    Mott-insulator phases of non-locally coupled 1D dipolar Bose gases

    We analyze the Mott-insulator phases of dipolar bosonic gases placed in neighboring but unconnected 1D traps. Whereas for short-range interactions the 1D systems are independent, the non-local dipole-dipole interaction induces a direct Mott-insulator to pair-superfluid transition which significantly modifies the boundaries of the lowest Mott-insulator phases. The lowest boundary of the lowest Mott regions becomes progressively constant as a function of the hopping rate, eventually inverting its slope, leading to a re-entrant configuration which is retained in 2D. We discuss the consequences of this effect on the spatial Mott-insulator plateaux in experiments with additional harmonic confinement, showing that anti-intuitively the plateaux may become wider for increasing hopping.     An effective many-body theory for strongly interacting polar molecules

    We derive a general effective many-body theory for bosonic polar molecules in strong interaction regime, which cannot be correctly described by previous theories within the first Born approximation. The effective Hamiltonian has additional interaction terms, which surprisingly reduces the anisotropic features of dipolar interaction near the shape resonance regime. In the 2D system with dipole moment perpendicular to the plane, we find that the phonon dispersion scales as \sqrt{|\bfp|} in the low momentum (\bfp) limit, showing the same low energy properties as a 2D charged Bose gas with Coulomb (1/r1/r) interactions.Comment: Same as published version (11 pages, 2 figure

    Life cycle assessment of hot mix asphalt with recycled concrete aggregates for road pavements construction

    In this study a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted according to a ‘cradle-to-laid’ approach to evaluate the potential environmental impacts related to the use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) as a partial replacement of coarse natural aggregates in the production of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Specifically, three percentages of RCA replacements were analyzed: 15, 30 and 45%. Primary data collected mainly through surveys performed in Colombian contractors from the region of Barranquila were used to model the foreground system. The SimaPro 8.4.0 software was used for modelling the processes analyzed in the case study and all the life cycle inputs and outputs related to the functional unit were characterised during life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) phase into potential impacts according to the TRACI v.2.1 impact assessment methodology. The results of the case study showed that the mixtures incorporating 15 and 30% of RCA can be considered as eco-friendly alternatives to the conventional mixture (i.e. no RCA content), as both allow reductions in all impact categories scores. On the contrary, the mixture that contains 45% of RCA denoted a lower environmental performance than that of the conventional mixture

    An Atypical Cause Of Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome

    Atypical hemolytic syndrome is an extremely rare, life threatening, progressive disease. Approximately one to two cases per million are seen annually in the US (3,4). It is known to be associated with variety of conditions including infections, drugs, autoimmune conditions, vaccination, malignancy, organ transplantation, pregnancy, and metabolic conditions (11,13).We hereby describe a case of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with CABG surgery. A 58 year old female presented to the emergency department (ED) with three days of worsening shortness of breath and cold like symptoms including nausea, vomiting and rhinorrhea. Twenty six days prior to presentation she had undergone Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) for three vessel disease. The physical examination was unremarkable. Labs showed anemia, acute renal injury and thrombocytopenia. A peripheral smear demonstrated over 10 per high-power field of schistocytes. She was presumptively diagnosed with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) and started on plasmapheresis. ADAMSTS-13 was normal and autoimmune workup was negative. After an extensive workup she was diagnosed with Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS). To our knowledge this is the first case of aHUS associated with CABG. In fact, there has been only one other case of aHUS related to cardiac surgery which was found in a child who underwent Tetralogy of Fallot repair (1).     Early Science with the Large Millimetre Telescope: Molecules in the Extreme Outflow of a proto-Planetary Nebula

