Asteroseismology of the heartbeat star KIC 5006817
This paper summarizes the project work on asteroseismology at the ERASMUS+
GATE 2020 Summer school on space satellite data. The aim was to do a global
asteroseismic analysis of KIC 5006817 and quantify its stellar properties using
the high-quality, state of the art space missions data. We employed the
aperture photometry to analyze the data from the Kepler space telescope and the
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Using the lightkurve Python
package, we have derived the asteroseismic parameters and calculated the
stellar parameters using the scaling relations. Our analysis of KIC 5006817
confirmed its classification as a heartbeat binary. The rich oscillation
spectrum facilitate estimating power excess () at
145.500.50 Hz and large frequency separation () to be
11.630.10 Hz. Our results showed that the primary component is a
low-luminosity, red-giant branch star with a mass, radius, surface gravity, and
luminosity of 1.530.07 M, 5.910.12 R, 3.080.01
dex, and 19.660.73 L, respectively. The orbital period of the

Two new pulsating low-mass pre-white dwarfs or SX Phenix stars?*
Context. The discovery of pulsations in low-mass stars opens an opportunity
for probing their interiors and to determine their evolution, by employing the
tools of asteroseismology. Aims. We aim to analyze high-speed photometry of
SDSSJ145847.02070754.46 and SDSSJ173001.94070600.25 and discover
brightness variabilities. In order to locate these stars in the diagram we fit optical spectra (SDSS) with synthetic non-magnetic
spectra derived from model atmospheres. Methods. To carry out this study, we
used the photometric data obtained by us for these stars with the 2.15m
telescope at CASLEO, Argentina. We analyzed their light curves and we apply the
Discrete Fourier Transform to determine the pulsation frequencies. Finally, we
compare both stars in the diagram, with known two
pre-white dwarfs, seven pulsating pre-ELM white dwarf stars, Scuti and
SX Phe stars. Results. We report the discovery of pulsations in
SDSSJ145847.02070754.46 and SDSSJ173001.94070600.25. We determine their
effective temperature and surface gravity to be = 7 972 200
K, = 4.25 0.5 and = 7 925 200 K, =
4.25 0.5, respectively. With these parameters these new pulsating
low-mass stars can be identified with either ELM white dwarfs (with ~ 0.17 Mo)
or more massive SX Phe stars. We identified pulsation periods of 3 278.7 and 1
633.9 s for SDSSJ145847.02070754.46 and a pulsation period of 3 367.1 s for
SDSSJ173001.94070600.25. These two new objects together with those of Maxted
et al. (2013, 2014) indicate the possible existence of a new instability domain
towards the late stages of evolution of low-mass white dwarf stars, although

Evaluation of two MM5-PBL parameterizations for solar radiation and temperature estimation in the South-Eastern area of the Iberian Peninsula
We study the relative performance of two different MM5-PBL parameterizations (Blackadar and MRF) simulating hourly values of solar irradiance and temperature in the
south-eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The evaluation
was carried out throughout the different seasons of the year 2005 and for three different sky conditions:
clear-sky, broken-clouds and overcast conditions. Two integrations, one per PBL parameterization, were carried out for every sky condition and season of the year and results were compared with observational data. Overall, the MM5 model, both using the Blackadar or MRF PBL parameterization, revealed to be a valid tool to estimate hourly values of solar radiation and temperature over the study area. The influence of the PBL parameterization on the model estimates was found to be more important for the solar radiation than for the temperature and highly dependent on the season and sky conditions. Particularly, a detailed analysis revealed that, during broken-clouds conditions, the ability of the model to reproduce hourly changes in the solar radiation strongly depends upon the selected PBL parameterization. Additionally, it was found that solar radiation RMSE values are about one order of magnitude higher during broken-clouds and overcast conditions compared to clear-sky conditions. For the temperature, the two PBL parameterizations provide very similar estimates. Only under overcast conditions and during
the autumn, the MRF provides significantly better estimates
Density and reproductive characteristics of female brown bears in the Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain
