    Parameterizing Random Test Data According to Equivalence Classes

    We are concerned with the problem of detecting bugs in machine learning applications. In the absence of sufficient real-world data, creating suitably large data sets for testing can be a difficult task. Random testing is one solution, but may have limited effectiveness in cases in which a reliable test oracle does not exist, as is the case of the machine learning applications of interest. To address this problem, we have developed an approach to creating data sets called "parameterized random data generation"Â. Our data generation framework allows us to isolate or combine different equivalence classes as desired, and then randomly generate large data sets using the properties of those equivalence classes as parameters. This allows us to take advantage of randomness but still have control over test case selection at the system testing level. We present our findings from using the approach to test two different machine learning ranking applications

    Synthesis of Graphitic Carbon Nanostructures from Sawdust and Their Application as Electrocatalyst Supports

    We present a novel and facile synthetic method for fabricating graphitic carbon nanostructures (GCNs) from sawdust. This method is based on the use of catalysts (Fe or Ni) that allows the direct conversion of sawdust into highly graphitized carbon material. The following procedure was used to obtain these graphitic nanoparticles:  (a) impregnation of the sawdust particles with iron or nickel salts, (b) carbonization of the impregnated material at a temperature of 900 or 1000 °C, and (c) selective removal of the non-graphitized carbon (amorphous carbon) by an oxidant (KMnO4). The resulting carbon is made up of nanosized graphitic structures (i.e., nanocapsules, nanocoils, nanoribbons), which have a high crystallinity, as evidenced by TEM/SAED, XRD and Raman analysis. These GCNs were used as supports for platinum nanoparticles. Such prepared electrocatalysts show an electrocatalytical surface area close to 90 m2.g-1 Pt, and they present a similar or higher electrocatalytic activity toward methanol electrooxidation than the Pt/Vulcan electrocatalyst prepared in the same conditions.The financial support for this research work provided by the Spanish MCyT (MAT2005-00262, MAT2004-01479 and FEDER) is gratefully acknowledged.Peer reviewe

    From back to front: A functional model for the cerebellar modulation in the establishment of conditioned preferences for cocaine‐related cues

We previously demonstrated that cocaine‐induced conditioned preference increased activity at the dorsal posterior cerebellar vermis. Unexpectedly, a neurotoxic lesion at this region increased the probability of cocaine‐induced conditioned preference acquisition. The present research aimed at providing an explanatory model for such as facilitative effect of the cerebellar lesion. First, we addressed a tracing study in which we found a direct projection from the lateral (dentate) nucleus to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that also receives Purkinje axons from lobule VIII in the vermis. This pathway might control the activity and plasticity of the cortico‐striatal circuitry. Then we evaluated cFos expression in different regions of the medial prefrontal cortex and striatum after a lesion in lobule VIII before conditioning. Additionally, perineuronal net (PNN) expression was assessed to explore whether the cerebellar lesion might affect synaptic stabilization mechanisms in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Damage in this region of the vermis induced general disinhibition of the mPFC and striatal subdivisions that receive dopaminergic projections, mainly from the VTA. Moreover, cerebellar impairment induced an upregulation of PNN expression in the mPFC. The major finding of this research was to provide an explanatory model for the function of the posterior cerebellar vermis on drug‐related memory. In this model, damage of the posterior vermis would release striatum‐cortical networks from the inhibitory tonic control exerted by the cerebellar cortex over VTA, thereby promoting drug effects

    Diversidad genética de cultivares de caña de azúcar determinada por marcadores de ADN y caracteres morfológicos

    Un mejor conocimiento de la diversidad genética de la caña de azúcar proveerá información útil sobre el valor de los genotipos para los programas de mejoramiento y contribuirá tanto a hacer un más eficiente uso y conservación de los recursos genéticos, como a asegurar los derechos de propiedad intelectual de los creadores de nuevas variedades. Si bien los descriptores morfológicos constituyen las herramientas más tradicionales para caracterizar a las variedades, pueden presentar variaciones fenotípicas causadas por factores ambientales. Por este motivo los marcadores moleculares son cada vez más importantes en la identificación de genotipos y la estimación de la diversidad, debido a su precisión, abundancia e independencia de factores ambientales. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar genotipos empleados como padres en el Programa de Mejoramiento de la Caña de Azúcar de la Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (EEAOC), usando marcadores moleculares (AFLP y SSR) y caracteres morfológicos y comparando los datos obtenidos con dos programas informáticos estadísticos (NTSys e InfoStat). Todos los cultivares se agruparon en un mismo grupo con ambos programas, cuando se emplearon al menos 150 datos. Probablemente debido al intercambio regular de germoplasma, no se observó una clara diferenciación genética entre los genotipos locales y las variedades de los EE. UU., que se agruparon juntos. Aunque los caracteres morfológicos reflejan solamente la semejanza externa, la topología del dendrograma no se modificó cuando se combinaron datos moleculares y morfológicos. Estos resultados sugieren que ambos métodos de caracterización deberían ser utilizados para estimar la diversidad genética y que los marcadores moleculares deberían ser incluidos a un nivel internacional, para proteger las nuevas variedades de caña de azúcar.Better knowledge of sugarcane genetic diversity will provide useful information concerning genotypic value for breeding programs and should help to improve the use and conservation of genetic resources and the protection of sugarcane varieties by intellectual property rights. Morphological descriptors are traditional tools to characterise varieties; however, they vary phenotypically because of environmental effects. Therefore, molecular markers have become increasingly important for identifying genotypes and estimating diversity, as they are accurate, readily available, and are not affected by the environment. The aim of this research was to evaluate genotypes used as parental materials in the Sugarcane Breeding Program of Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (EEAOC), Argentina, by using molecular markers (AFLP and SSR) and morphological traits, and by comparing the data obtained with two statistical software programs (NTSys and InfoStat). All cultivars grouped in one main cluster of the dendrogram when using both programs and at least 150 data points. Local Argentine genotypes grouped together with US-varieties and no clear genetic differentiation was found, probably due to regular germplasm exchange. Although morphological traits reflected external resemblance only, the topology of the dendrogram was not modified when combining both molecular and morphological data. These results suggest that both characterisation methods should be used to estimate genetic diversity.     Unusual morphology in the mid-Cretaceous lizard Oculudentavis