    Extremely high velocity emission likely related to jets is known to occur in some proto-Planetary Nebulae. However, the molecular complexity of this kinematic component is largely unknown. We observed the known extreme outflow from the proto-Planetary Nebula IRAS 16342-3814, a prototype water fountain, in the full frequency range from 73 to 111 GHz with the RSR receiver on the Large Millimetre Telescope. We detected the molecules SiO, HCN, SO, and 13^{13}CO. All molecular transitions, with the exception of the latter are detected for the first time in this source, and all present emission with velocities up to a few hundred km s−1^{-1}. IRAS 16342-3814 is therefore the only source of this kind presenting extreme outflow activity simultaneously in all these molecules, with SO and SiO emission showing the highest velocities found of these species in proto-Planetary Nebulae. To be confirmed is a tentative weak SO component with a FWHM ∼\sim 700 km s−1^{-1}. The extreme outflow gas consists of dense gas (nH2>_{\rm H_2} > 104.8^{4.8}--105.7^{5.7} cm−3^{-3}), with a mass larger than ∼\sim 0.02--0.15 M⊙_{\odot}. The relatively high abundances of SiO and SO may be an indication of an oxygen-rich extreme high velocity gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letter

    Consumer Behavior Towards Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) Tea in Benguet Province, Northern Philippines

    Sensory evaluation was done with 256 respondents who were willing to participate in the study and chosen through quota sampling based on age and sex. The respondents evaluated pure lemongrass tea and lemongrass with pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) using the research questionnaire given to them. Analysis of variance, factor analysis, and cluster analysis were used to assess a degree of association between different study components.Results show that herbal teas were the most favored drinks among the respondents who strongly believe that these help in digestion and relieve stress. The sensory attributes driving acceptability of lemongrass teas were linked to light and clear green colors, citral aroma, and distinct taste. The high acceptability of lemongrass tea mixed with pandan, a locally appreciated herb, shows future possibilities in the product expansion lines

    Generalized ultrasonic scattering model for arbitrary transducer configurations

    Ultrasonic scattering in polycrystalline media is directly tied to microstructural features. As a result, modeling efforts of scattering from microstructure have been abundant. The inclusion of beam modeling for the ultrasonic transducers greatly simplified the ability to perform quantitative, fully calibrated experiments. In this article, a theoretical scattering model is generalized to allow for arbitrary source and receiver configurations, while accounting for beam behavior through the total propagation path. This extension elucidates the importance and potential of out-of-plane scattering modes in the context of microstructure characterization. The scattering coefficient is explicitly written for the case of statistical isotropy and ellipsoidal grain elongation, with a direct path toward expansion for increased microstructural complexity. Materials with crystallites of any symmetry can be studied with the present model; the numerical results focus on aluminum, titanium, and iron. The amplitude of the scattering response is seen to vary across materials, and to have varying sensitivity to grain elongation and orientation depending on the transducer configuration selected. The model provides a pathway to experimental characterization of microstructure with optimized sensitivity to parameters of interest

    LMT/AzTEC observations of Vega

    Vega is the prototypical debris disc system. Its architecture has been extensively studied at optical to millimetre wavelengths, revealing a near face-on, broad, and smooth disc with multiple distinct components. Recent millimetre-wavelength observations from ALMA spatially resolved the inner edge of the outer, cold planetesimal belt from the star for the first time. Here we present early science imaging observations of the Vega system with the AzTEC instrument on the 32-m LMT, tracing extended emission from the disc out to 150 au from the star. We compare the observations to three models of the planetesimal belt architecture to better determine the profile of the outer belt. A comparison of these potential architectures for the disc does not significantly differentiate between them with the modelling results being similar in many respects to the previous ALMA analysis, but differing in the slope of the outer region of the disc. The measured flux densities are consistent between the LMT (single dish) and ALMA (interferometric) observations after accounting for the differences in wavelength of observation. The LMT observations suggest the outer slope of the planetesimal belt is steeper than was suggested in the ALMA analysis. This would be consistent with the interferometric observations being mostly blind to structure at the disc outer edges, but the overall low signal to noise of the LMT observations does not definitively resolve the structure of the outer planetesimal belt.FK and JPM acknowledge research support by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan under grant MOST107-2119-M-001-031-MY3, and Academia Sinica under grant AS-IA-106-M03.
