    Central Falls Welcome Sign Project

    Get PDF
Our inspiration for this modern style welcome sign came mostly from the welcome sign for Vancouver, Canada. This approach would give Central Falls a look of it’s own among the more traditional syle signs of surrounding towns. The double paneled structure design of this option would make for the option of having a bilingual sign, showcasing the multi-cultural heritage of the City

Central Falls Welcome Sign Project Phase 2

For this design, the intent was to create a completely different identity for the City of Central Falls, as well as create a stronger connection with the state of Rhode Island. The curved shape that is created by the top portion of the design suggests a relationship with the Ocean State and the symbol of the wave that is seen throughout the State and even its license plate. It also creates a more modern approach with its abstract shape as well as creates a new and recognizable destination for tourists and locals. The use of brick for the base suggests that although new and different and for the future, it still holds true to the principles that make Central Falls the City it is today

Achieving ICME with Multiscale Modeling: The Effects of Constituent Properties and Processing on the Performance of Laminated Polymer Matrix Composite Structures

    Get PDF
Integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) is a useful approach for tailoring the performance of a material. For fiber-reinforced composites, not only do the properties of the constituents of the composite affect the performance, but so does the architecture (or microstructure) of the constituents. The generalized method of cells is demonstrated to be a viable micromechanics tool for determining the effects of the microstructure on the performance of laminates. The micromechanics is used to predict the inputs for a macroscale model for a variety of different fiber volume fractions, and fiber architectures. Using this technique, the material performance can be tailored for specific applications by judicious selection of constituents, volume fraction, and architectural arrangement given a particular manufacturing scenari

Influence of the particle size distribution on the Critical State Properties of Mine Tailings

    Get PDF
Arguably, critical state soil mechanics (CSSM) is now the preeminent methodology for understanding static liquefaction of mine tailings, having been used in the mining industry by the expert panels retained to investigate recent TSF failures. One of the key ingredients of the CSSM framework is the assessment of a critical state line, which separates contractive from dila-tive states. A critical state line is often defined by a linear relationship and two parameters, namely the altitude of the critical state line at 1 kPa (¿) and its slope (¿). In this study, we use the TAILENG mine tailings database to investigate potential relationships between the particle fea-tures and the particle size distribution and the critical state properties. Towards this end, the crit-ical state line is evaluated for a range of mine tailings with broad gradations and compressibility, defining ¿and ¿, with known particle size distributions. This information is subsequently used to investigate potential correlations. Insights from the observations are shared, and potential funda-mental mechanisms in explaining correlations between the critical state properties and particle features are discussed.Postprint (published version

Quantum description of the orientational degrees of freedom in a biaxial nematic liquid

The quantum mechanical version of a classical model for studying the orientational degrees of freedom corresponding to a nematic liquid composed of biaxial molecules is presented. The effective degrees of freedom are described by operators carrying an SU(3) representation, which allows the explicit calculation of the partition function in the mean field approximation. The algebraic consistency conditions are solved numerically and the equilibrium phases of the system are determined. In particular, the entropy, the specific heat and the order parameters are presented for different choices of the constituent biaxial molecules. Our results reproduce the classical calculation in the limit of high temperatures and high quantum numbers.Comment: 33 pages, Latex, 11 figure

Jet quenching within a hybrid strong/weak coupling approach

We propose a novel hybrid model for jet quenching, including both strong and weak coupling physics where each seems appropriate. Branching in the parton shower is assumed to be perturbative and described by DGLAP evolution, while interactions with the medium result in each parton in the shower losing energy as at strong coupling, as realized holographically. The medium-modified parton shower is embedded into a hydrodynamic evolution of hot QCD plasma and confronted with LHC jet data.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, Quark Matter 2014 proceeding

We illustrate this automation process with examples extracted from the e-PACT corpus that involve the placement of clitic pronouns in verbal compound contexts. Our task consists in paraphrasing and normalizing, among others, constructions such as vou-lhe/posso-lhe fazer uma surpresa into vou/posso fazer-lhe uma surpresa "lit: I will/can to him/her make a surprise / I will/can make to him/her a surprise; I will/can make him/her a surprise", where the clitic pronoun lhe migrates from an enclitic position immediately after the first verb of the verbal compound to an enclitic position after the main verb, which is the verb responsible for the selection of that pronominal argument. The first verb is either an auxiliary verb or a volitive verb, e.g., querer "want". This is a standard revision procedure in European Portuguese. Cases like this represent linguistic phenomena where language students and language users in general get confused or "stumble". The paper focuses on general language where the phenomena being observed occur, describes examples of interest found in the corpus, and presents an automatic solution for the normalization of informal syntactic inadequacies found in the researched structures into standard structures typical of formal or professional writing through the application of very generic transformational grammars.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Aproximación al cálculo del crecimiento real de Colombia: aportes metodológicos para la inclusión en las cuentas nacionales de los impactos del agotamiento del carbón y del gas natural

The integrated accounting system considers the natural resource depletion issues. We analyze the difference between this system and the traditional national accounting system, using data from the mining sector in Colombia (natural gas and coal). Results show that by including the impact of these two resources exhaustion, the traditional GDP would be overestimated; while it grew at an annual rate of 2.2% for the period 1995-2005, adjusted GDP would show a grow rate of 1.3%, reflecting costs on real country growth. These results open a debate given the current proposal of basing part of economic growth in Colombia on mining.
