Nexus between environmental, social and economic development in South Asia: evidence from econometric models

    Get PDF
This study investigates the impact of various economic, social and environmental indicators on economic growth in South Asian countries. Using the data throughout 1990–2017, a panel data estimation method is adopted with sophisticated econometric approaches. The obtained results indicate a long-term positive effect of biological capacity, financial development, human development index, income inequality on economic growth while the effect of energy use is the opposite. The findings of the study suggest that governments and associated bodies must promote financial development, human development, and biocapacity to not only attain economic growth in the long-run and but dissuade ecological footprint, and income inequality at the same time while matching the energy consumption with the bio-capacity of each economy

Mortality Among Adults With Cancer Undergoing Chemotherapy or Immunotherapy and Infected With COVID-19

Importance: Large cohorts of patients with active cancers and COVID-19 infection are needed to provide evidence of the association of recent cancer treatment and cancer type with COVID-19 mortality. // Objective: To evaluate whether systemic anticancer treatments (SACTs), tumor subtypes, patient demographic characteristics (age and sex), and comorbidities are associated with COVID-19 mortality. // Design, Setting, and Participants: The UK Coronavirus Cancer Monitoring Project (UKCCMP) is a prospective cohort study conducted at 69 UK cancer hospitals among adult patients (≥18 years) with an active cancer and a clinical diagnosis of COVID-19. Patients registered from March 18 to August 1, 2020, were included in this analysis. // Exposures: SACT, tumor subtype, patient demographic characteristics (eg, age, sex, body mass index, race and ethnicity, smoking history), and comorbidities were investigated. // Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was all-cause mortality within the primary hospitalization. // Results: Overall, 2515 of 2786 patients registered during the study period were included; 1464 (58%) were men; and the median (IQR) age was 72 (62-80) years. The mortality rate was 38% (966 patients). The data suggest an association between higher mortality in patients with hematological malignant neoplasms irrespective of recent SACT, particularly in those with acute leukemias or myelodysplastic syndrome (OR, 2.16; 95% CI, 1.30-3.60) and myeloma or plasmacytoma (OR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.04-2.26). Lung cancer was also significantly associated with higher COVID-19–related mortality (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.11-2.25). No association between higher mortality and receiving chemotherapy in the 4 weeks before COVID-19 diagnosis was observed after correcting for the crucial confounders of age, sex, and comorbidities. An association between lower mortality and receiving immunotherapy in the 4 weeks before COVID-19 diagnosis was observed (immunotherapy vs no cancer therapy: OR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.31-0.86). // Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this study of patients with active cancer suggest that recent SACT is not associated with inferior outcomes from COVID-19 infection. This has relevance for the care of patients with cancer requiring treatment, particularly in countries experiencing an increase in COVID-19 case numbers. Important differences in outcomes among patients with hematological and lung cancers were observed

Improving Oral Health Through Mobile Dentistry

Oral health diseases are one of the major challenges faced by the general population.  Dental caries and periodontal diseases have higher prevalence in the people living in rural areas. To address such population and to overcome the conventional oral health care strategies MDV was introduced . They are utilized in school-based programs, delivering oral health care to homeless , migrants, specially abled, old and poor individuals. Screening, treatment, health education and motivation all are carried out in the event

ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MDR BACTERIA FROM IN VITRO CULTURE OF BACOPA MONNIERA AND SUPPLEMENTATION OF NATURAL EXTRACTS TO CONTROL BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to isolate and characterize bacterial contamination from in vitro culture of Bacopa monniera callus culture. Methods: The two selected isolates (1 and 2) were identified by morphological, biochemical and molecular (16S rRNA gene sequencing) methods. Beside this antibiotic resistance was also determined. Results: The isolates were identified as closely related to Enterobacter cloacae (KU350623) (Isolate 1) and Myroides odoratimimus (KU382740) (Isolate 2). The isolate 1 and 2 were found to be resistant to streptomycin (25 mcg), dapsone (10 mcg), erythromycin (15 mcg), chloroamphenicol (25 mcg) and ampicillin (10 mcg). Supplementation of the natural extract was tested to control the contamination due to these multi drug resistant bacteria. Aqueous and alcoholic leaf extracts of Azadirachta indica was added to plant tissue culture media i.e. MS media in order to control contamination. Conclusion: The present studies suggest using natural extracts supplementation as a promising strategy to control the in vitro bacterial contamination in plant tissue culture

75 Years of Vaccination in India and Way Ahead

Prevention of diseases through vaccination has been a key component of Preventive Medicine. The history of vaccination in India begins from pre-Independence where Small pox vaccine was introduced for the first time and administered through tikadars(vaccinators) till post-Independence where the political will and the medical experts helped us eliminate Poliomyelitis- a dreaded disease. Post-Independence, India has come a long way from starting the manufacturing of vaccines, introducing Expanded Polio Immunization (1978) and Universal Immunization Programme (1985) to a path breaking performance in Covid-19 vaccination. The Covid-19 vaccination has brought India under the limelight globally and are ready to take up further challenges. The Covid-19 vaccination is a model in itself for the world and has been analysed in detail from planning to its execution. This paper attempts to review the history of vaccination from pre-Independence era in brief to a greater focus on how it paved a way for further developments in the domain of Vaccination post-Independence in the country

Advancements in Microemulsion Based Drug Delivery Systems for Better Therapeutic Effects

    No full text
Recent progress in combinatorial drug has led to the generation of a large number of new compounds. microemulsions are versatile systems of great technological and scientific interest to the researchers because of their potential to incorporate a wide range of drug molecules (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) due to the presence of both lipophilic and hydrophilic domains. A micro emulsion is a transparent, thermodynamically stable mixture of two immiscible liquid stabilized by surfactant (or mixture of surfactant). Microemulsions have many advantages for instance, more drug solubility, thermodynamic stability, manufacturing and permeation is easy over conventional formulations that convert them to important drug delivery systems. The design and development of microemulsions aimed at controlling or improving required bioavailability levels of therapeutic agents. Through this review an attempt has been made to focus on several recent developments occurred in the field of microemulsions based applications and which confirms its role as a suitable cargoes for delivery of drugs. In that note, the relevance of this paper and the truncated basic aspects and application on microemulsions are discussed.</p

Neuroentrepreneurship: an integrative review and research agenda

There is emergent literature that converges from neuroscience and entrepreneurship research, but the definitions and interlinkages are still inconsistent. We conduct a systematic literature review of 167 papers on the interface between neuroscience and entrepreneurship to address this. We observe the literature trends examining the interlinkages between neuroscience and entrepreneurial intention through six antecedents, namely - molecular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, behavioral neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, social neuroscience, and computational neuroscience. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurial intention impacts entrepreneurial activity through five factors, including (1) opportunity recognition, (2) evaluation and risk-taking, (3) entrepreneurial cognition, (4) entrepreneurial behavior, and (5) entrepreneurial decision-making. From our discussions, the links among the neural factors affecting entrepreneurship are identified, and a research agenda highlighting a pathway for future studies is proposed
