all
major mechanisms that can result in delayed electroluminescence in organic
emitters. We found that in our devices the delayed electroluminescence was
dominated by emission from trapped charges and this mechanism remained

A CAE approach for the stress analysis of gear models by 3D digital photoelasticity
The use of numerical and experimental methods to determine the stress field of mechanical components is well known. In particular, 3D photoelasticity can be considered the only experimental technique for the complete stress state evaluation of 3D components. The advent of rapid prototyping techniques has allowed the manufacturing of complex models in a matter of hours by using birifrangent materials. The present paper is focused on the description of a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) approach which combines Finite Element (FE) simulations and automatic photoelastic investigations for the stress analysis of face gear drives, made by stereolithography. Computer Aided Design (CAD) geometries, used to manufacture the stereolithographic models, are directly used to perform FE analyses, thus allowing the stress analysis process to become simpler and easier. The substantial agreement observed between experimental and numerical results proved the potentialities of the adopted approach and the usefulness of FE simulations to optimize photoelastic analyses through cost- and time-effective experiments even for complex 3D shapes
Chargeâ Transport Properties of F6TNAPâ Based Chargeâ Transfer Cocrystals
The crystal structures of the chargeâ transfer (CT) cocrystals formed by the à â electron acceptor 1,3,4,5,7,8â hexafluoroâ 11,11,12,12â tetracyanonaphthoâ 2,6â quinodimethane (F6TNAP) with the planar à â electronâ donor molecules triphenylene (TP), benzo[b]benzo[4,5]thieno[2,3â d]thiophene (BTBT), benzo[1,2â b:4,5â bâ ²]dithiophene (BDT), pyrene (PY), anthracene (ANT), and carbazole (CBZ) have been determined using singleâ crystal Xâ ray diffraction (SCXRD), along with those of two polymorphs of F6TNAP. All six cocrystals exhibit 1:1 donor/acceptor stoichiometry and adopt mixedâ stacking motifs. Cocrystals based on BTBT and CBZ à â electron donor molecules exhibit brickwork packing, while the other four CT cocrystals show herringboneâ type crystal packing. Infrared spectroscopy, molecular geometries determined by SCXRD, and electronic structure calculations indicate that the extent of groundâ state CT in each cocrystal is small. Density functional theory calculations predict large conduction bandwidths and, consequently, low effective masses for electrons for all six CT cocrystals, while the TPâ , BDTâ , and PYâ based cocrystals are also predicted to have large valence bandwidths and low effective masses for holes. Chargeâ carrier mobility values are obtained from spaceâ charge limited current (SCLC) measurements and fieldâ effect transistor measurements, with values exceeding 1 cm2 Vâ 1 s1 being estimated from SCLC measurements for BTBT:F6TNAP and CBZ:F6TNAP cocrystals.Structural, electronic band structure, and electrical properties of a series of chargeâ transfer cocrystals based on F6TNAP and six planar donors are presented. Density functional theory calculations afford large conduction bandwidths and low effective masses for all six cocrystals. Snakebite and its socio-economic impact on the rural population of Tamil Nadu, India
BACKGROUND:
Snakebite represents a significant health issue worldwide, affecting several million people each year with as many as 95,000 deaths. India is considered to be the country most affected, but much remains unknown about snakebite incidence in this country, its socio-economic impact and how snakebite management could be improved.
METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:
We conducted a study within rural villages in Tamil Nadu, India, which combines a household survey (28,494 people) of snakebite incidence with a more detailed survey of victims in order to understand the health and socio-economic effects of the bite, the treatments obtained and their views about future improvements. Our survey suggests that snakebite incidence is higher than previously reported. 3.9% of those surveyed had suffered from snakebite and the number of deaths corresponds to 0.45% of the population. The socio-economic impact of this is very considerable in terms of the treatment costs and the long-term effects on the health and ability of survivors to work. To reduce this, the victims recommended improvements to the accessibility and affordability of antivenom treatment.