Here we present annual nearest-neighbour distances (as a proxy of density) between females with cubs-of-the-year (hereafter FCOY) and reproductive characteristics of brown bears Ursus arctos in the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain), from 1989 to 2017. FCOY nearest-neighbour distances and reproduction parameters of 19 focal females followed over several consecutive years (from 2004 to 2017) were obtained from bears inhabiting the western sector of the Cantabrian Mountains, where most of the bear population resides. In contrast, general reproductive characteristics were studied in the whole Cantabrian Mountains (western and eastern sectors together) on a sample of 362 litter sizes and 695 cubs. Mean nearest-neighbour distance between FCOY was 2559 ± 1222 m (range = 1305–4757 m). Mean litter size was significantly larger in the west (1.8 ± 0.2 cubs) than in the east (1.3 ± 0.6 cubs). Mean litter size for the whole of the Cantabrian Mountains was 1.6 ± 0.3 cubs. Litter sizes of one, two and three cubs represented 33.4, 56.1 and 10.5% of observed family groups, respectively. Interannual variations in litter size were not significant for both the western and the eastern areas. Mean cub mortality was 0.2 ± 0.5 cubs and did not vary among years. Cub mortality per litter size was 3.9% for one cub, 69.2% for two cubs and 26.9% for three cubs. Mean reproductive rate of the 19 focal females was 1.5 ± 0.6 cubs (n = 58 litters). Litter size of focal FCOY did not differ from the litter size obtained from systematic observations in the whole Cantabrian Mountains. During this period, cub mortality occurred in 24.1% of the 58 litters. Females usually bred every second year (average litter interval = 2.2 years). Toll-like receptors 2 and 4 cooperate in the control of the emerging pathogen Brucella microti
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize pathogen-derived molecules and play a critical role during the host innate and adaptive immune response. Brucella spp. are intracellular gram-negative bacteria including several virulent species, which cause a chronic zoonotic infection in a wide range of mammalian hosts known as brucellosis. A new Brucella species, Brucella microti, was recently isolated from wild rodents and found to be highly pathogenic in mice. Using this species-specific model, it was previously found that CD8+ T cells are required to control this infection. In order to find out the role of TLR-mediated responses in the control of this pathogen, the course of infection of B. microti was analyzed over 3 weeks in wild-type (WT) and TLR knock out (KO) mice including TLR2-/-, TLR4-/-, TLR9-/-, TLR2×4-/- and TLR2×4×9-/-. WT and single TLR2, TLR4 and TLR9 KO mice similarly control infection in liver and spleen. In contrast, bacterial clearance was delayed in TLR2×4-/- and TLR2×4×9-/- mice at 7 and 14 days post-infection. This defect correlated with impaired maturation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production in B. microti-infected dendritic cells from TLR2×4-/- and TLR2×4×9-/- mice. Finally, it was found that Tc cells from TLR2×4-/- and TLR2×4×9-/- mice showed reduced ability to inhibit growth of B. microti in macrophages, suggesting the involvement of TLR2 and 4 in the generation of specific Tc cells. Our findings indicate that TLR2 and TLR4 are required to control B. microti infection in mice and that this effect could be related to its participation in the maturation of dendritic cells and the generation of specific CD8+ Tc cells
Mixed Production of Filamentous Fungal Spores for Preventing Soil-Transmitted Helminth Zoonoses: A Preliminary Analysis
Helminth zoonoses are parasitic infections shared by humans and animals, being the soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) mainly caused by roundworms (ascarids) and hookworms. This study was aimed to assess the individual and/or mixed production of two helminth-antagonistic fungi, one ovicide (Mucor circinelloides) and other predator (Duddingtonia flagrans). Fungi were grown both in Petri plates and in a submerged culture (composed by water, NaCl, Na2HPO4 · 12 H2O, and wheat (Triticum aestivum)). A Fasciola hepatica recombinant protein (FhrAPS) was incorporated to the cultures to improve fungal production. All the cultured plates showed fungal growth, without difference in the development of the fungi when grown alone or mixed. High counts of Mucor spores were produced in liquid media cultures, and no significant differences were achieved regarding single or mixed cultures, or the incorporation of the FhrAPS. A significantly higher production of Duddingtonia spores after the incorporation of the FhrAPS was observed. When analyzing the parasiticide efficacy of the fungal mixture, viability of T. canis eggs reduced to 51%, and the numbers of third stage cyathostomin larvae reduced to 4%. It is concluded, the capability of a fungal mixture containing an ovicide (Mucor) and a predator species (Duddingtonia) for growing together in a submerged medium containing the FhrAPS offers a very interesting tool for preventing STHs.This work was partly supported by the Research Projects 10MDS261023PR (Xunta de Galicia, Spain) and AGL2012-34355 (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Spain; FEDER)S
Total Directional Variation for Video Denoising
In this paper, we propose a variational approach for video denoising, based
on a total directional variation (TDV) regulariser proposed in Parisotto et al.
