Achieving quality teaching in developing countries : identifying factors that influence the delivery of quality teaching in primary schools in rural Cambodia : a research project presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of International Development, Institute of Development Studies, Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand
At a global level the Education for All focus has shifted from years of schooling to the
quality of education being attained. The delivery of quality education is dependent
upon quality teaching. While there is no clear definition of quality teaching there are
recognised characteristics which lend themselves to quality teaching and therefore
are used as proxies to identify what constitutes a quality teacher. Of importance to
this study is the fact these same recognised characteristics of what constitutes quality
teaching and a quality teacher are reflected in the Ministry of Education, Youth and
Sport in Cambodia (MoEYS) goals and teachers in Cambodia clearly identify with
these characteristics.
Drawing on a case study of Cambodia this research examines the influences that work
upon a teacher to either positively influence the delivery of quality teaching or to
negatively influence the same.
While influences which positively and negatively impact quality teaching are wide
ranging, some are definitely more influential than others. Hence there is a clear
recognition of the importance of the provision of basic resources for education. The
delivery of quality teaching requires basic physical infrastructure and resources such
as teacher training, adequate teacher salaries and teaching materials. Without these
basic resources a teacher is destined to fail in the delivery of quality teaching. This is
particularly relevant in a developing country where the teachers are more likely to be
working at a pre-professional level in terms of teaching skills, dependent upon
teaching materials and reliant on basic classroom management skills. This is the case
in Cambodia. Before any other influences become significant these fundamental
needs must be met. There is also an important link between the health of both
teachers and children and the delivery of quality teaching. Basic health needs must be
met if the delivery of quality teaching is not to be undermined
The present essay perceives in the inauguration of the new Magister in Intercultural and Bilingual Education in Temuco, the initiation of a second stage of Educational Reforms in Latin America, this time with a regional rather than a global focus. In this context, the paper takes into account various criticisms of the first stage of reforms before considering new educational challenges. It questions above al1 the linguistic preconceptions behind the
notions of "culture" and "interculturality" that are being used in current educational programmes, finding there the old debate between proponents of linguistic pragmatics and modern Saussurean linguistics. The author concludes that only a reevaluation of the constructive function of language at the heart of this debate will facilitate a new approach to two fundamental aspects of the second stage of educational reforms: interculturality and bilingual education
Enhanced heterogeneity of rpoB in Mycobacterium tuberculosis found at low pH.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to gain an insight into the molecular mechanisms of the evolution of rifampicin resistance in response to controlled changes in the environment. METHODS: We determined the proportion of rpoB mutants in the chemostat culture and characterized the sequence of mutations found in the rifampicin resistance-determining region of rpoB in a steady-state chemostat at pH 7.0 and 6.2. RESULTS: The overall proportion of rpoB mutants of strain H37Rv remained constant for 37 days at pH 7.0, ranging between 3.6 x 10(-8) and 8.9 x 10(-8); however, the spectrum of mutations varied. The most commonly detected mutation, serine to leucine mutation at codon 531 (S531L), increased from 40% to 89%, while other mutations (S531W, H526Y, H526D, H526R, S522L and D516V) decreased over the 37 day sampling period. Changing the pH from 7.0 to 6.2 did not significantly alter the overall proportion of mutants, but resulted in a decrease in the percentage of strains harbouring S531L (from 89% to 50%) accompanied by an increase in the range of different mutations from 4 to 12. CONCLUSIONS: The data confirm that the fitness of strains with the S531L mutation is greater than that of strains containing other mutations. We also conclude that at low pH the environment is permissive for a wider spectrum of mutations, which may provide opportunities for a successful mutant to survive
B-stability of numerical integrators on Riemannian manifolds
We propose a generalization of nonlinear stability of numerical one-step
integrators to Riemannian manifolds in the spirit of Butcher's notion of
B-stability. Taking inspiration from Simpson-Porco and Bullo, we introduce
non-expansive systems on such manifolds and define B-stability of integrators.
In this first exposition, we provide concrete results for a geodesic version of
the Implicit Euler (GIE) scheme. We prove that the GIE method is B-stable on
Riemannian manifolds with non-positive sectional curvature. We show through
numerical examples that the GIE method is expansive when applied to a certain
non-expansive vector field on the 2-sphere, and that the GIE method does not
necessarily possess a unique solution for large enough step sizes. Finally, we
derive a new improved global error estimate for general Lie group integrators
Dwarf Cepheids in the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We have discovered 20 dwarf Cepheids (DC) in the Carina dSph galaxy from the
analysis of individual CCD images obtained for a deep photometric study of the
system. These short-period pulsating variable stars are by far the most distant
(~100 kpc) and faintest (V ~ 23.0) DCs known. The Carina DCs obey a
well-defined period-luminosity relation, allowing us to readily distinguish
between overtone and fundamental pulsators in nearly every case. Unlike RR Lyr
stars, the pulsation mode turns out to be uncorrelated with light-curve shape,
nor do the overtone pulsators tend towards shorter periods compared to the
fundamental pulsators. Using the period-luminosity (PL) relations from Nemec et
al. (1994 AJ, 108, 222) and McNamara (1995, AJ, 109, 1751), we derive (m-M)_0 =
20.06 +/- 0.12, for E(B-V) = 0.025 and [Fe/H] = -2.0, in good agreement with
recent, independent estimates of the distance/reddening of Carina. The error
reflects the uncertainties in the DC distance scale, and in the metallicity and
reddening of Carina. The frequency of DCs among upper main sequence stars in
Carina is approximately 3%. The ratio of dwarf Cepheids to RR Lyr stars in
Carina is 0.13 +/- 0.10, though this result is highly sensitive to the
star-formation history of Carina and the evolution of the Horizontal Branch. We
discuss how DCs may be useful to search effectively for substructure in the
Galactic halo out to Galactocentric distances of ~100 kpc.Comment: 20 pages of text, 7 figure
Team boosting behaviours:Development and validation of a new concept and scale
In teams, some people are truly noticed when present, and sorely missed when absent. Often they are described as the “life of the party”, but in a formal team context, we refer to their behaviors as “team boosting behavior”. These behaviors have the potential to affect the team’s processes. In three consecutive studies, we conceptualized these behaviors and developed and validated a questionnaire to measure them. In Study 1, we defined team boosting behaviors as the extent to which team members exhibit mood-enhancing, energizing, and uniting behaviors, directed towards team members. In Study 2, we developed and validated an instrument to measure team boosting behaviors using a sample of team members in work and sports teams (N = 385). Results supported a three-factor structure and indicated positive relationships with conceptually similar constructs. In Study 3, we cross-validated the three-factor structure among the members of 120 work teams and offer evidence for convergent and criterion validity of the Team Boosting behavior scale. The behaviors related positively to a positive team climate, team work engagement, and leader-rated team performance. The scale provides a useful tool for future empirical research to study the role of individual team boosting behaviors in shaping team processes and outcomes
