    Some Revised Observational Constraints on the Formation and Evolution of the Galactic Disk

    A set of 76 open clusters with abundances based upon DDO photometry and/or moderate dispersion spectroscopy has been transformed to a common [Fe/H] scale and used to study the local structure and evolution of the galactic disk. The metallicity distribution of clusters with R_GC is best described by two distinct zones. Between R_GC = 6.5 and 10 kpc, the distribution has a mean [Fe/H] = 0.0 and a dispersion of 0.1 dex; there is only weak evidence for a shallow abundance gradient over this distance range. Beyond R_GC = 10 kpc, the metallicity distribution has a dispersion between 0.10 and 0.15 dex, but with a mean [Fe/H] = -0.3, implying a sharp discontinuity at R_GC = 10 kpc. After correcting for the discontinuity, no evidence is found for a gradient perpendicular to the plane. Adopting the clusters interior to 10 kpc as a representative sample of the galactic disk over the last 7 Gyr, the cluster metallicity range is found to be about half that of the field stars. When coupled with the discontinuity in the galactocentric gradient, the discrepancy in the metallicity distribution is interpreted as an indication of significant diffusion of field stars into the solar neighborhood from beyond 10 kpc. These results imply that the sun is NOT atypical of the stars formed in the solar circle 4.6 Gyr ago. It is suggested that the discontinuity reflects the edge of the initial galactic disk as defined by the disk globular cluster system and the so-called thick disk; the initial offset in [Fe/H] created by the differences in the chemical history on either side of the discontinuity has carried through to the current stage of galactic evolution. If correct, diffusion coupled with the absence of an abundance gradient could make the separation of field stars on the basis of galactocentric origin difficult.Comment: 41 pages, 9 figure files, LaTex.     Robust Positioning in the Presence of Multipath and NLOS GNSS Signals

    GNSS signals can be blocked and reflected by nearby objects, such as buildings, walls, and vehicles. They can also be reflected by the ground and by water. These effects are the dominant source of GNSS positioning errors in dense urban environments, though they can have an impact almost anywhere. Non- line-of-sight (NLOS) reception occurs when the direct path from the transmitter to the receiver is blocked and signals are received only via a reflected path. Multipath interference occurs, as the name suggests, when a signal is received via multiple paths. This can be via the direct path and one or more reflected paths, or it can be via multiple reflected paths. As their error characteristics are different, NLOS and multipath interference typically require different mitigation techniques, though some techniques are applicable to both. Antenna design and advanced receiver signal processing techniques can substantially reduce multipath errors. Unless an antenna array is used, NLOS reception has to be detected using the receiver's ranging and carrier-power-to-noise-density ratio (C/N0) measurements and mitigated within the positioning algorithm. Some NLOS mitigation techniques can also be used to combat severe multipath interference. Multipath interference, but not NLOS reception, can also be mitigated by comparing or combining code and carrier measurements, comparing ranging and C/N0 measurements from signals on different frequencies, and analyzing the time evolution of the ranging and C/N0 measurements

    NLO QCD procedure of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data analysis with respect to the light quark polarized sea

    The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process is considered. A theoretical procedure is proposed allowing the direct extraction from the SIDIS data of the first moments of the polarized valence distributions and of the first moment difference of the light sea quark polarized distributions in the next to leading QCD order. The validity of the procedure is confirmed by the respective simulations

    Collisional Transfer of Population and Orientation in NaK

    We report current work to study transfer of population and orientation in collisions of NaK molecules with argon and potassium atoms using polarization labeling (PL) and laser- induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy. In the PL experiment, a circularly polarized pump laser excites a specific NaK A1Σ +(v 0=16, J 0 ) ← X1Σ +(v 00=0, J 0 ± 1) transition, creating an orientation (non-uniform MJ0 level distribution) in both levels. The linearly polarized probe laser is scanned over various 31Π(v, J 0±1) ← A1Σ +(v 0=16, J 0 ) transitions. The probe laser passes through a crossed linear polarizer before detection, and signal is recorded if the probe laser polarization has been modified by the vapor (which occurs when it comes into resonance with an oriented level). Using both spectroscopic methods, analysis of weak collisional satellite lines adjacent to these directly populated lines, as a function of argon buffer gas pressure and cell temperature, allows us to discern separately the effects collisions with argon atoms and potassium atoms have on the population and orientation of the molecule. In addition, code has been written which provides a theoretical analysis of the process, through a solution of the density matrix equations of motion for the system

If we can reduce the core linking functionality to some common structure, which allows us to consider hypertext systems within a common model, we could identify what, if anything, distinguishes hypertext systems from each other. This paper offers such a common structure, showing the conceptual similarities between each of these systems and paradigms

In addition to strong direct transitions (J 0 = J), we also observe weak collisional satellite lines (J 0 = J ±n with n = 1, 2, 3, ...) indicating that orientation is transferred to adjacent rotational levels during a collision. An LIF experiment (with linear polarized pump and probe beams) gives information on the collisional transfer of population. From these data, cross sections for both processes can be determined. We experimentally distinguish collisions of NaK with argon atoms from collisions with alkali atoms

    The role of Cahn and Sivers effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering

    The role of intrinsic \bfk_\perp in inclusive and semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering processes (phX\ell p \to \ell h X) is studied with exact kinematics within QCD parton model at leading order; the dependence of the unpolarized cross section on the azimuthal angle between the leptonic and the hadron production planes (Cahn effect) is compared with data and used to estimate the average values of kk_\perp both in quark distribution and fragmentation functions. The resulting picture is applied to the description of the weighted single spin asymmetry AUTsin(ϕπϕS)A_{UT}^{\sin(\phi_\pi - \phi_S)} recently measured by the HERMES collaboration at DESY; this allows to extract some simple models for the quark Sivers functions. These are compared with the Sivers functions which succeed in describing the data on transverse single spin asymmetries in \pup p \to \pi X processes; the two sets of functions are not inconsistent. The extracted Sivers functions give predictions for the COMPASS measurement of AUTsin(ϕπϕS)A_{UT}^{\sin(\phi_\pi - \phi_S)} in agreement with recent preliminary data, while their contribution to HERMES AULsinϕπA_{UL}^{\sin\phi_\pi} is computed and found to be small. Predictions for AUTsin(ϕKϕS)A_{UT}^{\sin(\phi_K - \phi_S)} for kaon production at HERMES are also given.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, revtex, version published in PRD, one figure, comments and references adde
