Linac modeling for external beam radiotherapy quality assurance using a dedicated 2D pixelated detector
International audienceQuality assurance is a key issue in intensity modulated radiotherapy. Errors can occur in the dose delivery process induces significant differences between the planned treatment and the delivered one. In this context, the Medical Application Physics group of the LPSC is developing TraDeRa (Transparent Detector for Radiotherapy), a 2D pixelated matrix of ionization chambers located upstream to the patient. The signal map obtained with TraDeRa has to be processed to provide medical observables to quantify the quality of the treatment delivery. This relies on accurate Monte Carlo simulations benchmarked with measurements performed under a linear accelerator (Linac). The work described in this paper lies in the optimization of the Linac head simulation and the development of an innovative Monte Carlo/measurements comparison method to perform an accurate enough model of the X-ray production device. An optimized parametrization of the particles transport allowed an increase of the simulation efficiency by a factor 3. The characteristics of an electron beam of a reference Linac were matched with the simulation results by using dose deposition of the created X-ray beam in a water tank. Two parameters are particularly critical: the nominal energy of the electrons and the radial distribution of impact on the target. The innovative method was able to provide within minutes those two parameters for any Linac, achieving, for example, a 10 keV precision on the energy determination for a 6 MV operating Linac
Expert consensus document: Semantics in active surveillance for men with localized prostate cancer — results of a modified Delphi consensus procedure
Active surveillance (AS) is broadly described as a management option for men with low-risk prostate cancer, but semantic heterogeneity exists in both the literature and in guidelines. To address this issue, a panel of leading prostate cancer specialists in the field of AS participated in a consensus-forming project using a modified Delphi method to reach international consensus on definitions of terms related to this management option. An iterative three-round sequence of online questionnaires designed to address 61 individual items was completed by each panel member. Consensus was considered to be reached if ≥70% of the experts agreed on a definition. To facilitate a common understanding among all experts involved and resolve potential ambiguities, a face-to-face consensus meeting was held between Delphi survey rounds two and three. Convenience sampling was used to construct the panel of experts. In total, 12 experts from Australia, France, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, the UK, Canada and the USA participated. By the end of the Delphi process, formal consensus was achieved for 100% (n = 61) of the terms and a glossary was then developed. Agreement between international experts has been reached on relevant terms and subsequent definitions regarding AS for patients with localized prostate cancer. This standard terminology could support multidisciplinary communication, reduce the extent of variations in clinical practice and optimize clinical decision making
External validation of a model to predict the survival of patients presenting with a spinal epidural metastasis
The surgical treatment of spinal metastases is evolving. The major problem is the
selection of patients who may benefit from surgical treatment. One of the
criteria is an expected survival of at least 3 months. A prediction model has
been previously developed. The present study has been performed in order to
validate externally the model and to demonstrate that this model can be
generalized to other institutions and other countries than the Netherlands. Data
of 356 patients from five centers in Germany, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands
who were treated for metastatic epidural spinal cord compression were collected.
Hazard ratios in the test population corresponded with those of the developmental
population. However, the observed and the expected survival were different.
Analysis revealed that the baseline hazard function was significantly different.
This tempted us to combine the data and develop a new prediction model.
