The problem to investigate is the permanent disequilibrium of Mexican commercial balance of cattle heads and meat regarding United States during the period 1993-2007. The objective is shows that the inequality productive structure on cattle heads and meat that exists between Mexico and American Union, through commercial exchange of those products impact the commercial balance. The methodology used was the consult of international trade and productive aspects of cattle to both countries and the use of structuralism economic theory for the information analysis. The results obtained shows that the inequality structure between both nations (United States as centre and Mexico as periphery) on items such as herd size; integration to meat industry; meat production; carcass weight and that the most important part of the mexican exports are raw materials with few add worth, though commercial exchange impacts on permanent external disequilibrium for mexican commercial balance of cattle heads and meat.Structure, External Disequilibrium, Centre, Periphery, Cattle, Heard, Meat., Agribusiness,

There are examples of common clinical conditions that clinical signals are related to alterations in muscle tone, including myofascial pain syndrome. OBJECTIVE: to discuss the application of surface EMG to detect effect of miofascial trigger point (MTP) on neuromuscular activity at rest and maximum voluntary contraction of the trapezoid muscle. METHODS: Fifty-six subjects participated in the study and were divided into two groups: Healthy group (n = 28), with subjects who necessarily did not present MTP, and PAIN group (n = 28), with subjects who necessarily had MTP. RESULTS: The EMG signal was significantly higher in the muscle portion containing MTP than in the healthy muscle portion in PAIN group and than Healthy group (26,56 ± 44,54, 5,39 ± 6,29 and 1,56 ± 0,76, respectively, p = 0,0001) during rest. In addition, a higher intensity of the EMG signal was observed in subjects with active MTP than in latent MTP (17,85 ± 30,25 versus 3,74 ± 1,52, p = 0,04. Besides, the subjects who presented autonomic phenomena had higher EMG signal than those who had no autonomic phenomena (16,78 ± 28,44 versus 3,51 ± 3,65. CONCLUSION: The surface EMG is reliable to measure the muscular activity of the MTP, mainly at rest condition

The Psychedelic State Induced by Ayahuasca Modulates the Activity and Connectivity of the Default Mode Network

The experiences induced by psychedelics share a wide variety of subjective features, related to the complex changes in perception and cognition induced by this class of drugs. A remarkable increase in introspection is at the core of these altered states of consciousness. Self-oriented mental activity has been consistently linked to the Default Mode Network (DMN), a set of brain regions more active during rest than during the execution of a goal-directed task. Here we used fMRI technique to inspect the DMN during the psychedelic state induced by Ayahuasca in ten experienced subjects. Ayahuasca is a potion traditionally used by Amazonian Amerindians composed by a mixture of compounds that increase monoaminergic transmission. In particular, we examined whether Ayahuasca changes the activity and connectivity of the DMN and the connection between the DMN and the task-positive network (TPN). Ayahuasca caused a significant decrease in activity through most parts of the DMN, including its most consistent hubs: the Posterior Cingulate Cortex (PCC)/Precuneus and the medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC). Functional connectivity within the PCC/Precuneus decreased after Ayahuasca intake. No significant change was observed in the DMN-TPN orthogonality. Altogether, our results support the notion that the altered state of consciousness induced by Ayahuasca, like those induced by psilocybin (another serotonergic psychedelic), meditation and sleep, is linked to the modulation of the activity and the connectivity of the DMN.The Brazilian Federal Agencies: CNPq, CAPES; FINEP; The Sao Paulo State financial agency (FAPESP)

INTRODUCTION: Thromboembolic complications are important risk factors for graft failure and worse renal transplantation outcome. Patients with thrombophilic disorders have a higher risk of thromboembolic complications. The prevalence of thrombophilic disorders and the associated risk for graft failure and for intravascular thrombosis were analyzed in renal transplant recipients. METHODS: This is a cohort study of 388 adult recipients investigated regarding the presence of thrombophilia, through the search for anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) via ELISA and FV G1691A and PT G20210A gene mutations by multiplex PCR. RESULTS: Thrombophilic disorders were identified in 25.8% of the patients. The 2-year graft survival was similar among patients with and without thrombophilic disorder (94% versus 94%, p = 0.53), and so was the survival free of intravascular thrombosis (97% versus 97%, p = 0.83). The prevalence of intravascular thrombosis was similar in both groups (3% versus 3.5%, p = 0.82). Patients with previous kidney transplantation had a higher risk of graft failure (OR 20.8, p < 0.001) and of intravascular thrombosis (OR 6.8, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalences of FV G1691A and PT G20210A gene mutations in this cohort of patients were similar to those of the general non-transplanted population. The prevalence of aCL antibodies was higher in this cohort than that observed in healthy individuals. The thrombophilic markers studied did not predict the medium-term survival of renal transplant.INTRODUÇÃO: Complicações tromboembólicas são importantes fatores de risco para perda do enxerto e pior evolução após o transplante renal.

