The irruption of the tourist rental, like the one offered on Airbnb, has brought profound changes around housing and urban spaces. Madrid has become the hand of the tourist rental, among other reasons, in a successful touristic city. This article analyses the proliferation of tourist rentals in the Central district of Madrid and its impact on residential rentals. In this case, as in other European and North American cities, the tourist exploitation of the houses has allowed to open the rent gap, while the rental price of the houses has skyrocketed.

Since the outbreak of the global crisis in 2008, the touristification of the Spanish economy has intensified. Within this context, the city of Madrid has also gained power as a tourist destination. The paper analyses the tensions between tourist rental and residential rental in the city of Madrid. This study was carried out using spatial analysis, statistics and cartographic techniques, enablaing us to visualize and quantify the variables related to tourist and residential rental activity in the city. Although it is true that today there are tourist rental properties in every district of Madrid following a spatial pattern in the form of an oil stain, it is in the old town where more than the half of the total of tourist rental properties offered on Airbnb are located. This paper aims to: 1) establish the spatial patterns of tourist rental activity, based on the analysis of a sample of Airbnb’s offer, in the city of Madrid; 2) estimate the spatial distribution of residential rental properties and identify where they clash with tourist rentals; 3) evaluate the effects of the regulatory measures related to the tourist use of homes. The study concludes that the tourist rental business carried out in the city of Madrid follows a pattern of intensive exploitation, where the old town is the nucleus of this activity, constituting the place of greatest confrontation between the residential rental and the touristic rental markets

Effect of the particle size and solids volume fraction on the thermal degradation behaviour of Invar 36 feedstocks

    Get PDF
Degradation kinetics and the thermal stability of Invar 36 powder injection moulding feedstocks (PIM) based on cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) binders were investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis (STA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The initial decomposition temperature (IDT) and the integral procedure decomposition temperature (IPDT) were used to analyse the thermal stability of the binder system as a function of the solid loading content and powder particle size. The degradation kinetics was studied, and the process apparent activation energies were assessed using isoconversional methods. All the methodologies revealed changes in the thermal degradation behaviours of the feedstocks for solid loadings that were previously determined to correspond to optimal solid loadings using other experimental procedures. The studies also contrast previous similar findings with a ceramic powder. Therefore these results strengthen the proposal of thermodynamic degradation studies of feedstocks as an alternative or complementary technique to determine optimal solid loading contents in metal injection moulding (MIM).The authors a wish to thank GUZMÁN GLOBAL S.L. and MIM TECH ALFA for their collaboration on the ECOPIM project (ref. Evaluation of primary care responsiveness by people with mental illness in Spain.

    Get PDF
Background: The health system responsiveness is a concept developed by the World Health Organization that measures patients’ expectations for the non-medical care they receive. The aim of this study is to assess primary care responsiveness as seen by people with mental illness and to analyse the factors associated with poor responsiveness. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 426 people with mental illness who had attended primary care consultations at least once in the previous 12 months. The responsiveness of the health system was determined through the short questionnaire “Multi-country Survey Study on Health and Health Systems Responsiveness”. Differences in responsiveness by sociodemographic characteristics were compared through the Chi-squared test. Logistic regression identified the factors associated with poor responsiveness. Results: Overall responsiveness was measured as good by 77.4% of patients, being this probability higher in the domains: dignity, confidentiality, and communication. The most valued domains by people with mental illness were prompt attention (42.4%), dignity (30.1%), and communication (17%). Only prompt attention scored high importance and poor responsiveness. In patients with an income lower than 900 euros per month and low level of studies, the probability of poor confidentiality responsiveness was multiplied by 3 and 2.7 respectively. Conclusions: People with mental illness perceive good responsiveness from primary care in terms of dignity, confidentiality, and communication. Prompt attention, as the domain of greatest importance and worst valuation, should be prioritised through the implementation of organisational measures in health centres to reduce waiting times, especially in urban areas.post-print968 K

Primary tooth abscess caused by Mycobacterium bovis in an immunocompetent child

Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic disease, and although its incidence has dramatically decreased in developed countries where effective control measures are applied, it still remains a potential health hazard in the developing world. Tuberculosis of the oral cavity is extremely rare and is usually secondary to pulmonary involvement. We present the unusual case of an immunocompetent 6-year-old child residing in an urban area with primary oral tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis, which was confirmed by the application of a molecular genetic approach. M. bovis belongs to Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex which comprises species with close genetic relationship, and for this reason, the use of new molecular techniques is a useful tool for the differentiation at species level of the closely related members of this complex

The experience presented is an activity for preschool students. The aim is to arouse their scientific curiosity and encourage collaboration among members of the educational community by participating students' parents, and students and teachers from the Teacher Training College ‘Sagrada Familia’ in Úbeda. The experience consisted of a day of workshops for preschool students from the state school "San Ginés de la Jara" in Sabiote (Jaén). In those workshops the students discovered scientific phenomena through experiments. A total of four workshops were carried out. They were based on scientific methodology in which children first observe, then formulate hypotheses, check the phenomenon and, finally, draw a conclusion. To study the initiation to scientific curiosity in the group of children we used the qualitative technique of text production. Also, as the experience was designed as a training project through the collaborative work of several sectors of the community, we decided to study the evolution in the correlation between theory and practice that trainee teachers had by means of a pretest-posttest research design with a single group, on the basis of a questionnaire on solving problematic scientific situations. In the same way, we used a pretest-posttest design based on a questionnaire with open-ended questions to analyze whether the family context was a collaborative environment to foster scientific curiosity and to contribute to its development in a setting other than the school. The results show that, after the intervention, a significant group of children remind one or more of the experiments of the workshops and are able to give a scientific explanation of them. The information drawn from the data collected in the family setting expand the results mentioned before, since it shows that, in some homes, children have applied scientific knowledge and, thus, the family context has become a collaborative environment to encourage scientific curiosity. Besides, the analysis of the data collected from trainee teachers show that most of them are capable of linking theory and practice after the experience. Key words: Scientific methodology, collaborative work, scientific curiosity, initial training, permanent training.