CONCLUSIONS:
Snakebite has a considerable and disproportionate impact on rural populations, particularly in South Asia. This study provides an incentive for researchers and the public to work together to reduce the incidence and improve the outcomes for snake bite victims and their families
The Burden of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Among Adolescents and Young Adults in 24 Western European Countries, 1990â2019:Results From the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
Objectives: As little is known about the burden of type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in adolescents in Western Europe (WE), we aimed to explore their epidemiology among 10â24Â year-olds. Methods: Estimates were retrieved from the Global Burden of Diseases Study (GBD) 2019. We reported counts, rates per 100,000 population, and percentage changes from 1990 to 2019 for prevalence, incidence and years lived with disability (YLDs) of T1DM and T2DM, and the burden of T2DM in YLDs attributable to high body mass index (HBMI), for 24 WE countries. Results: In 2019, prevalence and disability estimates were higher for T1DM than T2DM among 10â24Â years old adolescents in WE. However, T2DM showed a greater increase in prevalence and disability than T1DM in the 30Â years observation period in all WE countries. Prevalence increased with age, while only minor differences were observed between sexes. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the substantial burden posed by DM in WE among adolescents. Health system responses are needed for transition services, data collection systems, education, and obesity prevention.</p
Global, regional, and national burden of other musculoskeletal disorders, 1990â2020, and projections to 2050: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021
Background
Musculoskeletal disorders include more than 150 different conditions affecting joints, muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and the spine. To capture all health loss from death and disability due to musculoskeletal disorders, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) includes a residual musculoskeletal category for conditions other than osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, low back pain, and neck pain. This category is called other musculoskeletal disorders and includes, for example, systemic lupus erythematosus and spondylopathies. We provide updated estimates of the prevalence, mortality, and disability attributable to other musculoskeletal disorders and forecasted prevalence to 2050.
Methods
Prevalence of other musculoskeletal disorders was estimated in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020 using data from 68 sources across 23 countries from which subtraction of cases of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, neck pain, and gout from the total number of cases of musculoskeletal disorders was possible. Data were analysed with Bayesian meta-regression models to estimate prevalence by year, age, sex, and location. Years lived with disability (YLDs) were estimated from prevalence and disability weights. Mortality attributed to other musculoskeletal disorders was estimated using vital registration data. Prevalence was forecast to 2050 by regressing prevalence estimates from 1990 to 2020 with Socio-demographic Index as a predictor, then multiplying by population forecasts.
Findings
Globally, 494 million (95% uncertainty interval 431â564) people had other musculoskeletal disorders in 2020, an increase of 123¡4% (116¡9â129¡3) in total cases from 221 million (192â253) in 1990. Cases of other musculoskeletal disorders are projected to increase by 115% (107â124) from 2020 to 2050, to an estimated 1060 million (95% UI 964â1170) prevalent cases in 2050; most regions were projected to have at least a 50% increase in cases between 2020 and 2050. The global age-standardised prevalence of other musculoskeletal disorders was 47¡4% (44¡9â49¡4) higher in females than in males and increased with age to a peak at 65â69 years in male and female sexes. In 2020, other musculoskeletal disorders was the sixth ranked cause of YLDs globally (42¡7 million [29¡4â60¡0]) and was associated with 83â100 deaths (73â600â91â600).
Interpretation
Other musculoskeletal disorders were responsible for a large number of global YLDs in 2020. Until individual conditions and risk factors are more explicitly quantified, policy responses to this burden remain a challenge. Temporal trends and geographical differences in estimates of non-fatal disease burden should not be overinterpreted as they are based on sparse, low-quality data.publishedVersio

One-year clinical outcome of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Insights from KERALA-AF registry.
BackgroundWe report patient characteristics, treatment pattern and one-year clinical outcome of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) from Kerala, India. This cohort forms part of Kerala Atrial Fibrillation (KERALA-AF) registry which is an ongoing large prospective study.MethodsKERALA-AF registry collected data of adults with previously or newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF) during April 2016 to April 2017. A total of 3421 patients were recruited from 53 hospitals across Kerala state. We analysed one-year follow-up outcome of 2507 patients with NVAF.ResultsMean age at recruitment was 67.2 years (range 18-98) and 54.8% were males. Main co-morbidities were hypertension (61.2%), hyperlipidaemia (46.2%) and diabetes mellitus (37.2%). Major co-existing diseases were chronic kidney disease (42.1%), coronary artery disease (41.6%), and chronic heart failure (26.4%). Mean CHA2DS2-VASc score was 3.18 (SD ¹ 1.7) and HAS-BLED score, 1.84 (SD ¹ 1.3). At baseline, use of oral anticoagulants (OAC) was 38.6% and antiplatelets 32.7%. On one-month follow-up use of OAC increased to 65.8% and antiplatelets to 48.3%. One-year all-cause mortality was 16.48 and hospitalization 20.65 per 100 person years. The main causes of death were cardiovascular (75.0%), stroke (13.1%) and others (11.9%). The major causes of hospitalizations were acute coronary syndrome (35.0%), followed by arrhythmia (29.5%) and heart failure (8.4%).ConclusionsDespite high risk profile of patients in this registry, use of OAC was suboptimal, whereas antiplatelets were used in nearly half of patients.
