    Opinion Dynamics and Communication Networks

    Get PDF
This paper examines the interplay of opinion exchange dynamics and communication network formation. An opinion formation procedure is introduced which is based on an abstract representation of opinions as k-dimensional bitstrings. Individuals interact if the difference in the opinion strings is below a defined similarity threshold dI. Depending on dI, different behaviour of the population is observed: low values result in a state of highly fragmented opinions and higher values yield consensus. The first contribution of this research is to identify the values of parameters dI and k, such that the transition between fragmented opinions and homogeneity takes place. Then, we look at this transition from two perspectives: first by studying the group size distribution and second by analysing the communication network that is formed by the interactions that take place during the simulation. The emerging networks are classified by statistical means and we find that non-trivial social structures emerge from simple rules for individual communication.

Stability Assessment of a Bedding Rock Slope Using Q-slope and Seismic Tomography: A Case Study in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Roads are generally affected by slope failures, and these failures can increase when there are weathered materials and high rainfall. These circumstances occur in the sub-Andean zone of Ecuador. This is the region where the study area is located. The stability of a stratified rock slope, which is affecting a section of highway E45, was evaluated. The study slope is exposed to the road, but the upper part is covered by a soil-type material and dense vegetation that makes it challenging to study. We applied the Q-slope method and seismic tomography; these methods used together worked well, because they allowed to correlate and infer information about the quality of the rock mass, even in a fast and economical way. We also performed core drilling with core recovery in the crown of the slope and SPT test. The slope presented two well-differentiated zones; therefore, Q-slope values were calculated for each of these zones. The results show that the slope is unstable. The application of seismic tomography as an input parameter for calculating Q-slope was important because it allowed evaluating the stability where it is impossible to collect geomechanical information, correlate information taken at the foot of the slope, and define the depth of the bedrock

    Failures in implantology: literature review.

The increasing number of implants placed on patients all over the world shows the importance of this technique, which restores quality of life to people who have tooth loss, aiming at reducing costs and facilitating access to treatment already established for having less than 6% of failure. The knowledge of the failures is of fundamental importance for the search to improve the quality of this treatment and the different protocols and techniques make its success probable. Our work aimed, through the literature review, to unite information contained in books and physical and digital articles about the possible causes that lead the treatment with implants to not have the expected success and with this make more evident what must be done to avoid failure . It was clear from our work that the dentist, equipped with his knowledge, is able to increase the chances of success in implantology by performing a good assessment of the general conditions of the patient and places where the implant will be placed. The choice of the implant is also fundamental, as well as the technique used correctly to insert the screw into the bone. Biosafety during the procedure by the dentist and perfect hygiene by the patient in the postoperative period increase the chances of a good prognosis. The increasing number of implants placed on patients all over the world shows the importance of this technique, which restores quality of life to people who have tooth loss, aiming at reducing costs and facilitating access to treatment already established for having less than 6% of failure. POLICY INTERVENTION AND THE TRADE - OFF BETWEEN GROWTH AND FUNCTIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF INCOME

In opposition to the dominant view that treats growth and distribution as conflicting goals, one can counterargument with the claims of some scope for complementarities among them This paper constructs a model intended to demonstrate that if tax policy is manipulated to ensure that a higher saving ratio is compatible with a greater workers' share in income, a reduction in the degree of distributional inequality can be consistent with faster growth. We are concerned only with the functional distributions of income and the structural form of our model is based on some relevant features of the contributions associated with post-Keynesians economists.

The diversity and sustainability of ornamental plants traded by guarani communities of Misiones Province, Argentina

The study covers ornamental plants species that are traded by two Guarani communities in Argentina. The trade is described, as well as the frequency, abundance and diversity of plants for sale on roadside stalls, along with the income they generate. Harvested and unharvested areas of forest are compared; the relative impacts of Guarani harvest and commercial timber extraction on ornamental plants are evaluated, and some traditional Guarani beliefs are described that regulate the harvest of ornamental plants by the Guarani.Fil: Keller, Hector Alejandro. Real-time human activity monitoring exploring multiple vision sensors

    Get PDF
In this paper, we describe the monitoring of human activity in an indoor environment through the use of multiple vision sensors. The system described in this paper is made up of three cameras. Two of these cameras are active and are part of a binocular system. They operate either as a set of three static cameras or as a set of one fixed camera and an active binocular vision system. The human activity is monitored by extracting several parameters that are useful for their classification. The system enables the creation of a record based on the type of activity. These logs can be selectively accessed and provide images of the humans in specific areas.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6V16-4379G7B-B/1/216c3ddb70ad57a4491b08864d1b296

Gap junction reduction in cardiomyocytes following transforming growth factor- beta treatment and Trypanosoma cruzi infection

Gap junction connexin-43 (Cx43) molecules are responsible for electrical impulse conduction in the heart and are affected by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). This cytokine increases during Trypanosoma cruzi infection, modulating fibrosis and the parasite cell cycle. We studied Cx43 expression in cardiomyocytes exposed or not to TGF-beta T. cruzi, or SB-431542, an inhibitor of TGF-beta receptor type I (ALK-5). Cx43 expression was also examined in hearts with dilated cardiopathy from chronic Chagas disease patients, in which TGF-beta signalling had been shown previously to be highly activated. We demonstrated that TGF-beta treatment induced disorganised gap junctions in non-infected cardiomyocytes, leading to a punctate, diffuse and non-uniform Cx43 staining. A similar pattern was detected in T. cruzi-infected cardiomyocytes concomitant with high TGF-beta secretion. Both results were reversed if the cells were incubated with SB-431542. Similar tests were performed using human chronic chagasic patients and we confirmed a down-regulation of Cx43 expression, an altered distribution of plaques in the heart and a significant reduction in the number and length of Cx43 plaques, which correlated negatively with cardiomegaly. We conclude that elevated TGF-beta levels during T. cruzi infection promote heart fibrosis and disorganise gap junctions, possibly contributing to abnormal impulse conduction and arrhythmia that characterise severe cardiopathy in Chagas disease
