Axiomatization and Models of Scientific Theories

In this paper we discuss two approaches to the axiomatization of scien- tific theories in the context of the so called semantic approach, according to which (roughly) a theory can be seen as a class of models. The two approaches are associated respectively to Suppes’ and to da Costa and Chuaqui’s works. We argue that theories can be developed both in a way more akin to the usual mathematical practice (Suppes), in an informal set theoretical environment, writing the set theoretical predicate in the language of set theory itself or, more rigorously (da Costa and Chuaqui), by employing formal languages that help us in writing the postulates to define a class of structures. Both approaches are called internal, for we work within a mathematical framework, here taken to be first-order ZFC. We contrast these approaches with an external one, here discussed briefly. We argue that each one has its strong and weak points, whose discussion is relevant for the philosophical foundations of science

Potentiality and Contradiction in Quantum Mechanics

Following J.-Y.B\'eziau in his pioneer work on non-standard interpretations of the traditional square of opposition, we have applied the abstract structure of the square to study the relation of opposition between states in superposition in orthodox quantum mechanics in \cite{are14}. Our conclusion was that such states are \ita{contraries} (\ita{i.e.} both can be false, but both cannot be true), contradicting previous analyzes that have led to different results, such as those claiming that those states represent \ita{contradictory} properties (\ita{i. e.} they must have opposite truth values). In this chapter we bring the issue once again into the center of the stage, but now discussing the metaphysical presuppositions which underlie each kind of analysis and which lead to each kind of result, discussing in particular the idea that superpositions represent potential contradictions. We shall argue that the analysis according to which states in superposition are contrary rather than contradictory is still more plausible

Does weak discernibility determine metaphysics?

Two entities are weakly discernible when an irreflexive and symmetric relation holds between them. That weak discernibility holds in quantum mechanics is fairly uncontroversial nowadays. The ontological consequences of weak discernibility, however, are far from clear. Part of the literature seems to imply that weak discernibility points to a definite metaphysics to quantum mechanics. In this paper we shall discuss the metaphysical contribution of weak discernibility to quantum mechanics and argue that, contrary to part of current literature, it does not provide for a fully naturalistic determination of metaphysics. A investigação-ação no subprojeto de pedagogia: a utilização da literatura como um instrumento de incentivo a leitura

Compreendemos que as histórias literárias contribuem com a ampliação do repertório para a construção de textos das crianças e para a compreensão de si e do mundo. Desse modo, este trabalho pretende apresentar uma experiência da utilização da literatura no ambiente escolar, fazendo reflexões sobre a temática, e problematizando a utilização da investigação-ação como a metodologia de trabalho utilizada como instrumento de formação de novos professores. Ontology and the mathematization of the scientific enterprise

In this basically expository paper we discuss the role of logic and mathematics in researches concerning the ontology of scientific theories, and we consider the particular case of quantum mechanics. We argue that systems of logic in general, and classical logic in particular, may contribute substantially with the ontology of any theory that has this logic in its base. In the case of quantum mechanics, however, from the point of view of philosophical discussions concerning identity and individuality, those contributions may not be welcome for a specific interpretation, and an alternative system of logic perhaps could be used instead of a classical system. In this sense, we argue that the logic and ontology of a scientific theory may be seen as mutually influencing each other. On the one hand, logic contributes to shape the general features of the ontology of a theory; on the other hand, the theory also puts constraints on the possible understanding of ontology and, respectively, on possible systems of logic that may be the underlying logic of the theory

INCUBADORAS TECNÓLOGICAS DE COOPERATIVAS POPULARES: ATUANDO A PARTIR DA EXTENSÃO UNIVERSITÁRIA

O presente trabalho é um resultado de uma pesquisa sobre o mapeamento das Incubadoras Tecnossociais de Cooperativas Populares (ITCP) realizada no sul do Brasil, cujo objetivo é analisar a situação atual destas. A metodologia utilizada para a realização desta pesquisa foi o método da revisão bibliográfica integrativa seguida pelos dados do mapeamento das incubadoras, construção e qualificação de um questionário quantitativo. O questionário foi aplicado em incubadoras da região sul do Brasil onde foram analisados e processadas as respostas das ITCPs do Rio Grande do Sul em uma Planilha Calc do software livre da LibreOffice. Com a pesquisa, observou-se que os empreendimentos incubados nas ITCPs enfrentam dificuldades no início da incubação, principalmente quanto aos custos de financiamento. Constatou-se também que muitos empreendimentos incubados não possuem legalização de suas atividades. Pôde-se observar que as principais linha de atuação dos empreendimentos incubados são a Economia Solidária, Cooperativas e Agricultura Familiar. Os dados obtidos com a presente pesquisa são de grande relevância para avaliar a situação atual das ITCPs do Rio Grande do Sul, porém é necessário um aprofundamento em futuras pesquisas para entender qualitativamente a situação e como esta pode ser melhorada
