Behavioural and electrophysiological characterisation of experimentally induced osteoarthritis and neuropathy in C57Bl/6 mice
Background: Osteoarthritis is a widespread condition affecting the elderly where similar to 70-90% of over 75 year olds are affected, representing one of the largest cost burdens to healthcare in the western world. The monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) osteoarthritis model has been well described in the rat especially in terms of the pathological progression of the disease and more recently pain behaviour. In this study, we characterise, for the first time, MIA induced osteoarthritis in mice and compare it with nerve-injured mice (partial sciatic nerve injury), using both behavioural and in vivo electrophysiological measurements. These approaches uniquely allow the threshold and suprathreshold measures to many modalities to be quantified and so form a basis for improving and expanding transgenic studies.Results: Significant mechanical hypersensitivity was observed in the ipsilateral hindpaw in MIA injected mice at all observed time points following infrapetellar MIA injection (p < 0.05). The mechanical hypersensitivity exhibited a partial biphasic temporal pattern, but thermal hypersensitivity was absent. Electrically-evoked dorsal horn neuronal responses in MIA injected mice were significantly elevated (p < 0.05) with respect to A- and C-fibre firing, input, pinch and noxious von Frey (26 and 60 g). No significant changes in A- or C-fibre thresholds were observed. Nerve-injured mice displayed significant behavioural thermal and mechanical hypersensitivity (p < 0.05) and evoked dorsal horn responses were significantly increased with respect to C-fibre firing, pinch and wind-up (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The MIA model of osteoarthritic pain in mice displays behavioural characteristics similar to those observed in rats. Changes in both behavioural measures and neuronal activity from the paw, suggest that central changes are involved in this pain state, although a role for peripheral drives is also likely. Moreover, the behavioural and neuronal measures in these two pain models showed overlapping alterations in terms of certain neuronal measures and mechanical sensitivity despite their very different pathologies and a loss of input in neuropathy, suggesting some commonalities in the central processing of different peripheral pain states. This murine model of osteoarthritis will allow the exploitation of knock out animals to better understand underlying mechanisms and identify novel molecular targets
AMI-LA radio continuum observations of Spitzer c2d small clouds and cores: Perseus region
We present deep radio continuum observations of the cores identified as
deeply embedded young stellar objects in the Perseus molecular cloud by the
Spitzer c2d programme at a wavelength of 1.8 cm with the Arcminute Microkelvin
Imager Large Array (AMI-LA). We detect 72% of Class 0 objects from this sample
and 31% of Class I objects. No starless cores are detected. We use the flux
densities measured from these data to improve constraints on the correlations
between radio luminosity and bolometric luminosity, infrared luminosity and,
where measured, outflow force. We discuss the differing behaviour of these
objects as a function of protostellar class and investigate the differences in
radio emission as a function of core mass. Two of four possible very low

High-radiation-zone design of the FMIT high-energy beam transport
The Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) deuteron linac, operating at 35 MeV and 100 mA continuous duty, is expected to spill 3 ..mu..A/m and to lose 10 ..mu..A at specific bending-magnet positions. The major impact of this spill will be felt in the High-Energy Beam Transport (HEBT), where many beam-line components must be maintained. A modular design concept, that uses segmented termination panels remotely located from the modules, is being employed. Radiation-hardened quadrupoles can be opened, clamshell fashion, to release the water-cooled beam tube replacement if there is beam damage or lithium contamination from the target. Termination panels contain electrical, water, and instrumentation fittings to service the module, and are positioned to allow room for neutron-absorbing shielding between the beamline and the panel. The modular construction allows laboratory prealignment and check-out of all components on a structural carriage and is adaptable to supporting gamma shields
The Political Economy of Non-Traditional Security: Explaining the Governance of Avian Influenza in Indonesia
Given the common association of non-traditional security (NTS) problems with globalisation, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how the political economy context of given NTS issues shape how they are securitised and managed in practice. We argue that security and its governance are always highly contested because different modes of security governance invariably privilege particular interests and normative agendas in state and society, which relate directly to the political economy. Drawing on critical political geography, we argue that, because NTS issues are perceived as at least potentially transnational, their securitisation often involves strategic attempts by actors and coalitions to ‘rescale’ their governance beyond the national political and institutional arenas, into new, expert-dominated modes of governance. Such efforts are often resisted by other coalitions, for which this rescaling is deleterious. As evidenced by a case study of avian influenza in Indonesia, particular governance outcomes depend upon the nature of the coalitions assembled for and against rescaling in specific situations, while these coalitions’ make-up and relative strength is shaped by the political economy of the industries that rescaling would affect, viewed against the broader backdrop of state-society relations