Estimating iteratively, a baseline hazard was composed. An adapted prediction
model is presented. External validation of a prediction model revealed a
difference in expected survival, although the relative contribution of the
specific hazard ratios was the same as in the developmental population. This
study emphasized the need to check the baseline hazard function in external
validation. A new model has been developed using an estimated baseline hazar
Study of Zγ events and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV
We present a measurement of the Zγ production cross section and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings for form-factor scales of Λ=750 and 1000 GeV. The measurement is based on 138 (152) candidates in the eeγ (μμγ) final state using 320(290)pb-1 of pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV. The 95% C.L. limits on real and imaginary parts of individual anomalous couplings are |h10,30Z|<0.23, |h20,40Z|<0.020, |h10,30γ|<0.23, and |h20,40γ|<0.019 for Λ=1000GeV. © 2005 The American Physical Society
Measurement of the t-channel single top quark production cross section
The D0 collaboration reports direct evidence for electroweak production of
single top quarks through the t-channel exchange of a virtual W boson. This is
the first analysis to isolate an individual single top quark production
channel. We select events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing
transverse energy, and two, three or four jets from 2.3 fb^-1 of ppbar
collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. One or two of the jets are
identified as containing a b hadron. We combine three multivariate techniques
optimized for the t-channel process to measure the t- and s-channel cross
sections simultaneously. We measure cross sections of 3.14 +0.94 -0.80 pb for
the t-channel and 1.05 +-0.81 pb for the s-channel. The measured t-channel
result is found to have a significance of 4.8 standard deviations and is
consistent with the standard model prediction.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Search for single vector-like quarks in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for hypothetical vector-like quarks in ppbar collisions
at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4
fb^(-1). We select events with a final state composed of a W or Z boson and a
jet consistent with a heavy object decay. We observe no significant excess in
comparison to the background prediction and set limits on production cross
sections for vector-like quarks decaying to W+jet and Z+jet. These are the most
stringent mass limits for electroweak single vector-like quark production at
hadron colliders.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Double parton interactions in photon+3 jet events in ppbar collisions sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We have used a sample of photon+3 jets events collected by the D0 experiment
with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb^-1 to determine the fraction of
events with double parton scattering (f_DP) in a single ppbar collision at
sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The DP fraction and effective cross section (sigma_eff), a
process-independent scale parameter related to the parton density inside the
nucleon, are measured in three intervals of the second (ordered in pT) jet
transverse momentum pT_jet2 within the range 15 < pT_jet2 < 30 GeV. In this
range, f_DP varies between 0.23 < f_DP < 0.47, while sigma_eff has the average
value sigma_eff_ave = 16.4 +- 0.3(stat) +- 2.3(syst) mb.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figure
Measurement of the B0_s semileptonic branching ratio to an orbitally excited D_s** state, Br(B0_s -> Ds1(2536) mu nu)
In a data sample of approximately 1.3 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector
between 2002 and 2006, the orbitally excited charm state D_s1(2536) has been
observed with a measured mass of 2535.7 +/- 0.6 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst) MeV via
the decay mode B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X. A first measurement is made of the
branching ratio product Br(b(bar) -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X).Br(D_s1(2536)->D*
K0_S). Assuming that D_s1(2536) production in semileptonic decay is entirely
from B0_s, an extraction of the semileptonic branching ratio Br(B0_s ->
D_s1(2536) mu nu X) is made.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, version with minor changes as accepted by

Measurements of differential cross sections of Z/gamma*+jets+X events in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present cross section measurements for Z/gamma*+jets+X production,
differential in the transverse momenta of the three leading jets. The data
sample was collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton
anti-proton collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and corresponds to
an integrated luminosity of 1 fb-1. Leading and next-to-leading order
perturbative QCD predictions are compared with the measurements, and agreement
is found within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. We also make
comparisons with the predictions of four event generators. Two
parton-shower-based generators show significant shape and normalization
differences with respect to the data. In contrast, two generators combining
tree-level matrix elements with a parton shower give a reasonable description
of the the shapes observed in data, but the predicted normalizations show
significant differences with respect to the data, reflecting large scale
uncertainties. For specific choices of scales, the normalizations for either
generator can be made to agree with the measurements.Comment: Published in PLB. 11 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW + WZ to lnu jj events in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present a direct measurement of trilinear gauge boson couplings at gammaWW
and ZWW vertices in WW and WZ events produced in pp-bar collisions at
sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. We consider events with one electron or muon, missing
transverse energy, and at least two jets. The data were collected using the D0
detector and correspond to 1.1/fb of integrated luminosity. Considering two
different relations between the couplings at the gammaWW and ZWW vertices, we
measure these couplings at 68% C.L. to be kappa_{gamma}=1.07^{+0.26}_{-0.29},
lambda =0.00^{+0.06}_{-0.06} and g_{1}^{Z}=1.04^{+0.09}_{-0.09} in a scenario
respecting SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge symmetry and kappa =1.04^{+0.11}_{-0.11} and
lambda=0.00^{+0.06}_{-0.06} in an "equal couplings" scenario.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, published in Phys. Rev. D, updated to published