Global evapotranspiration datasets assessment using water balance in South America

    Get PDF
Evapotranspiration (ET) connects the land to the atmosphere, linking water, energy, and carbon cycles. ET is an essential climate variable with a fundamental importance, and accurate assessments of the spatiotemporal trends and variability in ET are needed from regional to continental scales. This study compared eight global actual ET datasets (ETgl) and the average actual ET ensemble (ETens) based on remote sensing, climate reanalysis, land-surface, and biophysical models to ET computed from basin-scale water balance (ETwb) in South America on monthly time scale. The 50 small-to-large basins covered major rivers and different biomes and climate types. We also examined the magnitude, seasonality, and interannual variability of ET, comparing ETgl and ETens with ETwb. Global ET datasets were evaluated between 2003 and 2014 from the following datasets: Breathing Earth System Simulator (BESS), ECMWF Reanalysis 5 (ERA5), Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), MOD16, Penman–Monteith–Leuning (PML), Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) and Terra Climate. By using ETwb as a basis for comparison, correlation coefficients ranged from 0.45 (SSEBop) to 0.60 (ETens), and RMSE ranged from 35.6 (ETens) to 40.5 mm·month⁻¹(MOD16). Overall, ETgl estimates ranged from 0 to 150 mm·month−1 in most basins in South America, while ETwb estimates showed maximum rates up to 250 mm·month⁻¹. Tgl varied by hydroclimatic regions: (i) basins located in humid climates with low seasonality in precipitation, including the Amazon, Uruguay, and South Atlantic basins, yielded weak correlation coefficients between monthly ETgl and ETwb, and (ii) tropical and semiarid basins (areas where precipitation demonstrates a strong seasonality, as in the São Francisco, Northeast Atlantic, Paraná/Paraguay, and Tocantins basins) yielded moderate-to-strong correlation coefficients. An assessment of the interannual variability demonstrated a disagreement between ETgl and ETwb in the humid tropics (in the Amazon), with ETgl showing a wide range of interannual variability. However, in tropical, subtropical, and semiarid climates, including the Tocantins, São Francisco, Paraná, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Atlantic basins (Northeast, East, and South), we found a stronger agreement between ETgl and ETwb for interannual variability. Assessing ET datasets enables the understanding of land–atmosphere exchanges in South America, to improvement of ET estimation and monitoring for water management

    Get PDF
Introduction: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is an inherited neuropathy that presents two main forms - type 1 and type 2 -, differentiated by the speed of the nervous conduction. Our goal was to assess sleep in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and its relationship with pain perception and nocturnal cramps. Material and Methods: This was a case-control study. The case group was composed of 10 volunteers diagnosed with the type 1 and 23 with the type 2. The control group was composed of 22 individuals from the same family matched by age and gender. Volunteers underwent clinical screening to assess the presence of nocturnal cramps and filled the brief pain inventory, the Chalder fatigue scale, the Epworth sleepiness scale, and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. Sleep was evaluated by actigraphy. Results: Type 2 patients presented a more severe perception of pain and fatigue, more time spend awake after sleep onset, and had lower sleep efficiency. The individuals who reported nocturnal cramps also had worse perception of pain, reduced sleep latency, and increased sleep fragmentation. Conclusion: The Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2 was related with worse sleep quality, perception of pain, and fatigue and these parameters were negatively related

The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the main risk factors for pressure injuries related to hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit. This is a bibliographical review of exploratory, quantitative and qualitative scientific literature. To select the sample, a search was made of the electronic databases LILACS and BDENF, from which a careful analysis was carried out, enabling the selection of twenty articles to be used to identify the risks of pressure injury in the elderly in the intensive care unit. The data was collected between March and May of this year. It is understood that there is a high probability of PPI developing in elderly patients after 60 years of age. The average length of hospitalization and pathologies such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus are key factors in the appearance of PI. According to the publications researched, it can be concluded that PPLs are a problem in hospital units that care for critically ill patients due to the permanent or temporary reduction in motility that exists in many cases. &nbsp