Such methods and systems can perform orbit determination of GNSS satellites, orbit determination of satellites carrying GNSS receivers, positioning of GNSS receivers, and environmental monitoring with GNSS data
Data hosting infrastructure for primary biodiversity data

The definitive version was published in BMC Bioinformatics 12 Suppl. 15 (2011): S5, doi:10.1186/1471-2105-12-S15-S5.Today, an unprecedented volume of primary biodiversity data are being generated worldwide, yet significant amounts of these data have been and will continue to be lost after the conclusion of the projects tasked with collecting them. To get the most value out of these data it is imperative to seek a solution whereby these data are rescued, archived and made available to the biodiversity community. To this end, the biodiversity informatics community requires investment in processes and infrastructure to mitigate data loss and provide solutions for long-term hosting and sharing of biodiversity data. We review the current state of biodiversity data hosting and investigate the technological and sociological barriers to proper data management. We further explore the rescuing and re-hosting of legacy data, the state of existing toolsets and propose a future direction for the development of new discovery tools. We also explore the role of data standards and licensing in the context of data hosting and preservation. We provide five recommendations for the biodiversity community that will foster better data preservation and access: (1) encourage the community's use of data standards, (2) promote the public domain licensing of data, (3) establish a community of those involved in data hosting and archival, (4) establish hosting centers for biodiversity data, and (5) develop tools for data discovery. The community's adoption of standards and development of tools to enable data discovery is essential to sustainable data preservation. Furthermore, the increased adoption of open content licensing, the establishment of data hosting infrastructure and the creation of a data hosting and archiving community are all necessary steps towards the community ensuring that data archival policies become standardized
AMI Large Array radio continuum observations of Spitzer c2d small clouds and cores
We perform deep 1.8 cm radio continuum imaging towards thirteen protostellar
regions selected from the Spitzer c2d small clouds and cores programme at high
resolution (25") in order to detect and quantify the cm-wave emission from
deeply embedded young protostars. Within these regions we detect fifteen
compact radio sources which we identify as radio protostars including two
probable new detections. The sample is in general of low bolometric luminosity
and contains several of the newly detected VeLLO sources. We determine the 1.8
cm radio luminosity to bolometric luminosity correlation, L_rad -L_bol, for the
sample and discuss the nature of the radio emission in terms of the available
sources of ionized gas. We also investigate the L_rad-L_IR correlation and
suggest that radio flux density may be used as a proxy for the internal
luminosity of low luminosity protostars.Comment: submitted MNRA
AMI-LA radio continuum observations of Spitzer c2d small clouds and cores: Serpens region
We present deep radio continuum observations of the cores identified as
deeply embedded young stellar objects in the Serpens molecular cloud by the
Spitzer c2d programme at a wavelength of 1.8cm with the Arcminute Microkelvin
Imager Large Array (AMI-LA). These observations have a resolution of ~30arcsec
and an average sensitivity of 19microJy/beam. The targets are predominantly
Class I sources, and we find the detection rate for Class I objects in this
sample to be low (18%) compared to that of Class 0 objects (67%), consistent
with previous works. For detected objects we examine correlations of radio
luminosity with bolometric luminosity and envelope mass and find that these
data support correlations found by previous samples, but do not show any
indiction of the evolutionary divide hinted at by similar data from the Perseus
molecular cloud when comparing radio luminosity with envelope mass. We conclude
that envelope mass provides a better indicator for radio luminosity than
bolometric luminosity, based on the distribution of deviations from the two
correlations. Combining these new data with archival 3.6cm flux densities we
also examine the spectral indices of these objects and find an average spectral
index of 0.53+/-1.14, consistent with the canonical value for a partially
optically thick spherical or collimated stellar wind. However, we caution that
possible inter-epoch variability limits the usefulness of this value, and such
variability is supported by our identification of a possible flare in the radio
history of Serpens SMM 1.Comment: accepted MNRA