(2018), for image denoising and interpolation. In the TDV regulariser, the
underlying image structure is encoded by means of weighted derivatives so as to
enhance the anisotropic structures in images, e.g. stripes or curves with a
dominant local directionality. For the extension of TDV to video denoising, the
space-time structure is captured by the volumetric structure tensor guiding the
smoothing process. We discuss this and present our whole video denoising
work-flow. Our numerical results are compared with some state-of-the-art video

Electronic structure analysis of the quasi-one-dimensional oxide Sr6Co5O15 within the LDA+U method
The quasi-one-dimensional cobalt oxide Sr6Co5O15 is studied using first-principles electronic-structure calculations and Boltzmann transport theory. We have been able to describe the electronic structure, characterized by the structural one-dimensionality and a particular type of charge ordering, with unexpected electronic structure of the different Co atoms. The origin of the large unquenched misaligned orbital angular momenta comes out naturally from a correct description of the different crystal-field environments. The impact of using BARCIST 1.0 criteria on quantification of BAT volume and activity in three independent cohorts of adults
Human brown adipose tissue (BAT) is commonly assessed by cold-induced 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose
(FDG) PET-CT using several quantification criteria. Uniform criteria for data analysis became available
recently (BARCIST 1.0). We compared BAT volume and activity following BARCIST 1.0 criteria
against the most commonly used criteria [Hounsfield Units (HU):-250, -50, standardized uptake
value (SUV):2.0; HU: Not applied, SUV:2.0 and HU:-180, -10, SUV:1.5] in a prospective study using
three independent cohorts of men including young lean adults, young overweight/obese adults and
middle-aged overweight/obese adults. BAT volume was the most variable outcome between criteria.
While BAT volume calculated using the HU: NA; SUV: 2.0 criteria was up to 207% higher than the BAT
volume calculated based on BARCIST 1.0 criteria, it was up to 57% lower using the HU: -250, -50; SUV:
2.0 criteria compared to the BARCIST 1.0. Similarly, BAT activity (expressed as SUVmean) also differed
between different thresholds mainly because SUVmean depends on BAT volume. SUVpeak was the most
consistent BAT outcome across the four study criteria. Of note, we replicated these findings in three
independent cohorts. In conclusion, BAT volume and activity as determined by 18F-FDG-PET/CT highly
depend on the quantification criteria used. Future human BAT studies should conduct sensitivity
analysis with different thresholds in order to understand whether results are driven by the selected HU
and/or SUV thresholds. The design of the present study precludes providing any conclusive threshold,
but before more definitive thresholds for HU and SUV are available, we support the use of BARCIST 1.0
criteria to facilitate interpretation of BAT characteristics between research groups
Intrinsic Factors Influencing the Infection by Helminth Parasites in Horses under an Oceanic Climate Area (NW Spain)
A coprological survey to determine the influence of some intrinsic factors (breed, age, and sex) on the infection by helminth parasites in equine livestock (n = 418) under an oceanic climate area (NW Spain) was conducted. Faecal samples were individually collected and analyzed by the coprological techniques. The main strongylid genera identified were Trichonema and Cyalocephalus spp (small strongyles) and Strongylus and Triodontophorus (large strongyles). The prevalence of gastrointestinal nematode was 89% (95% CI 86, 92) and 1% cestoda (0, 2). The percentage of horses with strongyloid parasites was 89% (86, 92), 11% (8, 14) for Parascaris, and 3% (1, 5) for Oxyuris. The highest prevalence for ascariosis was observed in the youngest horses (<3 years), for oxyurosis in the >10 years animals, and for strongylosis in the 3–10 years ones. Females were significantly more parasitized than males. A negative correlation between the age and the egg-excretion of ascarids and strongyles was recorded. The autochthonous and the English Pure Blood horses were the most parasitized. We concluded that the infections by helminths, especially the strongyloids, are significantly common in the region, so that greater importance should be given to this situation
