Although the literature points towards the need to assess the work conditions and the social and familiar support of patients submitted to BMT, few Brazilian data are available about the influence of the socio-economic profile on the quality of life. Results of international studies about the association between these variables and post-BMT re-adaptation are inconclusive. This study aims to identify possible relationships between income, work and quality of life in patients submitted to BMT. The study sample consisted of 62 adult patients, with an average adaptation period of 4.3 years after transplant. To collect data, we used: the Socio-economic Assessment Instrument, Post-TMO Recovery Interview, SF-36 and FACT-BMT. Results showed that 43.5% of the patients had a family income of up to two minimum wages and 46.7% of the patients were absent from work at some time during the follow-up. A significant relationship was observed between income, patient's quality of life, feeling of personal competence and psychological adjustment

The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effects of Zn fertilizer application methods and fungicides with or without Zn on potato plant growth, tuber yield and nutrient contents. The experiment was installed in the Horta Nova of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa with the Monalisa cultivar on a cambic Red-yellow Podzolic, containing 6.9 mg dm-3 of Zn extracted by Mehlich-1. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block with four replications in a split plot design. The fungicide spray programs (with or without Zn) were done in the main plots and the zinc fertilizer application methods (control, Zn in the soil, Zn sprayed on the plant shoots and Zn in soil + shoots) were in the split plots. Plant growth (stem lengths and numbers, shoot dry matter and tuber numbers) was characterized at 20 and 45 days after plant emergence. Following natural senescence, tubers were harvested, graded and weighted. At both sampling dates, plant growth was not affected by the treatments. Commercial tuber yield (44.2 t/ha) was higher in the plots receiving fungicides containing Zn and it was not affected by zinc fertilizer application methods. The treatments did not affect the P, Ca, Mg, Cu and Fe contents in the tubers but Mn and Zn contents were higher when plants were sprayed with Zn fungicides

Emerging contaminants have been considered one of the main concerns for ensuring the quality of water around the world. This work presents the results of 10 years of analyses carried out in the state of São Paulo (Brazil) that has the high population density and intense agricultural and industrial activities. In this work 58 compounds (9 hormones, 14 pharmaceuticals and personal care products, 8 industrial compounds, 17 pesticides and 10 illicit drugs) were determined from 2006 to 2015 in 708 samples including raw and treated sewage, surface and ground and drinking waters. A preliminary risk assessment for aquatic life protection identified potential risks for caffeine, paracetamol, diclofenac, 17α-ethynylestradiol, 17β-estradiol, estriol, estrone, testosterone, triclosan, 4-n-nonylphenol, bisphenol A, atrazine, azoxystrobin, carbendazim, fipronil, imidacloprid, malathion and tebuconazole. Drinking water criteria were available only for 22 compounds and for them no adverse effects were expected at the concentrations found, except for 17β-estradiol

Measurements of CFTR-Mediated Cl- Secretion in Human Rectal Biopsies Constitute a Robust Biomarker for Cystic Fibrosis Diagnosis and Prognosis

BACKGROUND: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is caused by ∼1,900 mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene encoding for a cAMP-regulated chloride (Cl(-)) channel expressed in several epithelia. Clinical features are dominated by respiratory symptoms, but there is variable organ involvement thus causing diagnostic dilemmas, especially for non-classic cases. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To further establish measurement of CFTR function as a sensitive and robust biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of CF, we herein assessed cholinergic and cAMP-CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion in 524 freshly excised rectal biopsies from 118 individuals, including patients with confirmed CF clinical diagnosis (n=51), individuals with clinical CF suspicion (n=49) and age-matched non-CF controls (n=18). Conclusive measurements were obtained for 96% of cases. Patients with "Classic CF", presenting earlier onset of symptoms, pancreatic insufficiency, severe lung disease and low Shwachman-Kulczycki scores were found to lack CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion (<5%). Individuals with milder CF disease presented residual CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion (10-57%) and non-CF controls show CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion ≥ 30-35% and data evidenced good correlations with various clinical parameters. Finally, comparison of these values with those in "CF suspicion" individuals allowed to confirm CF in 16/49 individuals (33%) and exclude it in 28/49 (57%). Statistical discriminant analyses showed that colonic measurements of CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion are the best discriminator among Classic/Non-Classic CF and non-CF groups. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Determination of CFTR-mediated Cl(-) secretion in rectal biopsies is demonstrated here to be a sensitive, reproducible and robust predictive biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of CF. The method also has very high potential for (pre-)clinical trials of CFTR-modulator therapies. This work was supported by grants TargetScreen2 (EU/FP6/LSH/2005/037365), PIC/IC/83103/2007; PTDC/MAT/118335/2010; PEstOE/BIA/UI4046/2011 (to BioFIG) and PEstOE/MAT/UI0006/2011 (to CEAUL) from FCT (Portugal); and FAPESP (SPRF, Brazil), CNPq (40.8924/2006/3, Brazil) and Mukoviszidose e.V. We report on the growth of bulk samples (composite fibers) of the nominal composition La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCMO) manganites (with Curie temperature TC,max = 300 K) by using the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) technique. Samples composition was verified through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The magnetic behavior of the fibers was probed by magnetization measurements. In addition to a weak ferromagnetic transition at TC0 = 45 K (due to MnO2 impurities), two more transitions with TC1 = 126 K and TC2 = 180 K were identified and linked to regions with cerium concentration of x = 0.063 and 0.13, respectively.FAPESPCAPESCNP
