    A controlled rate freeze/thaw system for cryopreservation of biological materials

    A system which allows programmable temperature-time control for a 5 cc sample volume of an arbitrary biological material was constructed. Steady state and dynamic temperature control was obtained by supplying heat to the sample volume through resistive elements constructed as an integral part of the sample container. For cooling purposes, this container was totally immersed into a cold heat sink. Sample volume thermodynamic property data were obtained by measurements of heater power and heat flux through the container walls. Using a mixture of dry ice and alcohol at -79 C, sample volume was controlled from +40 C to -60 C at rates from steady state to + or - 65 C/min. Steady state temperature precision was better than 0.2 C while the dynamic capability depends on the temperature rate of change as well as the thermal mass of the sample and the container

    Hunting for the New Symmetries in Calabi-Yau Jungles

    It was proposed that the Calabi-Yau geometry can be intrinsically connected with some new symmetries, some new algebras. In order to do this it has been analyzed the graphs constructed from K3-fibre CY_d (d \geq 3) reflexive polyhedra. The graphs can be naturally get in the frames of Universal Calabi-Yau algebra (UCYA) and may be decode by universal way with changing of some restrictions on the generalized Cartan matrices associated with the Dynkin diagrams that characterize affine Kac-Moody algebras. We propose that these new Berger graphs can be directly connected with the generalizations of Lie and Kac-Moody algebras.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figure

    Towards an Algebraic Classification of Calabi-Yau Manifolds; 1, Study of K3 Spaces

    We present an inductive algebraic approach to the systematic construction andclassification of generalized Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds in different numbers ofcomplex dimensions, based on Batyrev's formulation of CY manifolds as toricvarieties in weighted complex projective spaces associated with reflexivepolyhedra. We show how the allowed weight vectors in lower dimensions may beextended to higher dimensions, emphasizing the roles of projection andintersection in their dual description, and the natural appearance ofCartan-Lie algebra structures. The 50 allowed extended four-dimensional vectorsmay be combined in pairs (triples) to form 22 (4) chains containing 90 (91) K3spaces, of which 94 are distinct, and one further K3 space is found usingduality. In the case of CY_3 spaces, pairs (triples) of the 10~270 allowedextended vectors yield 4242 (259) chains with K3 (elliptic) fibers containing730 additional K3 polyhedra.     Universal Calabi-Yau Algebra: Classification and Enumeration of Fibrations

    We apply a universal normal Calabi-Yau algebra to the construction and classification of compact complex nn-dimensional spaces with SU(n) holonomy and their fibrations. This algebraic approach includes natural extensions of reflexive weight vectors to higher dimensions and a `dual' construction based on the Diophantine decomposition of invariant monomials. The latter provides recurrence formulae for the numbers of fibrations of Calabi-Yau spaces in arbitrary dimensions, which we exhibit explicitly for some Weierstrass and K3 examples

    Probes of Lorentz Violation in Neutrino Propagation

    It has been suggested that the interactions of energetic particles with the foamy structure of space-time thought to be generated by quantum-gravitational (QG) effects might violate Lorentz invariance, so that they do not propagate at a universal speed of light. We consider the limits that may be set on a linear or quadratic violation of Lorentz invariance in the propagation of energetic neutrinos, v/c=[1 +- (E/M_\nuQG1)] or [1 +- (E/M_\nu QG2}^2], using data from supernova explosions and the OPERA long-baseline neutrino experiment. Using the SN1987a neutrino data from the Kamioka II, IMB and Baksan experiments, we set the limits M_\nuQG1 > 2.7(2.5)x10^10 GeV for subluminal (superluminal) propagation, respectively, and M_\nuQG2 >4.6(4.1)x10^4 GeV at the 95% confidence level. A future galactic supernova at a distance of 10 kpc would have sensitivity to M_\nuQG1 > 2(4)x10^11 GeV for subluminal (superluminal) propagation, respectively, and M_\nuQG2 > 2(4)x10^5 GeV. With the current CNGS extraction spill length of 10.5 micro seconds and with standard clock synchronization techniques, the sensitivity of the OPERA experiment would reach M_\nuQG1 ~ 7x10^5 GeV (M_\nuQG2 ~ 8x10^3 GeV) after 5 years of nominal running. If the time structure of the SPS RF bunches within the extracted CNGS spills could be exploited, these figures would be significantly improved to M_\nuQG1 ~ 5x10^7 GeV (M_\nuQG2 ~ 4x10^4 GeV). These results can be improved further if similar time resolution can be achieved with neutrino events occurring in the rock upstream of the OPERA detector: we find potential sensitivities to M_\nuQG1 ~ 4x10^8 GeV and M_\nuQG2 ~ 7x10^5 GeV.Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, version accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Top Quark Spin Polarization in ep Collision

