    Spatial distribution of nematodes at organic and conventional crop fields in Cape Coast, Ghana

    Globally, plant-parasitic nematodes cause large reductions in crop yields and quality. The conditions prevalent in organic crop production fields can favour or inhibit nematode build-up. An overview of the spatial distribution of nematodes can help the design of targeted, site-specific management strategies. This paper assessed and compared the spatial distribution of nematode population in an organic crop field and a conventional crop field using Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) and ordinary Kriging spatial interpolation techniques. The results show that nematode population is higher on the organic field compared to the conventional crop field. Spatial distribution of nematode population showed a north-south gradient in the organic field but small patches of large population in the conventional field. The two interpolation methods did not show substantial differences in mapping the spatial distribution of the nematode population. It is concluded that nematode control strategies employed on the organic field might be less effective than expected. Both inverse distance weighted and ordinary kriging can be used to map the spatial distribution of nematodes under similar conditions and in a non-complex terrain

This article considers the political and intellectual sources - both historical and contemporary - of the converging technologies agenda.     The employers’ priorities : vocational skills and capabilities for management accountants

    There has been increasing pressure on the providers of higher education to align courses with the needs of employers. Surveys have documented the importance of developing a broad range of vocational skills. However, priorities must be established, based on the demands of the workplace, within this identified skills gap. The first section of this paper identifies the need for the development of vocational skills in general, and then specifically in the area of management accounting. The second section presents the views of employers of management accountants on the relative importance of a specified set of vocational skills, and the level of these skills exhibited by graduates and recently qualified management accountants. These measures are then combined in a ‘weighted importance indicator’ to indicate the skills that are most in need of development

    The increasing integration of technology into our lives has created unprecedented volumes of data on society's everyday behaviour. Such data opens up exciting new opportunities to work towards a quantitative understanding of our complex social systems, within the realms of a new discipline known as Computational Social Science. Against a background of financial crises, riots and international epidemics, the urgent need for a greater comprehension of the complexity of our interconnected global society and an ability to apply such insights in policy decisions is clear.     Mid-rapidity anti-proton to proton ratio from Au+Au collisions at sNN=130 \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130 GeV

    We report results on the ratio of mid-rapidity anti-proton to proton yields in Au+Au collisions at \rts = 130 GeV per nucleon pair as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Within the rapidity and transverse momentum range of y<0.5|y|<0.5 and 0.4 <pt<<p_t< 1.0 GeV/cc, the ratio is essentially independent of either transverse momentum or rapidity, with an average of 0.65±0.01(stat.)±0.07(syst.)0.65\pm 0.01_{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.07_{\rm (syst.)} for minimum bias collisions. Within errors, no strong centrality dependence is observed. The results indicate that at this RHIC energy, although the pp-\pb pair production becomes important at mid-rapidity, a significant excess of baryons over anti-baryons is still present.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phys.
