Unmanned Ground Vehicles for Smart Farms

    Get PDF
Forecasts of world population increases in the coming decades demand new production processes that are more efficient, safer, and less destructive to the environment. Industries are working to fulfill this mission by developing the smart factory concept. The agriculture world should follow industry leadership and develop approaches to implement the smart farm concept. One of the most vital elements that must be configured to meet the requirements of the new smart farms is the unmanned ground vehicles (UGV). Thus, this chapter focuses on the characteristics that the UGVs must have to function efficiently in this type of future farm. Two main approaches are discussed: automating conventional vehicles and developing specifically designed mobile platforms. The latter includes both wheeled and wheel-legged robots and an analysis of their adaptability to terrain and crops

Clinicopathological and ultrastructural characterization of periapical actinomycosis

The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinicopathological and the ultrastructural features of periapical actinomycosis (PA) cases. Data from the files of an oral pathology laboratory were retrieved and the findings of histopathological analysis were evaluated. Hematoxylin?eosin (HE), a modified Brown & Brenn, and Grocott stains as well as ultrastructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were utilized. Six cases were obtained, 4 females and 2 males, with a mean age of 34 year-old. Two cases were symptomatic, lower teeth and the anterior region were more commonly affected, and all cases were characterized by periapical radiolucencies. All cases presented sulfur granules with a ray-fungus or club-shaped pattern of the Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon in HE-stained sections, with filamentous gram-positive bacteria aggregates highlighted by the modified Brown & Brenn stain. SEM analysis revealed abundant packed rod-like and filamentous bacteria associated with an extracellular amorphous material. EDX analysis showed predominant picks of calcium and sulfur in actinomycotic colonies. Our findings suggest that PA manifests either clinically and radiologically as a non-specific and heterogeneous condition and that the actinomycotic colonies consist in a calcium- and sulfur-rich matrix. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of submitting periapical specimens after surgical removal to histopathological analysis

Bridging the gap between researchers and patients: The role of the Institutional Review Boards in the informed consent process

Background: The Institutional-Review-Boards (IRB) frequently give unfavorable opinions to evaluated studies due to deficiencies in informed consent forms (ICFs), which delays the ethical approval of the study and increases waste in research. Objective: To analyze the extent to which IRB in our center gives unfavorable opinions due to documents deficiencies and to evaluate types of objection. Material and methods: Retrospective observational study of decisions during the first review by the IRB in our center (2012-2015). We carried out a systematic review of minutes when decisions on approval of studies are collected. If not approval, we analyzed appealed objections. Results: 1858 clinical studies were evaluated by the IRB. 1558 required informed consent for participating (83.9%, CI95%:82.1-85.5), 987 were not approved during the first review due to deficiencies in ICFs (63.3%, CI95%:60.9-65.7). The main causes of objections for non-approval were unreadability (11.7%, CI95%:10.6-12.9), inadequate information given about access to personal data rights (9.2%, CI95%:8.1-10.2), biological samples management (7.8%, IC95%:6.9-8.8), and expected benefits (7.6%, IC95%:6.7-8.6). Conclusions: Deficiencies in ICFs are an important reason for non-approval of protocols evaluated by an IRB. There are three fundamental weaknesses on which the IRB plays a key role: 1) improving readability; 2) adapting them to regulations concerning data protection and biological materials management; 3) avoiding misleading information towards enrollment

Genetic analysis of an insular population of Sapajus nigritus (Primates: Cebidae) in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil

The black-horned capuchin (Sapajus nigritus) is a neotropical primate with wide distribution from southeastern Brazil to northeastern Argentina. Although this species has been described with coat pattern variation, even with intrapopulational differences, and characterized as having the greatest genetic diversity among Sapajus species, there are still few studies on natural populations that contribute to the knowledge of this intraspecific variability. We examined individuals from an as yet unstudied population of Ilha da Marambaia, Rio de Janeiro (RJ) state, Brazil, compared with published data for S. nigritus. We sought to confirm the species through phenotypic and genetic characterization using C-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization with #11qHe+/21WCP probes for chromosomal constitutive heterochromatin (He+) patterns, and cytochrome c oxidase I and II gene sequences for phylogenetic analysis. The coat presented two color patterns, varying from brown to blackish on the body, yellow to brown on the chest, and white to yellow on the face, besides the presence and shape of the tufts on the head, corresponding to S. nigritus. He+ was identified in pairs 4, 12, 13 and 17, and less consistently in pairs 6, 19 and 21, already described for this species. While most Sapajus species have a large He+ block, here pair 11 was identified without extracentromeric He+, the same as reported for S. nigritus from Argentina. Molecular analysis showed divergence of this population from other S. nigritus sequences, reinforcing a trend already demonstrated when samples from RJ are compared with the rest of the distribution, which may represent an evolutionary deviation.Fil: Mattos Penedo, Diego. Endomarketing para la adherencia al tratamiento de enfermedades dermatológicas estigmatizantes

    Get PDF