    We discuss the degree of spin polarization of single top quarks produced via WgWg fusion process in epep collision at TESLA+HERAp and CLIC+LHC energies s=1.6\sqrt{s}=1.6 and 5.3 TeV. For ebtνˉeb \to t \bar{\nu} subprocess we show that the top quark spin is completely polarized when the spin basis is chosen in the direction of the incoming positron beam in the rest frame of top quark. A description on how to combine the cross sections of e+btνˉe^{+}b\to t\bar{\nu} and e+gtbˉνˉe^{+}g\to t\bar{b}\bar{\nu} processes is given. e+e^{+}-beam direction is taken to be the favorite top quark spin decomposition axis in its rest frame and it is found to be comparable with the ones in pppp collision. It is argued that theoretical simplicity and experimental clearness are the advantage of epep collision.Comment: Revised version of Phys. Rev. D69 (2004)03401

    We study the possibility to employ neural networks to simulate jet clustering procedures in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. We concentrate our analysis on the Fermilab Tevatron energy and on the kk_\bot algorithm. We consider both supervised multilayer feed-forward network trained by the backpropagation algorithm and unsupervised learning, where the neural network autonomously organizes the events in clusters.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 2 figures not included

    Results from an Algebraic Classification of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

    We present results from an inductive algebraic approach to the systematic construction and classification of the `lowest-level' CY3 spaces defined as zeroes of polynomial loci associated with reflexive polyhedra, derived from suitable vectors in complex projective spaces. These CY3 spaces may be sorted into `chains' obtained by combining lower-dimensional projective vectors classified previously. We analyze all the 4242 (259, 6, 1) two- (three-, four-, five-) vector chains, which have, respectively, K3 (elliptic, line-segment, trivial) fibres, yielding 174767 (an additional 6189, 1582, 199) distinct projective vectors that define reflexive polyhedra and thereby CY3 spaces, for a total of 182737. These CY3 spaces span 10827 (a total of 10882) distinct pairs of Hodge numbers h_11, h_12. Among these, we list explicitly a total of 212 projective vectors defining three-generation CY3 spaces with K3 fibrations, whose characteristics we provide

    Phylogenetic analyses of typical bovine rotavirus genotypes G6, G10, P[5] and P[11] circulating in Argentinean beef and dairy herds

    Group A rotavirus (RVA) is one of the main causes of neonatal calf diarrhea worldwide. RVA strains affecting Argentinean cattle mainly possess combinations of the G6, G10, P[5] and P[11] genotypes. To determine RVA diversity among Argentinean cattle, representative bovine RVA strains detected in diarrheic calves were selected from a survey conducted during 1997–2009. The survey covered the main livestock regions of the country from dairy and beef herds. Different phylogenetic approaches were used to investigate the genetic evolution of RVA strains belonging to the prevalent genotypes. The nucleotide phylogenetic tree showed that all genotypes studied could be divided into several lineages. Argentinean bovine RVA strains were distributed across multiple lineages and most of them were distinct from the lineage containing the vaccine strains. Only the aminoacid phylogenetic tree of G6 RVA strains maintained the same lineages as observed at the nucleotide level, whereas a different clustering pattern was observed for the aminoacid phylogenetic trees of G10, P[5] and P[11] suggesting that the strains are more closely related at the aminoacid level than G6 strains. Association between P[5] and G6(IV), prevalent in beef herd, and between P[11] and G6(III) or G10 (VI and V), prevalent in dairy herds, were found. In addition, Argentinean G6(III), G10, P[5] and P[11] bovine RVA strains grouped together with human strains, highlighting their potential for zoonotic transmission. Phylogenetic studies of RVA circulating in animals raised for consumption and in close contact with humans, such as cattle, contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of the RVA infection and evolution.Fil: Badaracco, Alejandra.
