    The DISCOVER codec: Architecture, Techniques and Evaluation

    Distributed Video Coding is becoming more and more popular among the research community, because of its interesting theoretical contributions and because there are still many open problems waiting to be solved. This paper introduces the codec architecture and the associated tools adopted by DISCOVER (DIStributed COding for Video sERvices), a European project which has been devoted to the advancement of Distributed Video Coding for two years. Along with the general description and pointers to references with more detailed information, this paper also presents some of the results obtained with the DISCOVER codec. An extended performance analysis and the codec’s executable file are both publicly available on the project’s web site www.discoverdvc.org

    Amb la present comunicació volem fer palès el fet que seccions departamentals de caràcter eminentment transversal com la nostra, poden jugar un paper clau alhora que integrador en temes com el de la present jornada. Cal tenir en compte que la nostra secció té encarregades assignatures de caràcter integrador com ara Instal•lacions i Construcció Industrial, Oficina Tècnica i Disseny Gràfic Avançat, mitjançant les que els nostres estudiants adquireixen tot els coneixements tècnics i teòrics, alhora que aprenen mitjançant casos o exemples. És amb aquesta última part, amb la que l’alumnat més gaudeix i treballa, prenent i entenent decisions de disseny, triant d’entre les millors tècniques disponibles (MTDs) per a la realització d’una instal•lació, projecte o mecanisme. A més, i en aquesta mateixa línia integradora, cada any oferim força projectes finals de carrera (PFCs) cada vegada més sensibilitzats amb l’eficiència energètica, el respecte al medi ambient i el compromís social. Finalitzem el present text amb alguns exemples de treballs fets per l’alumnat

    Role of quantum coherence in chromophoric energy transport

    The role of quantum coherence and the environment in the dynamics of excitation energy transfer is not fully understood. In this work, we introduce the concept of dynamical contributions of various physical processes to the energy transfer efficiency. We develop two complementary approaches, based on a Green's function method and energy transfer susceptibilities, and quantify the importance of the Hamiltonian evolution, phonon-induced decoherence, and spatial relaxation pathways. We investigate the Fenna-Matthews-Olson protein complex, where we find a contribution of coherent dynamics of about 10% and of relaxation of 80%.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, included static disorder, correlated environmen

    Targeted sequencing of lung function loci in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cases and controls

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide; smoking is the main risk factor for COPD, but genetic factors are also relevant contributors. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of the lung function measures used in the diagnosis of COPD have identified a number of loci, however association signals are often broad and collectively these loci only explain a small proportion of the heritability. In order to examine the association with COPD risk of genetic variants down to low allele frequencies, to aid fine-mapping of association signals and to explain more of the missing heritability, we undertook a targeted sequencing study in 300 COPD cases and 300 smoking controls for 26 loci previously reported to be associated with lung function. We used a pooled sequencing approach, with 12 pools of 25 individuals each, enabling high depth (30x) coverage per sample to be achieved. This pooled design maximised sample size and therefore power, but led to challenges during variant-calling since sequencing error rates and minor allele frequencies for rare variants can be very similar. For this reason we employed a rigorous quality control pipeline for variant detection which included the use of 3 independent calling algorithms. In order to avoid false positive associations we also developed tests to detect variants with potential batch effects and removed them before undertaking association testing. We tested for the effects of single variants and the combined effect of rare variants within a locus. We followed up the top signals with data available (only 67% of collapsing methods signals) in 4,249 COPD cases and 11,916 smoking controls from UK Biobank. We provide suggestive evidence for the combined effect of rare variants on COPD risk in TNXB and in sliding windows within MECOM and upstream of HHIP. These findings can lead to an improved understanding of the molecular pathways involved in the development of COPD

    Vesicle miR-195 derived from endothelial cells inhibits expression of serotonin transporter in vessel smooth muscle cells

    Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) has been shown to be essential in lots of physiological and pathological processes. It is well known that 5-HT and 5-HT transporter (5-HTT) play important roles in the pulmonary artery in pulmonary hypertension. However, little is known about the function of 5-HTT in other arteries. In this study we found that the expression of 5-HTT was elevated in injured carotid arteries and over-expression of 5-HTT induced proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs); however, this phenotype could be reversed by knocking-down of 5-HTT or endothelial cells conditional medium (EC-CM). A 5-HTT inhibitor, fluoxetine, treated animals also exhibited reduced restenosis after injury. We identified that miR-195 was packaged in the extracellular vesicles from EC-CM. We further confirmed that extracellular vesicles could transfer miR-195 from ECs to SMCs to inhibit the expression of 5-HTT in SMCs and the proliferation of SMCs. These results provide the first evidence that ECs communicate with SMCs via micro-RNA195 in the regulation of the proliferation of SMCs through 5-HTT, which will contribute to a better understanding of communications between ECs and SMCs via micro-RNA. Our findings suggest a potential target for the control of vessel restenosis

    Genetic loci associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap with loci for lung function and pulmonary fibrosis.

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. We performed a genetic association study in 15,256 cases and 47,936 controls, with replication of select top results (P < 5 × 10(-6)) in 9,498 cases and 9,748 controls. In the combined meta-analysis, we identified 22 loci associated at genome-wide significance, including 13 new associations with COPD. Nine of these 13 loci have been associated with lung function in general population samples, while 4 (EEFSEC, DSP, MTCL1, and SFTPD) are new. We noted two loci shared with pulmonary fibrosis (FAM13A and DSP) but that had opposite risk alleles for COPD. None of our loci overlapped with genome-wide associations for asthma, although one locus has been implicated in joint susceptibility to asthma and obesity. We also identified genetic correlation between COPD and asthma. Our findings highlight new loci associated with COPD, demonstrate the importance of specific loci associated with lung function to COPD, and identify potential regions of genetic overlap between COPD and other respiratory diseases