    Oculudentavis khaungraae was described based on a tiny skull trapped in amber. The slender tapering rostrum with retracted narial openings, large eyes, and short vaulted braincase led to its identification as the smallest avian dinosaur on record, comparable to the smallest living hummingbirds. Despite its bird-like appearance, Oculudentavis showed several features inconsistent with its original phylogenetic placement. Here, we describe a more complete specimen that demonstrates Oculudentavis is actually a bizarre lizard of uncertain position. The new specimen is described as a new species within the genus Oculudentavis. The new interpretation and phylogenetic placement highlight a rare case of convergent evolution in skull proportions but apparently not in morphological characters. Our results re-affirm the importance of Myanmar amber in yielding unusual taxa from a forest ecosystem rarely represented in the fossil record

    A new Early Cretaceous lizard in Myanmar amber with exceptionally preserved integument

    We here report on a well-preserved juvenile lizard specimen in Albian amber (ca. 110 mya) from the Hkamti site (Myanmar). This new taxon is represented by an articulated skull and the anterior portion of the trunk, including the pectoral girdle and forelimbs. The scleral ossicles and eyelid are also visible, and the specimen exhibits pristine detail of the integument (of both head and body). In a combined molecular and morphological analysis, it was consistently recovered as a scincoid lizard (Scinciformata), as sister to Tepexisaurus + Xantusiidae. However, the phylogenetic position of the new taxon should be interpreted with caution as the holotype is an immature individual. We explored the possibility of miscoding ontogenetically variable characters by running alternative analyses in which these characters were scored as missing data for our taxon. With the exception of one tree, in which it was sister to Amphisbaenia, the specimen was recovered as a Pan-xantusiid. Moreover, we cannot rule out the possibility that it represents a separate lineage of uncertain phylogenetic position, as it is the case for many Jurassic and Cretaceous taxa. Nonetheless, this fossil offers a rare opportunity to glimpse the external appearance of one group of lizards during the Early Cretaceous

    A model for two-proton emission induced by electron scattering

    A model to study two-proton emission processes induced by electron scattering is developed. The process is induced by one-body electromagnetic operators acting together with short-range correlations, and by two-body Δ\Delta currents. The model includes all the diagrams containing a single correlation function. A test of the sensitivity of the model to the various theoretical inputs is done. An investigation of the relevance of the Δ\Delta currents is done by changing the final state angular momentum, excitation energy and momentum transfer. The sensitivity of the cross section to the details of the correlation function is studied by using realistic and schematic correlations. Results for 12^{12}C, 16^{16}O and 40^{40}Ca nuclei are presented.Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, 3 table

    Outcomes of Frail Patients While Waiting for Kidney Transplantation : Differences between Physical Frailty Phenotype and FRAIL Scale

    Frailty is associated with poorer outcomes among patients waiting for kidney transplantation (KT). Several different tools to measure frailty have been used; however, their predictive value is unknown. This is a prospective longitudinal study of 449 KT candidates evaluated for frailty by the Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP) and the FRAIL scale. During the study period, 296 patients received a KT, while 153 remained listed. Patients who did not get receive a transplant were more frequently frail according to PFP (16.3 vs. 7.4%, p = 0.013). Robust patients had fewer hospital admissions during the 1st year after listing (20.8% if PFP = 0 vs. 43.4% if ≥1, and 27.1% if FRAIL = 0 vs. 48.9% if ≥1) and fewer cardiovascular events (than FRAIL ≥ 1) or major infectious events (than PFP ≥ 1). According to PFP, scoring 1 point had an impact on patient survival and chance of transplantation in the univariate analysis. The multivariable analysis corroborated the result, as candidates with PFP ≥ 3 had less likelihood of transplantation (HR 0.45 [0.26-0.77]). The FRAIL scale did not associate with any of these outcomes. In KT candidates, pre-frailty and frailty according to both the PFP and the FRAIL scale were associated with poorer results while listed. The PFP detected that frail patients were less likely to receive a KT, while the FRAIL scale did not
