The operational experience obtained for the GT404-4 gas turbine engines in the intercity and intracity Bus Demonstration Programs is described for the period January 1980 through September 1981. Support for the engines and automatic transmissions involved in this program provided engineering and field service, spare parts and tools, training, and factory overhauls. the Greyhound (intercity) coaches accumulated 183,054 mi (294,595 km) and 5154 hr of total operation. The Baltimore Transit (intracity) coaches accumulated 40,567 mi (65,285 km) and 1840 hr of total operation. In service, the turbine powered Greyhound and Transit coaches achieved approximately 25% and 40% lower fuel mileage, respectively, than did the production diesel powered coaches. The gas turbine engine will require the advanced ceramic development currently being sponsored by the DOE and NASA to achieve fuel economy equivalent not only to that of today's diesel engines but also to the projected fuel economy of the advanced diesel engines of the 1990s. Sufficient experience was not achieved with the coaches prior to the start of service to identify and eliminate many of the problems associated with the startup of new equipment. Because of these problems, the mean miles between incident were unacceptably low. The future gas turbine system should be developed sufficiently to establish satisfactory durability prior to evaluation in revenue service. Commercialization of the gas turbine bus engine remains a viable goal for the future

Systematic assessment of HER2/neu in gynecologic neoplasms, an institutional experience.

BackgroundHER2/neu overexpression and/or amplification has been widely studied in a number of solid tumors, primarily in the breast. In gynecologic neoplasms, determination of HER2/neu status has not been well studied as a predictive biomarker in anti-HER2/neu treatment.MethodsWe systematically evaluated the HER2/neu reactions by immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization in malignant gynecologic neoplasms as experienced in our institution.ResultsThe HER2/neu overexpression or amplification occurred in 8 % of the cancers of the gynecological organs in our series. Majority of the HER2/neu overexpression and/or amplification occurred in clear cell (27 %) and serous (11 %) carcinomas. HER2/neu positivity was also seen in undifferentiated as well as in mixed clear cell and serous carcinomas. Discordant IHC and FISH results (positive by FISH but not IHC) was seen in 2 cases. Majority of the HER2/neu overexpression and/or amplification occurs in the endometrium rather than the ovary. Heterogeneity of the HER2/neu by IHC staining was in < 2 % of the tumors in our series.ConclusionsWe recommend the HER2/neu studies on MĂŒllerian carcinomas of clear cell, serous, and undifferentiated types, particularly when they arise in the endometrium. Since there are some discordant IHC/FISH results, we also propose performing the HER2/neu testing by FISH when the IHC score is less than 3 +

Vortices, circumfluence, symmetry groups and Darboux transformations of the (2+1)-dimensional Euler equation

The Euler equation (EE) is one of the basic equations in many physical fields such as fluids, plasmas, condensed matter, astrophysics, oceanic and atmospheric dynamics. A symmetry group theorem of the (2+1)-dimensional EE is obtained via a simple direct method which is thus utilized to find \em exact analytical \rm vortex and circumfluence solutions. A weak Darboux transformation theorem of the (2+1)-dimensional EE can be obtained for \em arbitrary spectral parameter \rm from the general symmetry group theorem. \rm Possible applications of the vortex and circumfluence solutions to tropical cyclones, especially Hurricane Katrina 2005, are demonstrated.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure

COPING STRATEGIES OF THE FARM LABORERS TOWARD FARM MECHANIZATION IN CENTRAL, SAN JOSE, OCCIDENTAL MINDORO

This descriptive study was conducted to determine the coping strategies of farm laborers in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro towards farm mechanization. It was conducted at Barangay Central, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, one of the top rice producing barangays in the province. The 123 of the 215 farm laborers listed in the different Kabesilya or farmers labor group were selected using simple random sampling. The farm laborers were engaged in planting and harvesting of rice for at least three years in Central, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. The researcher used an interview schedule in gathering data. The study used descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency, and percentage. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was also used. Result shows that the farm laborers were in their middle aged, literate and with medium household size. The farm laborers generally “agree” that farm mechanization had affected their employment, food security level, education of children, monthly income, and agricultural production operations. The farm laborers “moderately practiced” the different coping strategies to meet the undesired effect of farm mechanization. Further, the “highly practiced” coping strategies were minimizing food expenses and seasonal migration of some household members to find odd jobs. Moreover, years spent in formal education and household size has a significant relationship on the extent of which farm laborers experience the effect of farm mechanization. Years spent in formal education have significant relationship on the coping strategies employed by farm laborers on advent of farm mechanization in the area

Producing the docile body: analysing Local Area Under-performance Inspection (LAUI)

    Get PDF
Sir Michael Wilshaw, the head of the Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED), declared a 'new wave' of Local Area Under-performance Inspections (LAUI) of schools 'denying children the standard of education they deserve'. This paper examines how the threat of LAUI played out over three mathematics lessons taught by a teacher in her first year in the profession. A Foucauldian approach is mobilised with regard to disciplinary power and 'docile bodies'. The paper argues that, in the case in point, LAUI was a tool mediating performative conditions and, ultimately, the docile body. The paper will be of concern to policy sociologists, teachers, school leaders, and those interested in school inspection

{\it ProtoEXIST1} is a pathfinder for the {\it EXIST-HET}, a coded aperture hard X-ray telescope with a 4.5 m2^2 CZT detector plane a 90×\times70 degree field of view to be flown as the primary instrument on the {\it EXIST} mission and is intended to monitor the full sky every 3 h in an effort to locate GRBs and other high energy transients. {\it ProtoEXIST1} consists of a 256 cm2^2 tiled CZT detector plane containing 4096 pixels composed of an 8×\times8 array of individual 1.95 cm ×\times 1.95 cm ×\times 0.5 cm CZT detector modules each with a 8 ×\times 8 pixilated anode configured as a coded aperture telescope with a fully coded 10∘×10∘10^\circ\times10^\circ field of view employing passive side shielding and an active CsI anti-coincidence rear shield, recently completed its maiden flight out of Ft. Sumner, NM on the 9th of October 2009. During the duration of its 6 hour flight on-board calibration of the detector plane was carried out utilizing a single tagged 198.8 nCi Am-241 source along with the simultaneous measurement of the background spectrum and an observation of Cygnus X-1. Here we recount the events of the flight and report on the detector performance in a near space environment. We also briefly discuss {\it ProtoEXIST2}: the next stage of detector development which employs the {\it NuSTAR} ASIC enabling finer (32×\times32) anode pixilation. When completed {\it ProtoEXIST2} will consist of a 256 cm2^2 tiled array and be flown simultaneously with the ProtoEXIST1 telescope

Wigs, disguises and child's play : solidarity in teacher education

    Get PDF
It is generally acknowledged that much contemporary education takes place within a dominant audit culture, in which accountability becomes a powerful driver of educational practices. In this culture both pupils and teachers risk being configured as a means to an assessment and target-driven end: pupils are schooled within a particular paradigm of education. The article discusses some ethical issues raised by such schooling, particularly the tensions arising for teachers, and by implication, teacher educators who prepare and support teachers for work in situations where vocational aims and beliefs may be in in conflict with instrumentalist aims. The article offers De Certeau’s concept of ‘la perruque’ to suggest an opening to playful engagement for human ends in education, as a way of contending with and managing the tensions generated. I use the concept to recover a concept of solidarity for teacher educators and teachers to enable ethical teaching in difficult times
