    Cartesianisms and spinozisms : towards a theory of possible histories in philosophy

    Translation by Pedro H. G. Muniz The history of philosophy is generally identified with an internalist and contextualist study of philosophical texts. Sometimes historiography is included; in that case, a first step is made to understand that several scenarios of the same text are possible, and why. The aim of this contribution is to open windows even more widely. It suggests including in the history of philosophy the history of its receptions and actualizations, in order to lay the foundations of a theory of possible histories. The figure of Descartes is a paradigmatic case to test this theory. By taking advantage of the methodological advances of the social sciences, intellectual history or even analytic philosophy, this history of revived philosophy thus reveals all its philosophical potential

    The lasting effects of the debate over canon-formation during the 1980s affected the whole field of Humanities, which became increasingly engaged in interrogating the origin and function of the Western canon (Gorak 1991; Searle 1990). In philosophy, a great deal of criticism was, as a result, directed at the traditional narrative of seventeenth-and eighteenth-century philosophies—a critique informed by postcolonialism (Park 2013) as well as feminist historiography (Shapiro 2016). D. F. Norton (1981), L. Loeb (1981) and many others1 attempted to demonstrate the weaknesses of the tripartite division between rationalism, empiricism and critical philosophy.2 As time went on, symptoms of dissatisfaction with what has been called the “standard narrative” ( Vanzo 2013) and the “epistemological par-adigm” (Haakonssen 2004, 2006) only increased. Indeed, at present, a consensus has been reached that the narrative of the antagonism between “Continental rationalism” and “British empiricism”, and the consequent Aufhebung provided by “German critical philosophy,” has been unable to make sense of the complexity, variety and dynamics of early modern.Fil: Antoine-Mahut, Delphine.     À l’heure des humanités numériques mettant les textes originaux à disposition de tous ; et dans un contexte d’intense travail collectif sur de nouvelles éditions scientifiques des philosophes du passé, le cas de Victor Cousin pose ainsi de manière particulièrement aiguë la question de l’articulation de ces deux dimensions, politique et philosophique, d’une pratique académique que l’on pourrait être tenté de décrire comme le degré zéro de la réception. À celui ou celle qui soutiendrait qu’éditer, c’est se borner à donner au public les textes « authentiques », tels qu’ils furent rédigés de la main même de leur auteur, Cousin nous invite à répondre que ce travail même pourrait être une médiation décisive traduisant un engagement et fournissant un outil critique permettant de penser une actualité, voire d’y agir. Le cas Cousin, autrement dit, met en tension une conception de la réception comprise comme publication impartiale et une réception de part en part traversée par l’exigence d’actualisation
