Objective: To describe the experiences and perceptions that dental students have regarding online methodologies, according to scientific evidence. Materials and Method: A search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. The inclusion criteria comprehended publications of a maximum of 5 years of antiquity in English or Spanish, qualitative studies, clinical trials, cohort studies, observational and descriptive studies which examined the experiences and perceptions that dental students had regarding online education methods. Those articles that were not available in full text and those that were not relevant to the purpose of this research were excluded. Results: 967 articles were obtained from the databases, and 22 remained after the elimination of duplicates (102), selection criteria applied (835), and those discarded because they were not in the full-text format or for being considered irrelevant to this research (8). Conclusion: The experiences reported showed a very positive assessment of the students towards online methodologies. Nonetheless, these modifications must be incorporated gradually in dental schools. It cannot yet be considered as a replacement for traditional methods, but rather as a complement to them.

Objective: To identify, according to evidence, the effectiveness of the frenotomy in ankyloglossia for infants in achieving correct breastfeeding. Specific objectives: to identify the consequences of ankyloglossia and/or frenotomy in mothers and infants, describe the ways to perform it, considering its pre and post-operative, and to determine the participation of the dentist in the process. Materials and Method: A critical review of the literature was conducted using Scopus and PubMed databases. The articles included were those written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish with a maximum of 5 years of antiquity, which studied infants with ankyloglossia undergoing frenotomy. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses were excluded. It was not just treatment that was evaluated but also pre and post-operative, both in the mother and the infant. Results: 409 articles were obtained, 138 eliminated in duplicates, selecting 26 after the eligibility criteria, 2 of them were not available, so that finally 24 articles remained, being in-vivo type studies in humans, mainly cohort. Conclusion: The evidence supports that the frenotomy is a safe and effective intervention, which generally allows improving breastfeeding, benefiting both the baby and the mother. However, the existence of an objective diagnostic tool that allows early intervention is still essential, in addition to carrying out a multidisciplinary work that includes the study of the infant's environment.

Evaluation of photodynamic therapy efficacy vs. conventional antifungal therapy in patients with poor-fitting dentures suffering from denture stomatitis. A prospective clinical study

Background: The long-term use of antifungal therapy in denture stomatitis (DS) treatment could be accompanied by antifungal-resistant strain onset, leading to compromised therapeutic procedure and disease reappearance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown the ability to eradicate oral infections and resistance strains. This prospective clinical study aimed to assess the PDT’s effectiveness compared to the conventional treatment on clinical and microbiological parameters in patients with DS without denture wear during the treatment and follow-ups. Methods: Forty-two patients diagnosed with DS were randomly assigned to one-session single PDT application (test group) or conventional antifungal therapy (control group). Clinical and microbiological parameters were assessed and analyzed before and at 3rd, 15th, and 30th day following the treatments. Microbiological samples were analyzed by a Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The data was statistically analyzed. Results: Prior to the treatment, Candida species, including C. albicans (100%), C. glabrata (33%), C. tropicalis (31%), C. krusei (31%) were isolated in all patients. Both treatment procedures demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in C. albicans at all follow-up time intervals (p < 0.05). However, PDT displayed a statistically significant reduction in C. krusei compared to the conventional treatment at all follow-up periods (p < 0.05). Clinical parameters improved considerably in the test group compared to the control group at the 3rd and 15th day of follow-up. Conclusion: One-session single PDT application demonstrated significant improvement in both clinical and microbiological outcomes in a short-term period, resulting in complete Candida spp. eradication compared to conventional antifungal therapy

Galaxy Clusters Associated with Short GRBs. II. Predictions for the Rate of Short GRBs in Field and Cluster Early-Type Galaxies

We determine the relative rates of short GRBs in cluster and field early-type galaxies as a function of the age probability distribution of their progenitors, P(\tau) \propto \tau^n. This analysis takes advantage of the difference in the growth of stellar mass in clusters and in the field, which arises from the combined effects of the galaxy stellar mass function, the early-type fraction, and the dependence of star formation history on mass and environment. This approach complements the use of the early- to late-type host galaxy ratio, with the added benefit that the star formation histories of early-type galaxies are simpler than those of late-type galaxies, and any systematic differences between progenitors in early- and late-type galaxies are removed. We find that the ratio varies from R(cluster)/R(field) ~ 0.5 for n = -2 to ~ 3 for n = 2. Current observations indicate a ratio of about 2, corresponding to n ~ 0 - 1. This is similar to the value inferred from the ratio of short GRBs in early- and late-type hosts, but it differs from the value of n ~ -1 for NS binaries in the Milky Way. We stress that this general approach can be easily modified with improved knowledge of the effects of environment and mass on the build-up of stellar mass, as well as the effect of globular clusters on the short GRB rate. It can also be used to assess the age distribution of Type Ia supernova progenitors.Comment: ApJ accepted versio

(g = e, #, ~) we observe four events, one e+e -~'7 and three #+ ~-??, with the invariant mass of the photon pairs close to 60 GeV. These events were selected from a data sample collected in the L3 detector corresponding to 950000 produced Z°'s. More data are necessary to ascertain the origin of these events

Search for non-minimal Higgs bosons in Z 0 decays

We report on a search for the neutral and charged Higgs bosons predicted by models of spontaneous symmetry breaking with more than one Higgs doublet field. No signals are observed. We set model-independent limits on masses or branching ratios of singly and pair-produced neutral and charged Higgs bosons. In addition, we interpret our results in the framework of a general two-doublet Higgs model and the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47892/1/10052_2005_Article_BF01474331.pd

Measurement of cross sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries at the Z pole and determination of electroweak parameters

    Get PDF
We report on the measurement of the leptonic and hadronic cross sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries at the Z peak with the L3 detector at LEP. The total luminosity of 40.8 pb −1 collected in the years 1990, 1991 and 1992 corresponds to 1.09·10 6 hadronic and 0.98·10 5 leptonic Z decays observed. These data allow us to determine the electroweak parameters. From the cross sections we derive the properties of the Z boson: assuming lepton universality. We obtain an invisible width of Γ inv =496.5±7.9 MeV which, in the Standard Model, corresponds to a number of light neutrino species of N v =2.981±0.050.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47894/1/10052_2005_Article_BF01574160.pd
